Pickled Frog

Before heading to the Salisbury cathedral show today, we decided to grab a bite at Pickled Frog, a cosy restaurant set in a building that dates back to around 1420. It's got that charming, timber-framed feel typical of Market Square corner tenements. The roof is mostly original, 95% to be exact, the first floor is about 60% original, but sadly, just 10% of the ground floor remains from the old days.

Zanim udaliśmy się dzisiaj na pokazy w katedrze, postanowiliśmy wpaść na obiad do Pickled Frog, przytulnej restauracji mieszczącej się w budynku pochodzącym z około 1420 roku. Budynek ten jest wpisany na listę zabytków Salisbury. Dach jest w większości (95%) oryginalny, pierwsze piętro jest oryginalne w około 60%, ale niestety, tylko 10% parteru pozostało z dawnych czasów.

For starters, we went with some tapas—mozzarella sticks, jalapeño flammers, and vegetable spring rolls. For the main course, I opted for the mussels in white wine cream sauce, while Marcin chose a classic burger. The food was very decent. We rounded off the meal with hot chocolate and coffee, and then it was time to make our way to the cathedral.

Jako startery wybraliśmy tapas — paluszki mozzarelli, flammers z jalapeño i sajgonki warzywne. Jako danie główne ja wzięłam małże w sosie śmietanowym z białego wina, a Marcin klasycznego burgera. Jedzenie było bardzo przyzwoite. Zakończyliśmy posiłek gorącą czekoladą (ja) i kawą (M), a potem nadszedł czas, aby udać się do katedry.

Dinner at Jemaa el-Fnaa

Tonight, we return to the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa for dinner. As we stroll through the bustling square, we’re drawn to one of the inviting stalls serving a variety of grilled foods. We decide to order some freshly grilled fish, chicken, and colourful salads. The food is delicious, and the lively atmosphere surrounding us adds to the experience.

Dziś wieczorem wracamy na kolację do placu Jemaa el-Fnaa. Przechodząc między rzędami straganów naszą uwagę przyciąga  jeden z tych, które serwują potrawy z grilla. Zamawiamy tu świeżo grillowaną rybę, kurczaka i kolorowe sałatki. Jedzenie jest pyszne, a atmosfera bardzo przyjemna.

As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, the square comes alive. The sounds of sizzling grills, the cries of the sellers, laughter, music, and singing fill the air, creating an unforgettable backdrop for our meal.

Gdy słońce chowa się za horyzontem, malując niebo odcieniami pomarańczy i fioletu, Jemaa el-Fna Marrakeszu ożywa. Dźwięki skwierczących grilli, krzyki sprzedawców, śmiech, muzyka i śpiew wypełniają powietrze, tworząc niezapomniane tło dla naszego posiłku.

Jemaa el-Fna and dinner at El Fenn

Jemaa el-Fna (also known as Djemaa el-Fna), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most iconic and bustling public squares in Marrakech. Located in the heart of Marrakech's old Medina, near the Koutoubia Mosque, it has a rich history of serving as a meeting point for regional farmers, tradesmen, storytellers, and healers. Today, the square is surrounded by bustling bazaars, vibrant cafes, and historic mosques. While it is relatively quiet during the day, Jemaa el-Fna transforms into the pulsing heart of the medina at night.

In the afternoon, food stalls and performers begin to appear, and by sunset, the square is packed with people from all over the city. We only stopped by for a brief visit on a way to dinner, to grab some freshly squeezed juice and take an orientation walk around the area.

Jemaa el-Fna (Dżamaa el-Fna) jest wpisana na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO.  Jest to jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych i tętniących życiem placów w Marrakeszu. Położony w samym sercu starej medyny, w pobliżu meczetu Koutoubia, plac ten ma długą tradycję bycia miejscem spotkań regionalnych rolników, kupców, gawędziarzy i uzdrowicieli. Dziś otaczają go gwarne bazary, kawiarnie i zabytkowe meczety.

Choć w ciągu dnia jest tu stosunkowo pusto, w nocy Jemaa el-Fna zamienia się w pulsujące serce medyny. Po południu zaczynają pojawiać się stragany z jedzeniem i artyści, a o zachodzie słońca plac zapełnia się po korek ludźmi z całego miasta. Zatrzymaliśmy się tu dzisiaj tylko na krótką wizytę w drodze na kolację, aby napić się świeżo wyciśniętego soku i zorientować, co i jak.

