Checacupe and the Three Bridges

Today, after breakfast, we met our guide, Noe, or - as we nick-named him - Mr 40 Minutes (explanation in my next blog entries), and set off for Pallay Punchu, a less popular and more remote rainbow mountain.

Give or take two hours later, we stopped in Checacupe, a small town in the Cusco region. It was late morning, but the town square was almost completely empty. Only a few people were selling vegetables near the church, and there was very little activity around the square.

Dzisiaj, po śniadaniu, spotkaliśmy się z naszym przewodnikiem Noe, którego przechrzciliśmy na Mr 40 Minutes (wyjaśnienie w kolejnych wpisach), i ruszyliśmy w stronę Pallay Punchu - mniej popularnej i bardziej oddalonej od Cusco “tęczowej góry”.

Po mniej więcej dwóch godzinach zatrzymaliśmy się w Checacupe, niewielkim miasteczku w regionie Cusco. Było późne przedpołudnie, ale rynek był niemal zupełnie pusty. Tylko kilka osób sprzedawało warzywa w pobliżu kościoła, a poza tym niewiele się tam działo.

A few steps from the square are three bridges crossing the Pitumarca River, built in three different periods: Inca, Colonial, and Republican.

The oldest one is the Inca bridge, originally part of the Qhapaq Ñan (the Great Road) - the enormous road network that connected the Inca Empire. Its builders designed paths that adapted to the terrain and allowed travelers to reduce their effort. What stands there today is a reconstruction, using the traditional technique of braided plant fibers, grass and sticks. Looking at it, it is easy to understand why it sways when you walk across. It looks rather improvised at first, but the Inca suspension-bridge technique was remarkably sophisticated: thick natural-fiber cables were anchored to stone supports on either side of the river, with the walkway suspended between them.

Next to it is the colonial bridge, built from carefully cut stone joined with lime and constructed in the 18th century. It replaced the earlier crossing and was an important route between the communities on either side of the river. There was even a toll charged for crossing it, collected for the Spanish Crown and the local authorities.

Najstarszy jest most inkaski, który pierwotnie był częścią Qhapaq Ñan (Wielkiej Drogi) - sieci dróg łączącej całe imperium Inków. Trasy projektowano tak, aby jak najlepiej dopasować je do terenu i ułatwić podróżującym pokonywanie gór. Dzisiejszy most jest rekonstrukcją wykonaną tradycyjną techniką, z wykorzystaniem plecionych włókien roślinnych, trawy i patyków. Już tylko patrząc na niego łatwo jest zrozumieć, dlaczego się kołysze podczas przechodzenia po nim. Na pierwszy rzut oka wygląda wręcz trochę prowizorycznie, ale sama technika budowy inkaskich mostów wiszących była niezwykle pomysłowa. Grube liny z naturalnych włókien mocowano do kamiennych konstrukcji po obu stronach rzeki, a pomiędzy nimi zawieszano kładkę.

Tuż obok stoi kolonialny most z kamieni połączonych zaprawą wapienną, zbudowany w XVIII wieku. Zastąpił on wcześniejszy mniejszy most i przez długi czas był ważnym połączeniem między miejscowościami po obu stronach rzeki. Co ciekawe, za przejście przez ten most pobierano opłatę, z której korzystała hiszpańska Korona i lokalne władze.

The third bridge is from the Republican period and is made of iron. Together, the three bridges are almost like a physical history of Checacupe: the Inca road system, the Spanish colonial period and then the modernisation of Peru after independence, all represented within a few metres of each other.

Trzeci most pochodzi z okresu republikańskiego i jest wykonany z żelaza. Razem tworzą właściwie małą historię Checacupe - od inkaskiej sieci dróg, przez hiszpańskie czasy kolonialne, aż po modernizację Peru po uzyskaniu niepodległości. Wszystko to w odległości zaledwie kilku metrów.

Obviously, we crossed all three, but the Inca bridge was easily the most memorable. It swayed noticeably with every step, and crossing it was much more entertaining than walking over the solid bridges next door. And so we crossed it a dozen times...

Oczywiście przeszliśmy przez wszystkie trzy, ale most inkaski zdecydowanie zapadł nam w pamięć najbardziej. Kołysał się przy każdym kroku, a przejście po nim było znacznie ciekawsze niż spacer po solidnych mostch obok. No i z tego powodu przeszliśmy nim chyba z tuzin razy...

