Second breakfast at Alma

Today we came down for breakfast rather early, which meant I managed to take quite a few pictures for the blog before the restaurant got busy.

Breakfast at Alma is quite decent, with a good selection of breads, meats and cheeses, eggs, fruit, vegetables, cereals, juices and desserts. Everything is fresh and tasty, and it takes a bit of self- control not to overeat.

Dziś zeszliśmy na śniadanie dość wcześnie, dzięki czemu udało mi się zrobić sporo zdjęć do bloga, zanim restauracja zapełniła się gośćmi.

Śniadania w Alma są całkiem przyzwoite. Wybór pieczywa, wędlin i serów jest duży, do tego jajka, owoce, warzywa, płatki, soki i desery. Wszystko świeże i smaczne, a największym wyzwaniem jest nie nałożyć sobie za dużo.

After filling our savoury plates, we followed them up with some tasty pancakes and plenty of fruit. We are now ready for a new adventure.

Before that, though, let me talk a little more about Casa Andina in my next entry.

Po solidnej porcji wytrawnych rzeczy skusiliśmy się jeszcze na smaczne naleśniki i sporą porcję owoców. Teraz jesteśmy już gotowi na kolejną przygodę.

Kinky Boots

We bought the tickets for Kinky Boots many months ago, but then my work trip to China was scheduled for dates that included the performance. Fortunately, we managed to exchange our tickets for an earlier performance. We only had to pay the difference in price for better seats. Well, no regrets!

There are musicals that entertain you for a couple of hours, and there are musicals that stay with you long after the curtain falls. Kinky Boots manages to do both.

Bilety na Kinky Boots kupiliśmy z kilkumiesięcznym wyprzedzeniem. Później okazało się, że mój wyjazd służbowy do Chin wypada dokładnie w terminie spektaklu. Na szczęście udało nam się zamienić bilety na wcześniejszy termin – musieliśmy jedynie dopłacić różnicę za lepsze miejsca. I powiem tylko, że było warto.

Są musicale, które po prostu dostarczają rozrywki na dwa czy trzy godziny. Są też takie, o których myśli się jeszcze długo po wyjściu z teatru. Kinky Boots zdecydowanie należy do tej drugiej kategorii.

What many people don't realise is that the story is rooted in real life. It was inspired by Steve Pateman, a Northamptonshire businessman who discovered an unusual niche – making women's boots in men's sizes for drag artists. His story became the 2005 British film, which was later transformed into the award-winning musical featuring music and lyrics by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

Set in the traditional Price & Son shoe factory in Northampton, the story follows Charlie Price, who unexpectedly inherits the struggling family business after his father's death. The factory is facing closure, and with it the livelihoods of the people Charlie has known since childhood is threatened. Everything changes when he meets Lola, a charismatic drag queen whose confidence, humour and honesty inspire Charlie to look at the business from a completely different perspective. Together they discover an untapped market and begin creating the famous "kinky boots"

On the surface, it is a story about saving a shoe factory. Underneath, it is about acceptance, identity and finding the courage to be yourself. Charlie's factory workers have never met anyone quite like Lola before, and their first reactions are not always welcoming. Watching those barriers slowly disappear is one of the most satisfying parts of the show. Despite tackling prejudice and difficult subjects, the musical never feels heavy. Instead, it delivers its message with warmth, humour and an incredible amount of sparkle.

Niewiele osób wie, że historia oparta jest na prawdziwych wydarzeniach. Inspiracją był Steve Pateman, przedsiębiorca z Northamptonshire, który uratował swoją fabrykę obuwia, znajdując bardzo nietypową niszę – produkcję damskich butów w męskich rozmiarach dla artystów drag. Na podstawie tej historii powstał najpierw brytyjski film z 2005 roku, a później nagradzany musical z muzyką i tekstami piosenek autorstwa legendarnej Cyndi Lauper.

Akcja rozgrywa się w tradycyjnej fabryce obuwia Price & Son w Northampton. Charlie Price niespodziewanie dziedziczy rodzinny biznes, który od dłuższego czasu zmaga się z problemami finansowymi. Zamknięcie fabryki oznaczałoby utratę pracy dla ludzi, których zna on od dziecka. Wszystko zmienia się, gdy na jego drodze pojawia się Lola – charyzmatyczna drag queen, która pokazuje mu zupełnie inne spojrzenie na świat i pomaga odkryć nowy kierunek rozwoju firmy. Tak rodzi się pomysł na słynne "kinky boots".

