Kinky Boots

We bought the tickets for Kinky Boots many months ago, but then my work trip to China was scheduled for dates that included the performance. Fortunately, we managed to exchange our tickets for an earlier performance. We only had to pay the difference in price for better seats. Well, no regrets!

There are musicals that entertain you for a couple of hours, and there are musicals that stay with you long after the curtain falls. Kinky Boots manages to do both.

What many people don't realise is that the story is rooted in real life. It was inspired by Steve Pateman, a Northamptonshire businessman who discovered an unusual niche – making women's boots in men's sizes for drag artists. His story became the 2005 British film, which was later transformed into the award-winning musical featuring music and lyrics by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

Set in the traditional Price & Son shoe factory in Northampton, the story follows Charlie Price, who unexpectedly inherits the struggling family business after his father's death. The factory is facing closure, and with it the livelihoods of the people Charlie has known since childhood is threatened. Everything changes when he meets Lola, a charismatic drag queen whose confidence, humour and honesty inspire Charlie to look at the business from a completely different perspective. Together they discover an untapped market and begin creating the famous "kinky boots"

On the surface, it is a story about saving a shoe factory. Underneath, it is about acceptance, identity and finding the courage to be yourself. Charlie's factory workers have never met anyone quite like Lola before, and their first reactions are not always welcoming. Watching those barriers slowly disappear is one of the most satisfying parts of the show. Despite tackling prejudice and difficult subjects, the musical never feels heavy. Instead, it delivers its message with warmth, humour and an incredible amount of sparkle.

The current production, directed by Nikolai Foster, is visually spectacular. As the curtain rises, the enormous stage of the London Coliseum reveals an impressively realistic factory floor, complete with workstations, industrial machinery and a towering iron staircase leading to the office overlooking the workers below. The contrast between this gritty industrial setting and the colourful world of drag works brilliantly throughout the performance.

The costumes deserve a standing ovation of their own. They are dazzling, extravagant and wonderfully over the top - exactly what you would hope for from a musical with "Kinky" in its title. Sequins, feathers, towering red boots and endless costume changes fill the stage with colour, while the vibrant lighting design makes every scene burst with energy.

The music is another highlight. Cyndi Lauper's score is packed with memorable songs, including The Land of LolaSex Is in the Heel and The Most Beautiful Thing, each perfectly capturing the emotion and excitement of the story.

Piosenki takie jak The Land of LolaSex Is in the Heel czy The Most Beautiful Thing doskonale oddają klimat spektaklu, a świetna choreografia i energia całego zespołu sprawiają, że trudno usiedzieć spokojnie w fotelu.

This production also features two familiar faces for British audiences. Johannes Radebe, best known from Strictly Come Dancing, makes an unforgettable West End debut as Lola, bringing incredible charisma, elegance and warmth to the role. Alongside him, former X Factor winner Matt Cardle takes on the role of Charlie Price.

Perhaps what makes Kinky Boots feel even more relevant today is its message. At a time when many members of the LGBTQ+ community still face prejudice and discrimination, this joyful celebration of inclusivity feels as important as ever. It reminds us that understanding often begins simply by listening to one another, and that our differences can become our greatest strengths.

Filled with fantastic music, stunning costumes, fierce choreography, killer heels and plenty of laughter, Kinky Boots is much more than a feel-good musical. It is an uplifting reminder that everyone deserves the chance to stand proud, be accepted and walk confidently in their own shoes.

P.S. Some of the images are from the programme book, as taking pictures during the show is not allowed.

W roli Loli występuje Johannes Radebe, doskonale znany brytyjskiej publiczności z programu Strictly Come Dancing. Partneruje mu zwycięzca programu The X Factor Matt Cardle jako Charlie Price.

Wszystko to podane z dużą dawką humoru, świetnej muzyki i widowiskowej oprawy.

P.S. Niektóre zdjęcia pochodzą z drukowanego programu, ponieważ fotografowanie podczas przedstawienia jest zabronione.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at the Riverside Studios

Here we are in the theatre again. Today it is our favourite kind of spectacle, immersion style. We are seeing The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, based on Douglas Adams’ iconic sci-fi comedy, and for the first time we find ourselves at Riverside Studios in London, Hammersmith.