Casa Adina Premium

Our first hotel in Cusco, Plaza de Armas, may have been relatively modest, but its location was impossible to beat. A balcony overlooking the cathedral, hot chocolate in hand, and the city's main square at your feet – it was ridiculously good value. For our next two nights, however, we traded the front-row view for a history lesson, with a solid splash of luxury.

Casa Andina Premium occupies a beautifully restored 17th-century colonial mansion, tucked away in a quieter part of the city yet only a short walk from Plaza de Armas and the Qorikancha. In fact, it consists of two interconnected buildings arranged around spacious courtyards. The older colonial wing, dating back to the 17th century, houses the restaurant, bar, and several elegant lounges while preserving sections of the original stonework that have survived centuries of Cusco's turbulent history.

This layering of history is what gives the hotel its character. In Cusco, buildings are rarely built instead of one another – they are built on top of one another. Colonial walls rise above finely crafted Inca stone foundations, creating a fascinating blend of two very different worlds.

Nasz pierwszy hotel w Cusco, tuż przy Plaza de Armas, może nie należał do najbardziej luksusowych, ale pod względem położenia trudno byłoby znaleźć leszy. Poranna gorąca czekolada na balkonie z widokiem na katedrę i główny plac miasta była jednym z tych momentów, których na pewno łatwo nie zapomnimy. W dodatku wszystko to w bardzo atrakcyjnej cenie. Kolejne dwie noce postanowiliśmy jednak spędzić w miejscu oferującym sporą dawkę historii i równie dużą dawkę luksusu.

Casa Andina Premium mieści się w pieczołowicie odrestaurowanej XVII-wiecznej rezydencji kolonialnej, położonej w spokojniejszej części centrum, ale wciąż zaledwie kilka minut spacerem od Plaza de Armas. Hotel tworzą dwa połączone ze sobą budynki skupione wokół przestronnych dziedzińców. Starsza, kolonialna część mieści restaurację, bar i lounge. W tej części zachowały się fragmenty oryginalnych kamiennych murów, które przetrwały burzliwe dzieje Cusco.

To właśnie ta wielowarstwowość historii nadaje temu miejscu wyjątkowy charakter. W Cusco nowe budynki rzadko powstawały od podstaw - znacznie częściej wznoszono je na fundamentach wcześniejszych konstrukcji. W efekcie kolonialne mury wyrastają tu wprost z perfekcyjnie obrobionych inkaskich kamiennych bloków, łącząc odmienne epoki i kultury.

The courtyards were rarely empty. Throughout the day, local women dressed in colourful traditional Andean clothing displayed handmade textiles and souvenirs. One of them was accompanied by a remarkably patient llama.

Główny dziedziniec prawie nigdy nie był pusty. Przez cały dzień lokalne kobiety, ubrane w kolorowe tradycyjne stroje andyjskie, prezentowały ręcznie wykonane tkaniny oraz różnego rodzaju pamiątki. Jednej z nich cierpliwie towarzyszyła lama, której nie wydawało się bardzo przeszkadzać, że każdy chce mieć z nią zdjęcie.

One detail I particularly appreciated was that the hotel doesn't simply decorate its walls with old paintings. Many of the portraits and historical artworks are accompanied by explanatory panels, turning a stroll through the corridors into a miniature museum of colonial Cusco.

Bardzo spodobało mi się również to, że hotel nie ogranicza się do wieszania na ścianach zabytkowych obrazów. Wiele portretów i historycznych dzieł opatrzono opisami wyjaśniającymi ich znaczenie, dzięki czemu zwykły spacer korytarzami przypominał zwiedzanie niewielkiego muzeum poświęconego kolonialnej historii Cusco.

Our room was a suite in the colonial wing and struck a lovely balance between old and new. The centuries-old building provided all the atmosphere, while modern comforts ensured we wanted for nothing. The enormous king-size bed was probably the largest we encountered during the trip. There was even a fireplace, and a small balcony overlooked a little square in front of the main entrance. Historic photographs of Cusco adorned the walls, while the spacious rain shower reminded us that some aspects of modern life are definitely worth embracing.

