Kinky Boots

We bought the tickets for Kinky Boots many months ago, but then my work trip to China was scheduled for dates that included the performance. Fortunately, we managed to exchange our tickets for an earlier performance. We only had to pay the difference in price for better seats. Well, no regrets!

There are musicals that entertain you for a couple of hours, and there are musicals that stay with you long after the curtain falls. Kinky Boots manages to do both.

What many people don't realise is that the story is rooted in real life. It was inspired by Steve Pateman, a Northamptonshire businessman who discovered an unusual niche – making women's boots in men's sizes for drag artists. His story became the 2005 British film, which was later transformed into the award-winning musical featuring music and lyrics by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

Set in the traditional Price & Son shoe factory in Northampton, the story follows Charlie Price, who unexpectedly inherits the struggling family business after his father's death. The factory is facing closure, and with it the livelihoods of the people Charlie has known since childhood is threatened. Everything changes when he meets Lola, a charismatic drag queen whose confidence, humour and honesty inspire Charlie to look at the business from a completely different perspective. Together they discover an untapped market and begin creating the famous "kinky boots"

On the surface, it is a story about saving a shoe factory. Underneath, it is about acceptance, identity and finding the courage to be yourself. Charlie's factory workers have never met anyone quite like Lola before, and their first reactions are not always welcoming. Watching those barriers slowly disappear is one of the most satisfying parts of the show. Despite tackling prejudice and difficult subjects, the musical never feels heavy. Instead, it delivers its message with warmth, humour and an incredible amount of sparkle.

The current production, directed by Nikolai Foster, is visually spectacular. As the curtain rises, the enormous stage of the London Coliseum reveals an impressively realistic factory floor, complete with workstations, industrial machinery and a towering iron staircase leading to the office overlooking the workers below. The contrast between this gritty industrial setting and the colourful world of drag works brilliantly throughout the performance.

The costumes deserve a standing ovation of their own. They are dazzling, extravagant and wonderfully over the top - exactly what you would hope for from a musical with "Kinky" in its title. Sequins, feathers, towering red boots and endless costume changes fill the stage with colour, while the vibrant lighting design makes every scene burst with energy.

The music is another highlight. Cyndi Lauper's score is packed with memorable songs, including The Land of LolaSex Is in the Heel and The Most Beautiful Thing, each perfectly capturing the emotion and excitement of the story.

Piosenki takie jak The Land of LolaSex Is in the Heel czy The Most Beautiful Thing doskonale oddają klimat spektaklu, a świetna choreografia i energia całego zespołu sprawiają, że trudno usiedzieć spokojnie w fotelu.

This production also features two familiar faces for British audiences. Johannes Radebe, best known from Strictly Come Dancing, makes an unforgettable West End debut as Lola, bringing incredible charisma, elegance and warmth to the role. Alongside him, former X Factor winner Matt Cardle takes on the role of Charlie Price.

Perhaps what makes Kinky Boots feel even more relevant today is its message. At a time when many members of the LGBTQ+ community still face prejudice and discrimination, this joyful celebration of inclusivity feels as important as ever. It reminds us that understanding often begins simply by listening to one another, and that our differences can become our greatest strengths.

Filled with fantastic music, stunning costumes, fierce choreography, killer heels and plenty of laughter, Kinky Boots is much more than a feel-good musical. It is an uplifting reminder that everyone deserves the chance to stand proud, be accepted and walk confidently in their own shoes.

P.S. Some of the images are from the programme book, as taking pictures during the show is not allowed.

W roli Loli występuje Johannes Radebe, doskonale znany brytyjskiej publiczności z programu Strictly Come Dancing. Partneruje mu zwycięzca programu The X Factor Matt Cardle jako Charlie Price.

Wszystko to podane z dużą dawką humoru, świetnej muzyki i widowiskowej oprawy.

P.S. Niektóre zdjęcia pochodzą z drukowanego programu, ponieważ fotografowanie podczas przedstawienia jest zabronione.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at the Riverside Studios

Here we are in the theatre again. Today it is our favourite kind of spectacle, immersion style. We are seeing The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, based on Douglas Adams’ iconic sci-fi comedy, and for the first time we find ourselves at Riverside Studios in London, Hammersmith.

I znowu jesteśmy w teatrze.

