Whales Beneath the Vaulted Ceiling

Last night, we stepped into a truly unforgettable world inside Winchester Cathedral—one filled with deep blue light, haunting music, and… whales.

Yes, whales. Three monumental sperm whale sculptures, suspended from the nave of the ancient cathedral, seemed to float through the air above us. The largest measured over five meters long. Created by artist Tessa Campbell Fraser, these breathtaking sculptures formed the centrepiece of an immersive exhibition that blends art, science, and awe.

We were there for a special event hosted by the University of Southampton—an evening of talks, performances, and reflection titled Whales: A Journey Through Worlds. It explored the incredible ways whales shape not just the ocean, but our entire planet, our laws, and even our imaginations.

Three standout talks anchored the night:

• Professor Jon Copley shared astonishing insights about deep-sea ecosystems that form around whale carcasses, turning death into life for countless ocean creatures.

• Dr Ryan Reisinger spoke about whale migrations and how these giants connect oceans across the globe, influencing ecosystems and even human life.

• Dr Dina Lupin took us into the world of environmental law, revealing how whales are reshaping legal thinking about nature and rights.

And between the lectures, the evening flowed with poetry and live music.

Wczoraj wieczorem przenieśliśmy się do zupełnie innego świata — świata błękitnego światła, nastrojowej muzyki i… wielorybów.

Tak, wielorybów. Trzy monumentalne rzeźby tych ssaków, stworzone przez artystkę Tessę Campbell Fraser, zawisły pod sklepieniem nawy głównej w katedrze w Winchesterze.

Pojawiliśmysię tam na wyjątkowe wydarzenie zorganizowane przez Uniwersytet w Southampton – wieczór pod hasłem Whales: A Journey Through Worlds, pełen wykładów, występów artystycznych i refleksji. Tematem przewodnim były wieloryby i ich niezwykły wpływ na oceany, ekosystemy, kulturę i prawo.

Najważniejsze były trzy wykłady:

• Profesor Jon Copley opowiadał o ekosystemach, które tworzą się na dnie oceanu wokół martwych wielorybów – śmierć jednych daje życie innym.

• Dr Ryan Reisinger mówił o migracjach wielorybów i o tym, jak te olbrzymy łączą ze sobą oceany, wpływając na środowisko i życie ludzi.

• Dr Dina Lupin przedstawiła fascynujące spojrzenie na rolę wielorybów w prawie – i jak zmieniają one sposób, w jaki myślimy o naturze i sprawiedliwości.

Między wykładami zaś rozbrzmiewała poezja i muzyka na żywo.

Dao

We noticed a new little spot called DAO that opened up in town. It’s a small Asian restaurant with a simple menu, but it’s pretty cool.

Zauważyliśmy nowe miejsce o nazwie DAO, które otworzyło się w centrum. To mała azjatycka restauracja z prostym menu, ale całkiem fajna.

You start by choosing either rice or noodles, then decide whether you want it dry or as ramen. We opted for the noodles in ramen form. Next, you can select your vegetables and proteins. Finally, you can spice it up as much as you want. The food was tasty, and we both left feeling full but not as if we had eaten a brick.

Zaczynasz od wyboru ryżu lub makaronu, a następnie decydujesz czy chcesz danie suche, czy w formie ramenu. My oczywiście wybraliśmy ramen. Następnie możesz wybrać warzywa i białka. Na koniec możesz dodać tyle przypraw, ile chcesz. Jedzenie było smaczne, a oboje wyszliśmy najedzeni, ale nie obżarci.

Christmas at Kew (2024 edition) part 2

The path leads us to what would be the first installation if we entered via Elizabeth Gate. We walk through a lit archway with star projections on the ground and into Snowy Lane, where illuminated silver and golden deer and reindeer are scattered among the trees. Representing friendly woodland spirits, they draw us into a fairy-tale atmosphere of the trail. Golden spruces and birch trees made from sparkling lights add to the effect.

Ścieżka prowadzi nas dalej do miejsca, które byłoby początkiem trasy, gdybyśmy weszli przez Elizabeth Gate. Przechodzimy przez podświetlony łuk w kształcie komety i trafiamy na Snowy Lane, gdzie między drzewami stoją świecące srebrnym i złotym światłem jelenie i renifery. Symbolizują one przyjazne duchy lasu i wprowadzają bajkowy klimat już od pierwszych kroków trasy. Całość dopełniają złote „świerki” i „brzozy”, stworzone z migoczących świateł.

We then approach Threshold, a five-metre-high structure shaped like a pair of spreading wings that slowly changes colour. It serves as a prelude to the next installation, Ombre, where clusters of six-petalled flowers gradually shift through different colours, creating a mesmerising effect. The remaining puddles from the rain reflect the light beautifully.