Nasz pokój był przestronnym apartamentem w kolonialnym skrzydle i doskonale łączył historyczny klimat z nowoczesną wygodą. Zabytkowe wnętrza tworzyły niepowtarzalną atmosferę, a współczesne udogodnienia sprawiały, że niczego nam nie brakowało. Ogromne łóżko typu king-size było chyba największym, w jakim spaliśmy podczas całej podróży. Do tego kominek oraz niewielki balkon z widokiem na plac przed głównym wejściem dodawały temu miejscu wyjątkowego uroku. Historyczne fotografie Cusco zdobiły ściany, a przestronny prysznic z deszczownicą przypominał, że niektóre zdobycze współczesnego świata potrafią umilić życie.

In one of the hotel's lounges, coca tea, alongside more familiar varieties of tea, was always available. Before and after hours spent wandering Cusco's steep streets, sitting down with a hot drink was a real pleasure. Do not tell anyone how much coca tea we drank…

W jednym z hotelowych saloników przez cały dzień czekała na gości bezpłatna herbata – zarówno ta tradycyjna tutaj z liści koki, jak i kilka bardziej klasycznych gatunków. Po długich spacerach stromymi uliczkami Cusco filiżanka gorącego naparu smakowała nam zawsze wyjątkowo dobrze. Tylko nikomu nie mówcie, ile tej herbaty z koki wypiliśmy…

Second breakfast at Alma

Today we came down for breakfast rather early, which meant I managed to take quite a few pictures for the blog before the restaurant got busy.

Breakfast at Alma is quite decent, with a good selection of breads, meats and cheeses, eggs, fruit, vegetables, cereals, juices and desserts. Everything is fresh and tasty, and it takes a bit of self- control not to overeat.

Dziś zeszliśmy na śniadanie dość wcześnie, dzięki czemu udało mi się zrobić sporo zdjęć do bloga, zanim restauracja zapełniła się gośćmi.

Śniadania w Alma są całkiem przyzwoite. Wybór pieczywa, wędlin i serów jest duży, do tego jajka, owoce, warzywa, płatki, soki i desery. Wszystko świeże i smaczne, a największym wyzwaniem jest nie nałożyć sobie za dużo.

After filling our savoury plates, we followed them up with some tasty pancakes and plenty of fruit. We are now ready for a new adventure.

Before that, though, let me talk a little more about Casa Andina in my next entry.

Po solidnej porcji wytrawnych rzeczy skusiliśmy się jeszcze na smaczne naleśniki i sporą porcję owoców. Teraz jesteśmy już gotowi na kolejną przygodę.

Kinky Boots

We bought the tickets for Kinky Boots many months ago, but then my work trip to China was scheduled for dates that included the performance. Fortunately, we managed to exchange our tickets for an earlier performance. We only had to pay the difference in price for better seats. Well, no regrets!

There are musicals that entertain you for a couple of hours, and there are musicals that stay with you long after the curtain falls. Kinky Boots manages to do both.

Bilety na Kinky Boots kupiliśmy z kilkumiesięcznym wyprzedzeniem. Później okazało się, że mój wyjazd służbowy do Chin wypada dokładnie w terminie spektaklu. Na szczęście udało nam się zamienić bilety na wcześniejszy termin – musieliśmy jedynie dopłacić różnicę za lepsze miejsca. I powiem tylko, że było warto.

Są musicale, które po prostu dostarczają rozrywki na dwa czy trzy godziny. Są też takie, o których myśli się jeszcze długo po wyjściu z teatru. Kinky Boots zdecydowanie należy do tej drugiej kategorii.

What many people don't realise is that the story is rooted in real life. It was inspired by Steve Pateman, a Northamptonshire businessman who discovered an unusual niche – making women's boots in men's sizes for drag artists. His story became the 2005 British film, which was later transformed into the award-winning musical featuring music and lyrics by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

Set in the traditional Price & Son shoe factory in Northampton, the story follows Charlie Price, who unexpectedly inherits the struggling family business after his father's death. The factory is facing closure, and with it the livelihoods of the people Charlie has known since childhood is threatened. Everything changes when he meets Lola, a charismatic drag queen whose confidence, humour and honesty inspire Charlie to look at the business from a completely different perspective. Together they discover an untapped market and begin creating the famous "kinky boots"

On the surface, it is a story about saving a shoe factory. Underneath, it is about acceptance, identity and finding the courage to be yourself. Charlie's factory workers have never met anyone quite like Lola before, and their first reactions are not always welcoming. Watching those barriers slowly disappear is one of the most satisfying parts of the show. Despite tackling prejudice and difficult subjects, the musical never feels heavy. Instead, it delivers its message with warmth, humour and an incredible amount of sparkle.