I znowu jesteśmy w teatrze.

The story begins in an unusual pub setting, where we settle in with a drink of our choice thanks to our VIP tickets, and before we quite realise it, the actors blend in and start chatting with the audience. From that pub scene the performance expands into a series of interconnected spaces around the venue, and we move from room to room as the story unfolds. Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and a few others narrowly escape the destruction of Earth and hitch a ride on a passing spaceship, and we follow along. Along the way we meet the depressed yet wonderfully witty robot Marvin and join the quest to understand the mystery of Life, the Universe and Everything.

Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox i kilku innych bohaterów w ostatniej chwili uchodzą z życiem przed zagładą Ziemi i ruszają w kosmiczną podróż, w którą zostajemy wciągnięci razem z nimi.

The performance is a blend of immersive staging, musical elements, dance and theatrical spectacle, and it lasts about ninety minutes. You do not strictly need to be deeply familiar with Douglas Adams’ books or the film adaptation to enjoy the experience, but knowing the story definitely helps you enjoy it more. As we had VIP tickets, which perhaps were not strictly necessary but we have no regrets, we also received a deck of cards printed with illustrations inspired by the book and the play. We stayed for one more soft drink afterwards, and then it was time to head off for dinner.

Całość łączy w sobie elementy teatru immersyjnego, muzyki, ruchu i wizualnego rozmachu, a spektakl trwa około półtorej godziny.

Paranormal Activity

The Ambassadors Theatre is currently hosting “Paranormal Activity”. Written by Levi Holloway and directed by Felix Barrett of Punchdrunk, it follows a couple who begin to experience unsettling events after moving to London. I will not go into plot details to avoid spoilers, but the involvement of Felix Barrett alone was enough to convince us that this was something we should see.

So I got hold of tickets and off we went.

This was our first visit to the Ambassadors Theatre. Built in 1913, it is a Grade II listed building and relatively small by West End standards, seating around 400 to 440 people across two levels, with stalls at ground level and a single dress circle above. The modest size and intimate sightlines mean you are much closer to the actors and the action than in many larger theatres. We were seated downstairs, fairly close to the stage, which worked particularly well for this production.

The exterior is restrained and classical, with a stuccoed façade on West Street, pilasters, a deep cornice and a balustraded parapet. The building occupies a compact, almost triangular site.

Teatr Ambassadors wystawia obecnie „Paranormal Activity”.

Zdobyliśmy zatem bilety i ruszyliśmy do teatru.

Inside, the theatre is decorated in an elegant Louis XVI style, with a colour palette traditionally associated with Parma violet, ivory and gold. It feels quite refined. The foyer and public areas feature decorative plasterwork and pilasters, with a pleasing circular space that leads into the auditorium.

We arrived quite early and had a drink. As the bar area is very small, and the auditorium had not yet opened, we waited in the corridor, sitting on the floor and using the time to unwind a little before being let in to find our seats.

Wnętrze zaskakuje eleganckim wystrojem w stylu Ludwika XVI, z paletą kolorów, w której dominuje fiolet, kość słoniowa i złoto. Całość jest dość wyrafinowana. Przestrzenie foyer mają dekoracyjne sztukaterie i przyjemny, półkolisty układ prowadzący do widowni.

The play itself is highly atmospheric and genuinely unsettling without tipping into tackiness. The tone is creeping and tense, often very quiet, until it suddenly is not. The set represents a London home, shown as a cross-section over two floors, like a doll-house with one wall removed. Sound design, darkness and practical stage effects are used extensively, with some moments that feel closer to stage magic than conventional theatre, and which we are still trying to work out.

Silence is used deliberately and effectively, to the point where you can hear the audience holding its breath or reacting audibly. Modern horror does not often manage to sustain this level of unease, but this production does.

To sum it up, we liked it a great deal.

Spirited Away

Another studio Ghibli’s anime, Oscar-winning Spirited Away, created by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, has been reimagined for the stage. Directed by John Caird (known for Les Miserables), this breath-taking production is performed in Japanese (but with subtitles,) and accompanied by a live orchestra. Each night, the Coliseum fills to the brim, leaving audiences in awe.