Choć na pierwszy rzut oka jest to historia o ratowaniu fabryki, tak naprawdę opowiada o akceptacji, przełamywaniu uprzedzeń i odwadze, by być sobą. Pracownicy fabryki początkowo nie wiedzą, co myśleć o Loli, ale z czasem uczą się patrzeć na nią bez stereotypów. To właśnie ta przemiana sprawia, że musical ma w sobie znacznie więcej głębi, niż można by się spodziewać.

The current production, directed by Nikolai Foster, is visually spectacular. As the curtain rises, the enormous stage of the London Coliseum reveals an impressively realistic factory floor, complete with workstations, industrial machinery and a towering iron staircase leading to the office overlooking the workers below. The contrast between this gritty industrial setting and the colourful world of drag works brilliantly throughout the performance.

The costumes deserve a standing ovation of their own. They are dazzling, extravagant and wonderfully over the top - exactly what you would hope for from a musical with "Kinky" in its title. Sequins, feathers, towering red boots and endless costume changes fill the stage with colour, while the vibrant lighting design makes every scene burst with energy.

The music is another highlight. Cyndi Lauper's score is packed with memorable songs, including The Land of Lola, Sex Is in the Heel and The Most Beautiful Thing, each perfectly capturing the emotion and excitement of the story.

Obecna inscenizacja w reżyserii Nikolaia Fostera robi ogromne wrażenie. Już po podniesieniu kurtyny oczom widzów ukazuje się realistycznie odtworzona hala produkcyjna z maszynami, stanowiskami pracy i charakterystycznymi metalowymi schodami prowadzącymi do biura. Surowe wnętrze fabryki świetnie kontrastuje z pełnym kolorów i blasku światem drag.

Na osobne brawa zasługują kostiumy. Jest brokat, cekiny, pióra, spektakularne czerwone kozaki i mnóstwo pięknych kreacji – dokładnie to, czego można oczekiwać po musicalu ze słowem „kinky” w tytule. Całość dopełnia dynamiczne oświetlenie, które sprawia, że scena często dosłownie mieni się kolorami.

Muzyka Cyndi Lauper także wpada w ucho od pierwszych minut. Piosenki takie jak The Land of Lola, Sex Is in the Heel czy The Most Beautiful Thing doskonale oddają klimat spektaklu, a świetna choreografia i energia całego zespołu sprawiają, że trudno usiedzieć spokojnie w fotelu.

This production also features two familiar faces for British audiences. Johannes Radebe, best known from Strictly Come Dancing, makes an unforgettable West End debut as Lola, bringing incredible charisma, elegance and warmth to the role. Alongside him, former X Factor winner Matt Cardle takes on the role of Charlie Price.

Perhaps what makes Kinky Boots feel even more relevant today is its message. At a time when many members of the LGBTQ+ community still face prejudice and discrimination, this joyful celebration of inclusivity feels as important as ever. It reminds us that understanding often begins simply by listening to one another, and that our differences can become our greatest strengths.

Filled with fantastic music, stunning costumes, fierce choreography, killer heels and plenty of laughter, Kinky Boots is much more than a feel-good musical. It is an uplifting reminder that everyone deserves the chance to stand proud, be accepted and walk confidently in their own shoes.

Chociaż Kinky Boots powstał już kilka lat temu, jego przesłanie pozostaje bardzo aktualne. To opowieść o tolerancji, wzajemnym szacunku i akceptowaniu ludzi takimi, jakimi są. Wszystko to podane z dużą dawką humoru, świetnej muzyki i widowiskowej oprawy.

To musical, który nie tylko bawi, ale też zostawia po sobie coś więcej niż kilka wpadających w ucho melodii…

Rucula

After enjoying both Yaku and Organika, it seems only natural that we end up at Rucula as well. It is another restaurant from the same family, sharing the same philosophy of fresh local ingredients and a relaxed atmosphere. The menu combines Peruvian flavours with international influences, and many of the vegetables come straight from the restaurant's own garden.