The story begins in an unusual pub setting, where we settle in with a drink of our choice thanks to our VIP tickets, and before we quite realise it, the actors blend in and start chatting with the audience. From that pub scene the performance expands into a series of interconnected spaces around the venue, and we move from room to room as the story unfolds. Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and a few others narrowly escape the destruction of Earth and hitch a ride on a passing spaceship, and we follow along. Along the way we meet the depressed yet wonderfully witty robot Marvin and join the quest to understand the mystery of Life, the Universe and Everything.

Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox i kilku innych bohaterów w ostatniej chwili uchodzą z życiem przed zagładą Ziemi i ruszają w kosmiczną podróż, w którą zostajemy wciągnięci razem z nimi.

The performance is a blend of immersive staging, musical elements, dance and theatrical spectacle, and it lasts about ninety minutes. You do not strictly need to be deeply familiar with Douglas Adams’ books or the film adaptation to enjoy the experience, but knowing the story definitely helps you enjoy it more. As we had VIP tickets, which perhaps were not strictly necessary but we have no regrets, we also received a deck of cards printed with illustrations inspired by the book and the play. We stayed for one more soft drink afterwards, and then it was time to head off for dinner.

Całość łączy w sobie elementy teatru immersyjnego, muzyki, ruchu i wizualnego rozmachu, a spektakl trwa około półtorej godziny.

Wahaca Covent Garden

As always, a visit to London means food. On the way to the theatre, we briefly stop at the Southbank Centre Food Market after noticing a Polish stand selling grilled sausages. We very rarely eat sausages these days, but the pull of nostalgia was strong.

After the spectacle, we have dinner booked at Wahaca, a colourful, casual Mexican restaurant serving tacos, small plates, and quesadillas, with a lively, buzzy vibe right in the heart of the West End. It is actually the original Wahaca location, where the whole chain began back in 2007, inspired by the street food markets of Mexico. Btw, these Mexican eateries are the brainchild of Thomasina Miers, who won MasterChef in 2005.

We spot it easily thanks to the bold, colourful display in the front window, filled with papier-mâché decorations and floral elements, and step down into the restaurant. The interior aims to evoke Mexico’s lively street markets and urban hangouts rather than a formal dining room. We are welcomed by bright colours, relaxed seating and a touch of industrial chic. The place is crowded, and we wait in line for a few minutes before getting our table. Without a reservation, they would likely have sent us away. From this moment on, though, everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

Łatwo ją zauważyć dzięki odważnej, kolorowej witrynie pełnej figure z papier-mâché, kwiatowych dekoracji i ozdób.

The menu offers a variety of fresh, street-food style Mexican dishes. Do not confuse it with the heavy, cheesy plates common in Tex-Mex, but instead think soft corn tortillas, smoky grilled flavours and fresh salsas. We immediately know what we want, even though many options are tempting. The Sunshine Bowls call our names. They are vibrant bowls of 30 plants, with avocado, corn, spinach, quinoa, black beans and a coconut and lime dressing. I choose grilled chicken, while Marcin goes for halloumi. They look beautiful and taste even better. I also order a Three Citrus Fizz, pink grapefruit, lime and lemon served sparkling over ice, while Marcin opts for a margarita and Lucky Saint.

To kolorowe miski pełne aż 30 roślin, z awokado, kukurydzą, szpinakiem, komosą ryżową, czarną fasolą i kokosowo-limonkowym dressingiem. Ja wybieram wersję z grillowanym kurczakiem, a Marcin z halloumi. Wyglądają pięknie i smakują jeszcze lepiej.

For dessert, we decide on the Warm Chocolate and Pecan Cake, a dense, moist cake featuring toasted sesame and ancho sugar, served with a unique, very slightly alcoholic whipped tequila cream, Earl Grey tea and coffee. I am officially a fan of Wahaca after this first visit. It was so good that I now want to visit all the Wahacas.

Na deser wybieramy ciepłe ciasto czekoladowo-pekanowe, gęste i wilgotne, z dodatkiem prażonego sezamu i cukru ancho, podawane z wyjątkowym, lekko alkoholowym kremem z tequilą.

