Our next stop was Manos de la Comunidad, a local arts and crafts shop, gallery, and cultural stop. It focuses on authentic Peruvian handicrafts, especially traditional Andean textiles and fiber work.
Kolejnym przystankiem było Manos de la Comunidad, lokalne miejsce związane z rękodziełem i sztuką ludową. Można tu zobaczyć i kupić autentyczne peruwiańskie wyroby, szczególnie tradycyjne andyjskie tekstylia i produkty z naturalnych włókien.
The visit started with meeting Andean camelids. We were allowed to feed alpacas, llamas, and vicuñas. Fresh, long green grass was provided, and interacting with them was a lot of fun. They were mostly very friendly, although one rather temperamental lady spat on me when she did not receive her grass quickly enough. There were llamas and alpacas in all possible colours, all of them beautiful. The vicuñas were kept separately. They were shyer and calmer, but still seemed to enjoy the snack.
Zwiedzanie zaczęliśmy od spotkania z andyjskimi wielbłądowatymi. Mogliśmy karmić alpaki, lamy i wikunie. Organizatorzy rozdali świeżą, długą, zieloną trawę, a kontakt ze zwierzętami był naprawdę przyjemny. Większość była bardzo przyjazna, choć jedna dość temperamentna dama opluła mnie, gdy nie dostała trawy wystarczająco szybko. Były tam lamy i alpaki w najróżniejszych kolorach, wszystkie piękne. Wikunie trzymano osobno. Były bardziej nieśmiałe i spokojniejsze, ale również chętnie sięgały po przekąskę.
After that, we went to observe the condors. The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a near-threatened species in Peru and is culturally and ecologically important. At first, I wondered whether keeping these birds there was more about tourist entertainment, but I felt much more at ease once I had time to observe the situation. The condors were kept in a huge aviary that did not seem designed with visitors as the main priority. We could approach the fence, but there were bushes in the way and a good distance between us and the birds. They were clearly not used as photo props.
Two of the condors were showing clear courtship behaviour. Condors only bond and reproduce when they feel safe, unstressed, and stable, so seeing this helped my initial doubts fade. I could then simply stand and watch these impressive birds in peace.
Później przeszliśmy do obserwacji kondorów. Kondor andyjski (Vultur gryphus) to w Peru gatunek bliski zagrożenia i ptak o ogromnym znaczeniu kulturowym i przyrodniczym. Początkowo zastanawiałam się, czy trzymanie ich w tym miejscu nie jest po prostu atrakcją dla turystów, ale po chwili obserwacji poczułam się dużo spokojniej. Ptaki przebywały w bardzo dużej wolierze, która wyraźnie nie była zaprojektowana pod wygodę zwiedzających. Można było podejść do ogrodzenia, ale między nami a kondorami były różne krzaczory i całkiem spory dystans (nasz zdjęcia są z zooma). Nie było mowy o wykorzystywaniu ptaków jako rekwizytów.
Dwa kondory wyraźnie też okazywały zachowania godowe. Kondory łączą się w pary i rozmnażają tylko wtedy, gdy czują się bezpiecznie, spokojnie i stabilnie, więc ten widok rozwiał moje początkowe wątpliwości. Mogłam wreszcie po prostu stać i obserwować te imponujące ptaki.