Kolejna anmiacja studia Ghibli, nagrodzone Oscarem Spirited Away autorstwa legendarnego Hayao Miyazaki, zostało przystosowane do potrzeb teatralnej sceny.

The visuals are stunning, and the performance is exceptional. If you haven't seen the film yet (I highly recommend watching it ASAP!), Spirited Away tells the story of Chihiro, a young girl who accidentally enters a world of spirits. Her parents are transformed into pigs, and Chihiro must navigate this enchanting but perilous realm, ruled by the sorceress Yubaba, to save her parents and find a way back to the human world. I’ll leave the plot here, to not spoil your fun.

Efekty wizualne są oszałamiające, a gra aktorska też znakomita. Jeśli jeszcze nie widzieliście filmu (gorąco polecam obejrzeć go jak najszybciej!), Spirited Away opowiada historię Chihiro, dziewczynki, która przypadkowo trafia do świata duchów. Jej rodzice zostają zamienieni w świnie, a Chihiro ich uratować i znaleźć drogę powrotną do świata ludzi. Więcej fabuły nie zdradzę, aby nie zepsuć wam zabawy.

In March, we attended another Studio Ghibli production—My Neighbor Totoro (check out my March blog entry for that!). It's hard not to compare the two, and while both are incredible, I have to give a slight edge to Totoro. There’s just something magical about Jim Henson's puppets and the unique storytelling in Totoro. That said, Spirited Away was still absolutely fantastic! My favorite characters were No Face and Haku, and my favourite scene was the one inside the train – so powerfully imagined.

W marcu obejrzeliśmy inną produkcję Studio Ghibli — My Neighbor Totoro (sprawdźcie wpis na blogu z marca!).

As is typical, recording was not allowed during the performance, so this entry includes a few mobile snaps from before and after the show, as well as glimpses from the program. Plus, I cannot resist sharing a photo of the sushi we enjoyed during our pre-show lunch in the theatre.

Totoro

Tonight, we jumped on the train to London again to watch a theatrical rendition of "My Neighbor Totoro” in the Barbican Centre.

“My Neighbour Totoro” is The Royal Shakespeare Company's acclaimed production of the well-known and cherished Studio Ghibli animated movie. The play won six Olivier Awards, including Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, and led the nominations for the 2023 WhatsOnStage Awards, earning nine of them. In addition, the show picked up Olivier wins in categories for the Best Set Design, Best Costume and Best Lighting, showcasing the incredible talent behind this spectacle. It is praised as “theatre at its most magical” by London Theatre (and rightly so!). It is an enchanting coming-of-age story that follows the adventures of sisters Satsuki and Mei over one extraordinary summer. With the guidance of the gentle and protective forest spirit (Totoro himself), they embark on a journey that celebrates the magical fantasy world of childhood and the transformative power of imagination.

Performed on the Barbican's iconic stage, the show returned last Autumn after breaking records in 2022. The tickets sold out as hot buns on a cold winter morning, but we were swift enough to secure good seats for ourselves (making the bank account tear a little, perhaps).

Dziś wieczorem ponownie wskoczyliśmy do pociągu do Londynu, aby obejrzeć teatralną wersję „My Neighbour Totoro” w Barbican Centre. Totoro to urzekająca opowieść o dorastaniu, przedstawiająca przygody sióstr Satsuki i Mei podczas jednego niezwykłego lata.

As the curtain went up, we were transported into the heart of rural Japan, brought to life through very imaginative set design and intricate puppetry (the puppets were made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop!) The cast features a diverse group of performers, including Jessie Baek, Jasmine Bayes, and Ka Long Kelvin Chan. The actors were fantastic, the puppeteers were doing magic, and the live music added greatly to the atmosphere. There was a great sense of humour in the play and the “mistakes” puppeteers made were hilarious. The set is noted for its mobility, resembling origami, and uses a central revolve to create a very dynamic environment. We were taken to different parts of Mei and Satsuki’s house, the hospital, where their mother was, corn fields, the forest, Totoro’s tree, the sky above the area and other places, as the settings were changing smoothly but quickly, leaving us in awe of the creative solutions applied.

We were kindly asked to refrain from taking pictures of the stage so here are just some moments from before, between and after, as well as some programme pictures.