Po wizytach w Yaku i Organice kolejnym oczywistym przystankiem była dla nas Rucula. To kolejna restauracja należąca do tej samej rodziny, oparta na podobnej filozofii świeżych, lokalnych składników i swobodnej atmosfery. W menu peruwiańskie smaki spotykają się z inspiracjami z różnych stron świata, a część warzyw pochodzi prosto z ich własnego ogrodu.

We begin with soups. The pumpkin cream is smooth, warming and exactly what we need after a long day. The chicken noodle soup is equally comforting.

Na początek zamawiamy zupy. Aksamitny, rozgrzewający Kkrem z dyni jest dokładnie tym, czego potrzebujemy po długim dniu zwiedzania. Równie dobrze smakuje nam peruwiański  rosół z makaronem.

For our mains, I order wok stir-fry quinoa with mushrooms, vegetables and tamarind sauce. The quinoa works surprisingly well in this Asian-inspired dish, and the tamarind gives it a pleasant sweet-and-sour kick. Marcin tries the lomo saltado, one of Peru's best-known dishes. Tender beef is stir-fried with onions and tomatoes and served with French fries and rice.

Na danie główne ja wybieram komosę ryżową smażoną w woku z grzybami, warzywami i sosem tamaryndowym. Quinoa świetnie odnajduje się w tym inspirowanym kuchnią azjatycką daniu, a tamaryndowiec dodaje mu przyjemnej słodko-kwaśnej nuty. Marcin zamawia lomo saltado, jedno z najbardziej znanych dań Peru. Delikatna wołowina smażona jest z cebulą i pomidorami, a całość podawana z frytkami i ryżem.

For drinks, we share a teapot of Organica, their famous fresh herb tea, and a pisco sour. The tea is fragrant and refreshing, while the pisco sour reminds us that we are still very much in Peru.

Dessert is ponderación, a crispy cookie spiral served with yolk cream and vanilla ice cream. We are instructed to crush the cookie and soak it in the cream before eating. We follow the instructions diligently and are rewarded with a delicious mess of crunchy biscuit, silky cream and melting ice cream.

By now, it is clear that Yaku, Organika and Rucula all share the same strengths: fresh ingredients, creative cooking and a genuine focus on local produce. After three visits, we can safely say that this restaurant family has become one of our favourite discoveries in Cusco.

Do picia dzielimy się dzbankiem Organica - ich słynnej herbaty ze świeżych ziół - oraz pisco sour. Herbata jest aromatyczna i odświeżająca, natomiast pisco sour przypomina nam, że wciąż jesteśmy w Peru.

Na deser wybieramy ponderación - chrupiący spiralny herbatnik podawany z kremem jajecznym i lodami waniliowymi. Obsługa instruuje nas, by pokruszyć ciastko i namoczyć je w kremie przed jedzeniem. Sumiennie stosujemy się do wskazówek i w nagrodę dostajemy pyszne połączenie chrupkości, aksamitnego kremu i rozpływających się lodów.

Po trzech wizytach nie mamy już wątpliwości, że Yaku, Organica i Rucula mają ze sobą wiele wspólnego: świeże składniki, kreatywne podejście do gotowania i autentyczne przywiązanie do lokalnych produktów. Ta restauracyjna rodzina bez wątpienia należy do naszych ulubionych odkryć kulinarnych w Cusco.

Belgravia in Bloom 2026

Our favourite London festival is back and, naturally, we are not going to miss it. This year's Belgravia in Bloom theme is Fairy Tales in Belgravia, inviting visitors into a world of enchanted forests, magical creatures and storybook adventures.

As always, our walk begins at Chestnut Bakery, which this year is serving strong Alice in Wonderland vibes. Unlike last year, when we had breakfast here, we decide to switch things up and head a little further along the route. We pass the beautifully decorated Koub and Bayley Sage and soon find ourselves in front of Peggy Porschen. Their display draws inspiration from La Dolce Vita, combining vibrant flowers with lemons, peaches and a distinctly Amalfi Coast atmosphere. It feels less like a traditional fairy tale and more like stepping into a glamorous Mediterranean fantasy.