Niewiele osób wie, że historia oparta jest na prawdziwych wydarzeniach. Inspiracją był Steve Pateman, przedsiębiorca z Northamptonshire, który uratował swoją fabrykę obuwia, znajdując bardzo nietypową niszę – produkcję damskich butów w męskich rozmiarach dla artystów drag. Na podstawie tej historii powstał najpierw brytyjski film z 2005 roku, a później nagradzany musical z muzyką i tekstami piosenek autorstwa legendarnej Cyndi Lauper.

Akcja rozgrywa się w tradycyjnej fabryce obuwia Price & Son w Northampton. Charlie Price niespodziewanie dziedziczy rodzinny biznes, który od dłuższego czasu zmaga się z problemami finansowymi. Zamknięcie fabryki oznaczałoby utratę pracy dla ludzi, których zna on od dziecka. Wszystko zmienia się, gdy na jego drodze pojawia się Lola – charyzmatyczna drag queen, która pokazuje mu zupełnie inne spojrzenie na świat i pomaga odkryć nowy kierunek rozwoju firmy. Tak rodzi się pomysł na słynne "kinky boots".

Choć na pierwszy rzut oka jest to historia o ratowaniu fabryki, tak naprawdę opowiada o akceptacji, przełamywaniu uprzedzeń i odwadze, by być sobą. Pracownicy fabryki początkowo nie wiedzą, co myśleć o Loli, ale z czasem uczą się patrzeć na nią bez stereotypów. To właśnie ta przemiana sprawia, że musical ma w sobie znacznie więcej głębi, niż można by się spodziewać.

The current production, directed by Nikolai Foster, is visually spectacular. As the curtain rises, the enormous stage of the London Coliseum reveals an impressively realistic factory floor, complete with workstations, industrial machinery and a towering iron staircase leading to the office overlooking the workers below. The contrast between this gritty industrial setting and the colourful world of drag works brilliantly throughout the performance.

The costumes deserve a standing ovation of their own. They are dazzling, extravagant and wonderfully over the top - exactly what you would hope for from a musical with "Kinky" in its title. Sequins, feathers, towering red boots and endless costume changes fill the stage with colour, while the vibrant lighting design makes every scene burst with energy.

The music is another highlight. Cyndi Lauper's score is packed with memorable songs, including The Land of Lola, Sex Is in the Heel and The Most Beautiful Thing, each perfectly capturing the emotion and excitement of the story.

Obecna inscenizacja w reżyserii Nikolaia Fostera robi ogromne wrażenie. Już po podniesieniu kurtyny oczom widzów ukazuje się realistycznie odtworzona hala produkcyjna z maszynami, stanowiskami pracy i charakterystycznymi metalowymi schodami prowadzącymi do biura. Surowe wnętrze fabryki świetnie kontrastuje z pełnym kolorów i blasku światem drag.

Na osobne brawa zasługują kostiumy. Jest brokat, cekiny, pióra, spektakularne czerwone kozaki i mnóstwo pięknych kreacji – dokładnie to, czego można oczekiwać po musicalu ze słowem „kinky” w tytule. Całość dopełnia dynamiczne oświetlenie, które sprawia, że scena często dosłownie mieni się kolorami.

Muzyka Cyndi Lauper także wpada w ucho od pierwszych minut. Piosenki takie jak The Land of Lola, Sex Is in the Heel czy The Most Beautiful Thing doskonale oddają klimat spektaklu, a świetna choreografia i energia całego zespołu sprawiają, że trudno usiedzieć spokojnie w fotelu.

This production also features two familiar faces for British audiences. Johannes Radebe, best known from Strictly Come Dancing, makes an unforgettable West End debut as Lola, bringing incredible charisma, elegance and warmth to the role. Alongside him, former X Factor winner Matt Cardle takes on the role of Charlie Price.