Banksy Limitless - additions

The final section of the exhibition was the Underground Immersive Experience. One highlight was a pair of Puma trainers displayed in a glass case, specially designed for Banksy’s Turf War exhibition. There was also a reconstruction of the Grim Reaper riding a Dodgem, inspired by the infamous Dismaland event. Through a door marked Atelier, we entered a small room. Inside, a figure sat at a desk, cutting out stencils, while a semi-transparent screen between this figure and us displayed some moving pictures. The projection told a story about Banksy and included some of his most famous quotes. To be honest, this section was less impressive than the others and only took a few minutes to explore.

Ostatnia część wystawy to Underground Immersive Experience. Jednym z głównych punktów były tu buty Puma wystawione w szklanej gablocie, specjalnie zaprojektowane na potrzeby wystawy Banksy’ego Turf War.

The spray-painting experience was also included with our tickets. We each received a t-shirt in our chosen size and had the chance to create our own stencil-style design inspired by Banksy. We did this activity first, then left our creations to dry before taking them home as a unique memento of the exhibition.

Banksy Limitless part 2

Passing the famous Meat Truck, we enter a replica of a London Underground platform - Prankadilly Circus. The walls are tiled, the recorded rush of trains hums, and posters line the platform: Trolley Hunters, The English Maid, and others. We walk through a space where Banksy’s art once existed illegally, but here it is safe, ticketed, and curated.

Mijając słynną Ciężarówkę z Mięsem, wchodzimy na replikę peronu londyńskiego metra – Prankadilly Circus. Ściany wyłożone są kafelkami, w tle dudni nagrany szum przejeżdżających pociągów, a peron zdobią plakaty: Trolley Hunters, The English Maid i inne.

As we leave the station behind, daylight floods the next vast white hall, ornamented by the skeletal base of a Ferris wheel, its empty spokes clawing skyward. A glass-painted replica of Girl with Balloon floats above our heads, her red heart-shaped balloon suspended mid-air. Around the edges, provocations resurface: a crushed red telephone box, Kate Moss rendered in Warhol’s pop palette, and £10 banknotes printed with Princess Diana’s face.

A corner dedicated to Banksy’s view on immigration presents a famous drawings of anti-immigration birds alongside a boat overloaded with refugees, stark and sobering.

Opposite a riot helmet made of disco-ball crystals as a small but potent symbol. It fuses two worlds: authority, law enforcement, state control, and threat of violence in helmet form, contrasted with mirrored crystals evoking spectacle and entertainment. Named Met Ball, it wittily references one of the most exclusive celebrity events, turning oppression into spectacle. Surrounding it, the walls are covered with posters from past Banksy exhibitions, while Forgive Us Our Trespassing and Stop Me Before I Paint Again occupy their niches - a dialogue about guilt, rebellion, and the tension between legality and artistry. For me, this corner encapsulates Banksy himself: a constant insurgent navigating authority and spectacle, rebellion and recognition, always just beyond the reach of control.

Po przeciwnej stronie hełm policyjny wykonany z lśniących kryształów dyskotekowej kuli - niewielki, lecz wymowny symbol. Łączy dwa światy: świat autorytetu, egzekwowania prawa, kontroli państwa i groźby przemocy zaklętej w formie hełmu, zestawiony jest z lustrzanymi kryształami przywołującymi widowisko i rozrywkę. Nazwany Met Ball, sprytnie nawiązuje do jednego z najbardziej ekskluzywnych wydarzeń celebryckich, zamieniając opresję w spektakl.

The final installation is the Infinity Room. Mirrors extend in every direction, multiplying visitors into many reflections. Fragments of Banksy’s imagery start to flicker around: the girl with her balloon, a rat with a brush, slogans half-familiar and half-erased. The exhibition is about Banksy - but it is also about you. It has been so from the start, but now it is spelled out explicitly: reflections fold in on themselves until you are both spectator and spectacle, the protest and the product. Every wall you passed, every image photographed, every plaque read ask: Who are you? Where are you in the grand scheme of things? Rebellious or complacent? Repressed or repressing? Blissfully ignorant or painfully aware? Or maybe all of it?

Then we exit through the gift shop, of course… past T-shirts bearing faces of defiance. And for a moment, the whole experience feels like a trap you willingly stepped into. And it makes you think all over again…

I zmusza cię to, byś jeszcze raz wszystko przemyślał…