To warm ourselves up, we go for mulled wine/ hot chocolate.

Następnie pojawia się Threshold - pięciometrowa konstrukcja przypominająca rozłożone skrzydła, powoli zmieniająca kolory. To zapowiedź instalacji Ombre, gdzie kwiaty o sześciu płatkach płynnie przechodzą przez różne barwy. Światło pięknie odbija się w kałużach pozostałych po deszczu.

Aby się trochę rozgrzać, zatrzymujemy sie w barze na grzańca i gorącą czekoladę.

Then we approach the second major highlight of the trail: the Sea of Lights. This large-scale - enormous, really - ­installation fills the area in front of the Temperate House with thousands of LED light spheres moving in waves to a soundtrack. Beginning in the cedar trees, the lights flow across the lawn and over the building. It is truly impressive, and quite possibly my favourite installation this year.

Kolejnym głównym punktem programu jest Sea of Lights. To ogromna instalacja przed Temperate House: tysiące kul LEDowych świateł poruszają się falami w rytm muzyki. Światła zaczynają się wśród cedrów, rozlewają po całym trawniku i obejmują nawet budynek. Efekt jest imponujący i to prawdopodobnie moja ulubiona instalacja w tym roku.

In Cherry Tree Avenue, we encounter Sakura. The trees are lit from below by rings of bright neon at the base of their trunks, with colours and intensity changing in synchronisation with music.

W alei wiśniowej czeka instalacja Sakura. Drzewa są podświetlone neonowymi pierścieniami światła u podstawy pni, a ich kolory i intensywność zmieniają się w synchronizacji z muzyką.

We then pass Father Christmas and arrive at the fairground area, where the catering is located, and happily stop to devour a pizza (me) or rice with meat (Marcin).

Mijamy Świętego Mikołaja i docieramy do części z punktami gastronomicznymi, gdzie z przyjemnością robimy przerwę na pizzę (ja) i danie z mięsem i ryżem (Marcin).

The trail continues through the Sparkle Trees, where beams of light cut through the mist and thousands of sparkling points create something of a disco atmosphere. We saw this installation last year at Hillier Gardens (see my relevant blog entry), but it remains a lot of fun.

Dalsza część trasy prowadzi przez Sparkle Trees. Promienie laserów przecinają mgłę, a tysiące migoczących punktów tworzą niemal dyskotekową atmosferę. Widzieliśmy tę instalację już w zeszłym roku w Hillier Gardens (patrz mój wpis do bloga na ten temat), ale nadal robi ona na nas wrażenie.

The Baton Show, located near the treetop walkway, is difficult to photograph but very pleasant to watch. Rows upon rows of batons spread changing light patterns across the ground.

As we walk along the pond and cross an illuminated bridge, fish made of light bulbs appear to leap out of the water.

The Haze Arches - semi-circular light structures with mist emphasising the light - line the path across the bridge. They look as if they were steaming.

Baton Show w okolicach treetop walkway jest trudny do sfotografowania, ale bardzo efektowny na żywo. Długie rzędy świetlnych pałeczek pulsują zmieniając wzory i kolory.

Przechodząc obok stawu i przez podświetlony most, widzimy „świetlne ryby” wyskakujące z wody.

Haze Arches – lampy w postaci łuków, gdzie kolorowe światła podkreślone są przez mgiełkę (wygląda to, jakby lampy parowały) - towarzyszą nam na całej długości mostu.

Hillier Garden Light Up Trail

Last Thursday, the Light Up Trail opened at Hillier Gardens in Romsey, and we chose it as our official inauguration of the festive season this year.

The trail begins with a real sense of drama: a beautiful arched, multicoloured tunnel leads into a magical display of oversized illuminated creatures, a giant bauble you can step inside, and the word Christmas spelled out in enormous glowing letters.

W zeszły czwartek rozpoczął się „Light Up Trail” w Hillier Gardens w Romsey i właśnie tam postanowiliśmy rozpocząć nasz sezon świąteczny w tym roku.

Trasa zaczyna się bardzo efektownie - przechodzimy przez piękny, wielobarwny tunel świetlny w kształcie łuku, który wprowadza nas do bajkowej scenerii z ogromnymi, podświetlanymi reniferami, choinkami i gigantyczną bombką, do której można wejść, oraz napisem Christmas ułożonym z wielkich, świecących liter.

Further along, we came across a meadow dotted with giant baubles, each featuring charming children’s designs projected onto their surfaces. This was followed by a section of beautifully lit trees - some adorned with glowing “chandeliers,” others animated with projections of Christmas trees across their silhouettes.