Nasza ulubiony londyński festiwal powraca i, oczywiście, nie mogło nas tam zabraknąć. Tegoroczna edycja Belgravia in Bloom odbywa się pod hasłem Fairy Tales in Belgravia.

Jak zawsze nasz spacer zaczynamy przy Chestnut Bakery, które w tym roku serwuje klimaty z Alicji w Krainie Czarów. W przeciwieństwie do zeszłego roku, kiedy jedliśmy tu śniadanie, tym razem postanawiamy zmienić harmonogram i zjeść nieco dalej. Mijamy więc pięknie udekorowane Koub i Bayley Sage i stajemy przed Peggy Porschen. Ich instalacja inspirowana jest La Dolce Vita - pełna kolorowych kwiatów, cytrusowych akcentów i wyraźnego klimatu włoskiego wybrzeża Amalfi. Całość bardziej przypomina luksusową, śródziemnomorską fantazję niż klasyczną bajkę.

The doorway of the opposite TomTom café is framed with beautiful, colourful florals and greenery, and we will be back here for our Belgravia brunch, but not just yet. We pass the Lime Tree Hotel adorned with oversized flowers and head towards Eccleston Yards. They embraced the theme with a Peter Rabbit-inspired garden and a pumpkin-coloured flower carriage. Then we are back on Elizabeth Street, where several shopfronts have transformed themselves with arches, garlands and cascades of flowers.

Wejście do naprzeciwległego TomTom Café otoczone jest bujnymi, kolorowymi kompozycjami kwiatów i zieleni – wrócimy tu na brunch, ale jeszcze nie teraz. Mijamy hotel Lime Tree ozdobiony wielkimi kwiatami i kierujemy się w stronę Eccleston Yards, gdzie znajdujemy ogród inspirowany „Królikiem Piotrusiem” oraz dyniową, kwiatową karocę. Następnie wracamy na Elizabeth Street, gdzie liczne witryny sklepów zamieniły się w łuki, girlandy i kaskady kwiatów.

Further down the street, Les Senteurs has taken inspiration from Snow White. Surrounded by vibrant flowers, a decorative mirror stands beside baskets overflowing with glossy red apples. The reference is instantly recognisable and wonderfully simple.

Motywem przewodnim instalacji Les Senteurs stała się „Królewna Śnieżka”. Wśród pięknych kompozycji kwiatowych znajdujemy tu dekoracyjne lustro, a obok niego kosze wypełnione lśniącymi czerwonymi jabłkami. Nawiązanie do bajki jest natychmiast rozpoznawalne i bardzo proste w formie.

Outside Summerill & Bishop, Moyses Stevens has created a fragment of a fairy garden on an oversized scale. A fairy silhouette rises above giant red mushrooms, making passers-by feel as though they have been shrunk to the size of Tinker Bell. While the fairy herself is relatively simple, the surrounding display is gloriously abundant, packed with deep reds, vibrant greens, and oversized plants.

Przed Summerill & Bishop Moyses Stevens stworzył fragment bajkowego ogrodu w powiększonej formie. Sylwetka wróżki mniej więcej naszego rozmiaru wynurza się znad ogromnych muchomorów, sprawiając, że przechodnie czują się jakby zmniejszeni do rozmiaru Dzwoneczka. Sama wróżka jest dość minimalistyczna, ale otaczająca ją scenografia jest bardzo bogata z dominującą paletą głębokiej czerwieni i intensywnej zieleni.

From there we make our way towards Halkin Street, where Neill Strain Floral Couture has created a striking installation. A complete bluebell extravaganza takes over the space, with enormous blooms rising far above head height. Rich, saturated greens, blues and purples dominate the installation, and it is easily my favourite of the entire Belgravia trail this year.

Dalej kierujemy się w stronę Halkin Street, gdzie Neill Strain Floral Couture przygotowało jedną z najbardziej efektownych instalacji. Całą przestrzeń wypełniają spektakularne dzwonki, wyrastające wysoko ponad poziom ulicy. Soczyste zielenie i fiolety dominują w tej kompozycji, która jest moją ulubioną instalacją całej tegorocznej trasy w Belgravii.

 Just a short walk away, at the corner of Motcomb Street and Kinnerton Street, Neill Strain has also created a different kind of installation. An arched passageway is wrapped in cascading wisteria, which spills down in soft waves of colour.

