Dopamine Land part 2

In the next room, there is a pool filled with plastic balls and changing coloured lights. My inner Labrador is definitely channeled out here.

W następnym pomieszczeniu czeka na nas basen wypełniony plastikowymi piłeczkami i zmieniające się kolorowe lampki. Tu zdecydowanie wyłazi ze mnie mój wewnętrzny labrador.

Then we go through a dark room with many floating lanterns, where we can lie down on a blanket or bean bags and quiet down a little, a room where we can do shadow puppets on the wall and a room where we can play a type of scrabble.

Następnie przechodzimy przez ciemne pomieszczenie z unoszącymi się pod sufitem lampionami, gdzie możemy położyć się na kocu lub poduszkach z fasolą i trochę się wyciszyć, pomieszczenie, w którym możemy zrobić na ścianie kształty z cienia i pomieszczenie, gdzie możemy zagrać w coś w rodzaju scrabble.

In the digital forest room, we can decompress again. It is yet another room that seems much bigger thanks to the clever use of mirrored walls. And it is sometimes a bit confusing for our senses, but that is the fun of it.

W pokoju z cyfrowym lasem możemy ponownie dokonać dekompresji. To kolejne pomieszczenie, które dzięki sprytnemu zastosowaniu lustrzanych ścian wydaje się znacznie większe. Czasami jest ono trochę mylące dla naszych zmysłów, ale to właśnie część zabawy.

And finally, we visit the Pillow Battle Room. Fake windows in this room are lightened as by storm lightings, “Set you free” by N-Trance blasts from the speakers and a pile of cushioned pillows on the floor is waiting for you to grab them up and throw at others. If you have any energy left, this room will take it all.

Na koniec odwiedzamy Pokój Bitwy na Poduszki. Pozorne okna w tym pokoju rozświetlają burzowe błyskawice, z głośników leci „Set you free” N-Trance, a na podłodze leży stos miękkich poduszek- amunicji do sypialnianej walki. Jeśli zostało nam jeszcze trochę energii, ten pokój ją pochłonie.

And that’s it. We went through all the rooms (took us a while), and now it is time to go back to the colourful bar and quench the first. It really was fun.

Koniec i bomba, kto się źle bawił ten trąba. Trochę nam zajęło przejście przez wszystkie pokoje wiec teraz czas ugasić pragnienie w barze. Podsumowanie: było zajefajnie.

Sarum Lights

Around Christmas time there are many light installations around, and we decided to start the season with the Sarum Lights at the Salisbury Cathedral. The Illuminating Art performance is prepared by Luxmuralis.

We start outside with a dramatic display of baroque art on the entire west front of the cathedral. The show lasts 10 minutes but it takes us about 2.5 cycles to get it all in. So after about 25 minutes, we are ready to get inside.

W okresie Bożego Narodzenia wokół nas jest wiele instalacji świetlnych, ale postanawiamy rozpocząć sezon od „Sarum Lights” w katedrze w Salisbury. Spektakl „Sztuka Iluminacji” został przygotowany przez Luxmuralis.

Show zaczyna się na zewnątrz od dramatycznego pokazu sztuki barokowej na całym zachodnim froncie katedry. Jeden cykl wyświetlania obrazów trwa 10 minut, ale ogarnięcie wszystkiego, na co patrzymy zajmuje nam około 2,5 cyklu. Zatem po około 25 minutach jesteśmy gotowi, aby wejść do środka.

 In the Cloisters, we literally walk through various 18th-century philosophy and literature texts.

W Krużgankach dosłownie chodzimy w środku różnych XVIII-wiecznych tekstów filozoficznych i literackich.

After entering the south transept, we can see a “gallery” of images depicting the social changes and philosophical thoughts of the late 17th and 18th Century. The Trinity Chapel explores the conflicts of the late 18th century and early 19th century. War, conflicts, and the abolition of slavery are the main topics of the presentation.

Po wejściu do południowego transeptu naszym oczom ukazuje się „galeria” obrazów przedstawiających przemiany społeczne i myśli filozoficzne końca XVII i XVIII wieku. Kaplica Trójcy Świętej przywołuje konflikty końca XVIII i początku XIX wieku. Głównymi tematami prezentacji są wojny, sprzeczności interesów i zniesienie niewolnictwa.

Then we walk through the sounds and images related to the Industrial Revolution. We are surrounded by engines, gears, cogs and chains that symbolise society overtaken by fast-paced industrial changes.

Dalej idziemy wśród dźwięków i obrazów związanych z rewolucją przemysłową. Otaczają nas różne elementy maszyn, przekładnie, koła zębate i łańcuchy, które symbolizują społeczeństwo opanowane przez szybkie zmiany przemysłowe.

And finally, in the main nave, there is the most dazzling display of poems and paintings including famous pieces by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir or Cezanne. This is my favourite part of the show.

I wreszcie, w nawie głównej,  ma miejscy najbardziej imponująca preentacja wierszy i obrazów, w tym słynnych dzieł Van Gogha, Moneta, Renoira czy Cezanne'a. To moja ulubiona część całego programu.

The Garden Society (afternoon tea)

Today we decided to visit The Garden Society in Eastleigh for an afternoon tea. But to be a bit less naughty, we walked all the way there and returned by Uber. The place turned out to be really cute, and the food was delicious.

Dzisiaj postanowiliśmy udać się na afternoon tea do The Garden Society w Eastleigh . Ale żeby grzech był chodź trochę mniejszy, przeszliśmy całą drogę tam na piechotę, a jedynie wróciliśmy Uberem. Miejsce okazało się naprawdę urocze, a jedzenie pyszne.