Perhaps what makes Kinky Boots feel even more relevant today is its message. At a time when many members of the LGBTQ+ community still face prejudice and discrimination, this joyful celebration of inclusivity feels as important as ever. It reminds us that understanding often begins simply by listening to one another, and that our differences can become our greatest strengths.

Filled with fantastic music, stunning costumes, fierce choreography, killer heels and plenty of laughter, Kinky Boots is much more than a feel-good musical. It is an uplifting reminder that everyone deserves the chance to stand proud, be accepted and walk confidently in their own shoes.

To musical, który nie tylko bawi, ale też zostawia po sobie coś więcej niż kilka wpadających w ucho melodii…

Rucula

After enjoying both Yaku and Organika, it seems only natural that we end up at Rucula as well. It is another restaurant from the same family, sharing the same philosophy of fresh local ingredients and a relaxed atmosphere. The menu combines Peruvian flavours with international influences, and many of the vegetables come straight from the restaurant's own garden.

Po wizytach w Yaku i Organice kolejnym oczywistym przystankiem była dla nas Rucula. To kolejna restauracja należąca do tej samej rodziny, oparta na podobnej filozofii świeżych, lokalnych składników i swobodnej atmosfery. W menu peruwiańskie smaki spotykają się z inspiracjami z różnych stron świata, a część warzyw pochodzi prosto z ich własnego ogrodu.

We begin with soups. The pumpkin cream is smooth, warming and exactly what we need after a long day. The chicken noodle soup is equally comforting.

Na początek zamawiamy zupy. Aksamitny, rozgrzewający Kkrem z dyni jest dokładnie tym, czego potrzebujemy po długim dniu zwiedzania. Równie dobrze smakuje nam peruwiański  rosół z makaronem.

For our mains, I order wok stir-fry quinoa with mushrooms, vegetables and tamarind sauce. The quinoa works surprisingly well in this Asian-inspired dish, and the tamarind gives it a pleasant sweet-and-sour kick. Marcin tries the lomo saltado, one of Peru's best-known dishes. Tender beef is stir-fried with onions and tomatoes and served with French fries and rice.

Na danie główne ja wybieram komosę ryżową smażoną w woku z grzybami, warzywami i sosem tamaryndowym. Quinoa świetnie odnajduje się w tym inspirowanym kuchnią azjatycką daniu, a tamaryndowiec dodaje mu przyjemnej słodko-kwaśnej nuty. Marcin zamawia lomo saltado, jedno z najbardziej znanych dań Peru. Delikatna wołowina smażona jest z cebulą i pomidorami, a całość podawana z frytkami i ryżem.

For drinks, we share a teapot of Organica, their famous fresh herb tea, and a pisco sour. The tea is fragrant and refreshing, while the pisco sour reminds us that we are still very much in Peru.

Dessert is ponderación, a crispy cookie spiral served with yolk cream and vanilla ice cream. We are instructed to crush the cookie and soak it in the cream before eating. We follow the instructions diligently and are rewarded with a delicious mess of crunchy biscuit, silky cream and melting ice cream.

By now, it is clear that Yaku, Organika and Rucula all share the same strengths: fresh ingredients, creative cooking and a genuine focus on local produce. After three visits, we can safely say that this restaurant family has become one of our favourite discoveries in Cusco.

Do picia dzielimy się dzbankiem Organica - ich słynnej herbaty ze świeżych ziół - oraz pisco sour. Herbata jest aromatyczna i odświeżająca, natomiast pisco sour przypomina nam, że wciąż jesteśmy w Peru.

Na deser wybieramy ponderación - chrupiący spiralny herbatnik podawany z kremem jajecznym i lodami waniliowymi. Obsługa instruuje nas, by pokruszyć ciastko i namoczyć je w kremie przed jedzeniem. Sumiennie stosujemy się do wskazówek i w nagrodę dostajemy pyszne połączenie chrupkości, aksamitnego kremu i rozpływających się lodów.

Po trzech wizytach nie mamy już wątpliwości, że Yaku, Organica i Rucula mają ze sobą wiele wspólnego: świeże składniki, kreatywne podejście do gotowania i autentyczne przywiązanie do lokalnych produktów. Ta restauracyjna rodzina bez wątpienia należy do naszych ulubionych odkryć kulinarnych w Cusco.