Unfortunately, our dinner experience at El Fenn was somewhat of a letdown. Although they had checked our reservation, we were initially seated in the bar area and subsequently forgotten about. After prompting them to rectify the situation, we were finally moved to our table. The dinner was decent but not particularly impressive. A few hours later, I was struck with food poisoning, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was either the juice or dinner that had caused my condition. Marcin had shared the juice with me, and he remained unscathed so I am thinking El Fenn... The next day is just bed and restroom, until the late afternoon when we have to change the riad.

Niestety kolacja w El Fenn nas trochę rozczarowała. Chociaż personel sprawdził przy wejściu naszą rezerwację, początkowo posadzili nas po stronie baru i zapomnieli o naszym istnieniu. Po tym, jak Marcin się wreszcie zirytował, w końcu przeniesiono nas do restauracji. Jedzenie było przyzwoite, ale nie imponujące. Za to kilka godzin później dopadło mnie zatrucie pokarmowe i jego przyczyną mógł być jedynie sok lub obiad. Marcin pił ten sam sok i pozostał bez szwanku, więc myślę, że El Fenn mi zafundował tą zabawę... Następnego dnia praktycznie nie ma w moim życiorysie… Spędzam go pół na pół w łóżku i łazience az do późnego popołudnia, kiedy musimy zmienić riad.

Le Kilim

We enjoyed our dinner at Nomad, so today we decided to dine at Nomad’s sister restaurant located in Gueliz – Le Kilim. The interior is very airy, with traditional elements blending beautifully with a contemporary setup, and dark red dominating the colour palette. The food also showcases a contemporary approach to Moroccan cuisine, which we thoroughly appreciate.

Kolacja w Nomadzie była bardzo przyjemna, dlatego dzisiaj postanowiliśmy zjeść w siostrzanej restauracji Nomada zlokalizowanej w Gueliz – Le Kilim. Wnętrze jest bardzo przestronne, a tradycyjne elementy pięknie komponują się ze współczesną aranżacją. W palecie kolorów dominuje ciemnoczerwony. Jedzenie prezentuje także współczesne podejście do kuchni marokańskiej, co bardzo sobie chwalimy.

We ordered a Tapas platter to share, which consisted of Chicken dips, briouates (similar to samosas), crispy potatoes, arancini, and homemade guacamole, followed by mains centred around fish. The food was delicious, and it was challenging to leave some room in our bellies for a café we noticed on the way here.

Zamówiliśmy talerz tapas do podziału, który składał się z kurczaka, briouates (podobnych do samoa), chrupiących ziemniaków, arancini, sosów i domowego guacamole, a następnie dania główne na bazie ryb. Jedzenie było pyszne i ciężko było zostawić trochę miejsca w na deser w kawiarni, którą zauważyliśmy po drodze.

Euljiro

Our hotel is officially located in Myeongdong, but I believe it’s actually situated in Euljiro 3-ga, or at the border between these two districts. Euljiro is often described as one of the hippest neighbourhoods in Seoul.

Before dinner, we take a short walk and almost immediately stumble upon a place that looks like it was pulled straight from a Webtoon. It’s a neon-drenched, long, narrow street that was previously known as Chungmuro Printer’s Alley, where printing houses used to operate their presses continuously throughout the day. After the decline of the printing industry, restaurants and bars began to emerge in the vacated buildings like mushroom after rain.

Nasz hotel oficjalnie znajduje się w Myeongdong, ale sądzę, że w rzeczywistości jest położony w Euljiro (czyt. Yldżiro) 3-ga, lub na granicy tych dwóch dzielnic. Euljiro jest często opisywane jako jedna z najbardziej popularnych dzielnic w Seulu.

Przed kolacją robimy krótki spacer i niemal natychmiast trafiamy na miejsce, które wygląda, jakby zostało wyjęte prosto z komiksu. To długa, wąska ulica, oświetlona neonami, wcześniej znana jako Chungmuro ​​Printer’s Alley, gdzie drukarnie nieprzerwanie przez cały dzień obsługiwały swoje prasy. Po upadku przemysłu drukarskiego restauracje i bary zaczęły pojawiać się w opuszczonych budynkach jak grzyby po deszczu.

As we continue our exploration, we come across some impressive murals.

Eventually, we find ourselves back at Euljiro Nogari Alley (을지로 노가리골목), where the tantalizing aroma of fried chicken draws us into one of the eateries. And just like that, tonight’s dinner is Chimaek (치맥; a combination of the Korean words chikin 'fried chicken' and maekju 'beer').

W końcu trafiamy po raz kolejny na Euljiro Nogari Alley (을지로 노가리골목), gdzie kuszący aromat smażonego kurczaka wciąga nas do jednej z jadłodajni. I tak oto dzisiejszą kolacją jest tradycyjmy koreański Chimaek (치맥; połączenie koreańskich słów chikin „smażony kurczak” i maekju „piwo”).