Idąc dalej, trafiamy na polanę z wielkimi bombkami ozdobionymi dziecięcymi rysunkami. Następnie przechodzimy obok pięknie oświetlonych drzew - niektóre z nich udekorowano świetlnymi „żyrandolami”, inne ożywają dzięki projekcjom świątecznie ustrojonych choinek.

One of the highlights of this light path was a long field of illuminated tulips, glowing softly against the darkness, followed by a cluster of giant egg-like structures that slowly changed colours. Around the next corner, we found ourselves surrounded by vibrant neon flowers and butterflies, creating a wonderfully immersive scene.

Jednym z najciekawszych fragmentów trasy było długie pole świecących tulipanów, wyglądające spektakularnie po zmroku. Za nimi trafiliśmy na ogromne instalacje przypominające jajka, powoli zmieniające kolory. Zaś za kolejnym zakrętem otaczyły nas intensywnie świecące neonowe kwiaty i motyle, tworząc bardzo wciągającą, niemal bajkową scenerię.

At the ponds, we stopped to admire the Symphony of Light – a mesmerising light and sound show featuring laser beams reflected in the water, drifting mist, and atmospheric music that brought the whole area to life.

Przy stawach zatrzymujemy się na dłużej, by obejrzeć Symfonię Światła - pokaz światła i dźwięku, z laserami odbijającymi się w tafli wody, unoszącą się mgłą i klimatyczną muzyką.

We then walked along the Magic Footpath, where interactive projections beneath our feet caused flowers to “explode” with every step. We also couldn’t resist the walk-on pianos -light-up installations where jumping on the keys triggered changing colours and playful musical notes.

Throughout the trail, there were plenty of reindeer and festive decorations adding to the seasonal charm. About halfway through, we reached a Christmas market and festive food and drink area, where we stopped to refuel with a German grilled sausage and some freshly made churros - an excellent mid-trail treat.

Kolejnym punktem jest magiczna ścieżka  - odcinek drogi z projekcjami na ziemi, gdzie pod naszymi stopami „wybuchają” kolorowe kwiaty. Nie omijamy też interaktywnych fortepianów: podświetlanych instalacji, po których można skakać, a klawisze reagują dźwiękiem i zmieniającymi się kolorami.

Na całej trasie nie brakuje reniferów i świątecznych dekoracji, które konsekwentnie budują bożonarodzeniowy klimat. Mniej więcej w połowie spaceru był też jarmark świąteczny z jedzeniem i napojami. Zatrzymaliśmy się tam na niemiecką grillowaną kiełbaskę i churrosy  - idealna przerwa na rozgrzanie się i złapanie oddechu.

Amalfi Afternoon Tea

This summer has brought a delightful touch of Italy to Eastleigh, thanks to the Garden Society’s exquisite Amalfi Afternoon Tea combining a modern twist with beloved Italian classics.

Garden Society zabrało nas w ten weekend w kulinarna podróż do Włoch dzięki ich Amalfi Afternoon Tea, serwując ukochane włoskie klasyki z małą nutką…. nie, nie tyle dekadencji, co nowoczesnego podejścia do kuchni.

The savoury selection was great. Our standout favourite was undoubtedly the Peach & Prosciutto Skewers. This charming  little dish perfectly balanced the sweetness of ripe peaches with the savoury richness of prosciutto. Also worth mentioning was the delightful Mini Burrata.

Z części nie słodkiej, naszym ulubionym daniem były szaszłyki z brzoskwinią i prosciutto.To urocze małe danie idealnie równoważyło słodycz dojrzałych brzoskwiń z wytrawnym bogactwem prosciutto. Mini Burrata także była przepyszna.

Moving on to the sweet selections, the Tiramisu Éclair was a particular highlight; it captured the essence of the classic Italian dessert while adding a unique twist that made it incredibly indulgent. And of course, we couldn’t forget the quintessential British element of afternoon tea: scones with clotted cream. Fluffy and warm, they were the perfect finishing touch to an already lavish spread.

Yes, the calories may have piled up, but every delightful bite was entirely worth it.

Przechodząc do deserów, szczególnym hitem były eklery tiramisu oraz oczywiście kwintesencja brytyjskiej popołudniowej herbaty - skony z clotted cream (clotted cream to bardzo, bardzo gęsty krem ze śmietany).

Tak, kalorie mogły się co nieco skumulować, ale każdy pyszny kęs był tego wart.

The lemon sorbet arrived a bit too frozen, but we managed and it was still very refreshing.

Cytrynowy sorbet był trochę za mocno zamrożony, ale daliśmy mu radę i nie wpłynęło to na jego smak.