Kilka kroków dalej, na rogu Motcomb Street i Kinnerton Street, Neill Strain stworzył zupełnie inną instalację  - znajdujące się tutaj arkadowe przejście zostało ozdobione kaskadami barwnych wisterii.

One of the joys of Belgravia in Bloom is that the headline installations are only part of the experience. Some of our favourite moments come from discovering beautifully decorated shopfronts tucked between the larger displays. Every boutique, florist and café seems eager to add its own interpretation of the theme, creating a trail full of unexpected details and surprises.

Jedną z największych przyjemności Belgravia in Bloom jest to, że główne instalacje to tylko część całego festiwalu. Najciekawsze momenty często kryją się między nimi - w pięknie udekorowanych witrynach, mniejszych kompozycjach i detalach, które pojawiają się niespodziewanie na każdym kroku, sprawiając, że cały spacer zamienia się w niekończącą się serię odkryć.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at the Riverside Studios

Here we are in the theatre again. Today it is our favourite kind of spectacle, immersion style. We are seeing The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, based on Douglas Adams’ iconic sci-fi comedy, and for the first time we find ourselves at Riverside Studios in London, Hammersmith.

I znowu jesteśmy w teatrze. Tym razem padło na nasz ulubiony rodzaj spektaklu, czyli formę immersyjną. Wybraliśmy się na The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, inspirowany kultową komedią science fiction Douglasa Adamsa, a przy okazji po raz pierwszy trafiliśmy do Riverside Studios w londyńskim Hammersmith.

The story begins in an unusual pub setting, where we settle in with a drink of our choice thanks to our VIP tickets, and before we quite realise it, the actors blend in and start chatting with the audience. From that pub scene the performance expands into a series of interconnected spaces around the venue, and we move from room to room as the story unfolds. Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and a few others narrowly escape the destruction of Earth and hitch a ride on a passing spaceship, and we follow along. Along the way we meet the depressed yet wonderfully witty robot Marvin and join the quest to understand the mystery of Life, the Universe and Everything.

Wszystko zaczyna się w dość nietypowej przestrzeni pubowej. Z drinkiem w ręku, co było miłym dodatkiem do biletów VIP, spokojnie rozglądamy się dookoła, aż w pewnym momencie orientujemy się, że aktorzy już są wśród nas i zaczynają nawiązywać rozmowy z publicznością. Stamtąd akcja stopniowo przenosi się do kolejnych pomieszczeń, a my wędrujemy po całym budynku, podążając za historią. Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox i kilku innych bohaterów w ostatniej chwili uchodzą z życiem przed zagładą Ziemi i ruszają w kosmiczną podróż, w którą zostajemy wciągnięci razem z nimi. Po drodze spotykamy Marvina, wiecznie przygnębionego, a przy tym błyskotliwego robota, i razem próbujemy zgłębić tajemnicę Życia, Wszechświata i Wszystkiego.

The performance is a blend of immersive staging, musical elements, dance and theatrical spectacle, and it lasts about ninety minutes. You do not strictly need to be deeply familiar with Douglas Adams’ books or the film adaptation to enjoy the experience, but knowing the story definitely helps you enjoy it more. As we had VIP tickets, which perhaps were not strictly necessary but we have no regrets, we also received a deck of cards printed with illustrations inspired by the book and the play. We stayed for one more soft drink afterwards, and then it was time to head off for dinner.

Całość łączy w sobie elementy teatru immersyjnego, muzyki, ruchu i wizualnego rozmachu, a spektakl trwa około półtorej godziny. Nie trzeba być zagorzałym fanem książek Adamsa ani znać filmu na pamięć, żeby dobrze się bawić, ale orientacja w tym świcie zdecydowanie dodaje przedstawieniu smaku. My skusiliśmy się na bilety VIP, co niekoniecznie dało jakieś wielkie przywileje, ale nie żebyśmy też szczególnie żałowali, zwłaszcza że dostaliśmy talię kart z ilustracjami inspirowanymi książką i spektaklem. Po przedstawieniu zostaliśmy jeszcze na jednego soft-drinka, a potem przyszedł czas ruszyć dalej, tym razem już na kolację.