As it is still the month of the coronation, this was the light motive of the event. As such, we dined in the company of the king lion and the cakes were adorned with royalty motifs.

Ponieważ jest to wciąż miesiąc koronacji, taki był też motyw przewodni naszego „podwieczorku”. W związku z tym jedliśmy w towarzystwie króla lwa, a ciasta były ozdobione symbolami władzy królewskiej.

And I have bough a lion for my office :)

Breakfast at The Grant

We decided to be (financially) unwise and popped in for breakfast at The Grand. The food was really nice if not a great value for money, let’s face it, and the waiting time was somewhat ridiculous. Good thing we were not in a rush. Still, it was a very peasant morning, and we were just a few meters away from our friend’s jewellery show. More about it in the next entry.

Postanowiliśmy dzisiaj być (finansowo) niezbyt mądrzy i wpadliśmy na śniadanie do The Grand. Jedzenie było naprawdę dobre, chociaż stosunek jakości do ceny, spójrzmy prawdzie w oczy, nie powalał (a raczej powalał, ale z niewłaściwej strony) a czas oczekiwania na kolejne dania był chyba testem na cierpliwość klientów. Dobrze, że za bardzo się nie spieszyliśmy. Mimo wszystko poranek był przyjemny, a dodatkowy bonus śniadania w The Grand (stąd zresztą nasz wybór), to dosłownie kilkumetrowa odległość do pokazu biżuterii zaprzyjaźnionej z nami fantastycznej projektantki. The Black Rat

This time, we decided to visit the second Michelin recommended restaurant in Winchester - The Black Rat. Yeah, it is not your usual restaurant’s name, and neither is the logo on the menu showing the poor black rat pinned down by its four legs (and probably dead, but then it would have been worse had it still been alive, wouldn’t it?)… The restaurant is located in what we call “the black district” as there is also the Black Boy pub, the Black Bottle bar and The Black Hole B&B. Note to myself: do not come here on the 31st October perhaps…

Tym razem postanowiliśmy odwiedzić drugą rekomendowaną przez Michelin restaurację w Winchester - The Black Rat. Tak, nie jest to typowa nazwa dla restauracji, podobnie jak logo w menu przedstawiające czarnego szczura rozłożonego na plecach i przypiętego szpilkami, niczym eksponat w muzeum. Restauracja znajduje się w tak zwanej przez nas  „czarnej dzielnicy”, ponieważ znajduje się tam również pub Black Boy, bar Black Bottle, oraz hotel The Black Hole. Notatka dla siebie: może nie przychodźmy tutaj 31 października…

But here we are. The dining room resembles the old, quirky pub (it used to be a pub!) with some elements of an eccentric bookshop or antique shop thanks to various books, paintings, and other knickknacks and oddities filling the walls and corners. If you follow us for a while, you know we love quirky, so that is a good start.

Ale oto jesteśmy. Restauracja w środku przypomina stary, klimatyczny pub (kiedyś  to był pub!) z elementami ekscentrycznej księgarni lub antykwariatu dzięki różnym książkom, obrazom i innym bibelotom wypełniającym wszystkie ściany i zakamarki. A, że my kochamy taki styl, to wieczór zapowiada się dobrze.

We order our food (the menu is quite concise as opposed to the gin selection that goes on and on and on) and to fill in the waiting time they serve two types of bread with some butter. One bread is as black as the aforementioned rat. The colour is due to the black squid ink (and parmesan is added to it for a taste), and one was more ordinary but super tasty whole-wheat bread.

For a starter, Marcin takes venison tartare with nasturtium and shimeji mushrooms and I go for mussels with gnocchi. Both starters are really nice and so are the mains, lamb with artichoke for Marcin and steamed brill with king oyster mushrooms for me.

Zamawiamy nasze jedzenie (menu jest dość zwięzłe w przeciwieństwie do karty z ginem, która jest dłuższa niż Pan Tadeusz) i aby wypełnić czas oczekiwania, serwują nam dwa rodzaje chleba z masłem. Jeden chleb jest tak czarny jak wspomniany tytułowy szczur. Kolor zawdzięcza czarnemu atramentowi kałamarnicy (i dla smaku dodali do niego także parmezan), a jeden był bardziej zwyczajny, ale super smaczny z pełnoziarnistej mąki. Na przystawkę Marcin bierze tatar z dziczyzny z nasturcją i grzybami shimeji, ja wybieram małże z gnocchi. Obie przystawki są naprawdę smaczne, tak samo jak dania główne, jagnięcina z karczochami dla Marcina i skarp gotowany na parze z boczniakami królewskimi dla mnie.

We do not tend to shy away from puddings. My choice is somewhat unusual as I ignore chocolate and go for pistachio and olive oil cake with rhubarb, cheesecake and mascarpone sorbet. Try to beat it. However, Marcin makes up for my diversion and goes for my usual choice, ordering chocolate with porcini mushrooms, chestnut and filo pastry. And he loves it. But we share the deserts of course.

We had a really pleasant evening at the Black Rat, the atmosphere was nice, the staff was friendly, and the food was very decent, too.

Razem z Marcinem raczej nie należymy do osób stroniących od deserów. Mój dzisiejszy wybór jest nieco nietypowy, bo ignoruję czekoladę i wybieram ciasto pistacjowo-oliwkowe z rabarbarem, sernikiem i sorbetem mascarpone. Marcin naprawia jednak moje odstepstawa od normy zamawiając czekoladę z borowikami, kasztanami i ciastem filo. I jest potem zachwycony tym wyborem. Ale oczywiście dzielimy desery między sobą.

I tak spędziliśmy naprawdę przyjemny wieczór w Black Rat, atmosfera była miła, personel był przyjazny, a jedzenie było bardzo przyzwoite.
