Kinky Boots

We bought the tickets for Kinky Boots many months ago, but then my work trip to China was scheduled for dates that included the performance. Fortunately, we managed to exchange our tickets for an earlier performance. We only had to pay the difference in price for better seats. Well, no regrets!

There are musicals that entertain you for a couple of hours, and there are musicals that stay with you long after the curtain falls. Kinky Boots manages to do both.

What many people don't realise is that the story is rooted in real life. It was inspired by Steve Pateman, a Northamptonshire businessman who discovered an unusual niche – making women's boots in men's sizes for drag artists. His story became the 2005 British film, which was later transformed into the award-winning musical featuring music and lyrics by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

Set in the traditional Price & Son shoe factory in Northampton, the story follows Charlie Price, who unexpectedly inherits the struggling family business after his father's death. The factory is facing closure, and with it the livelihoods of the people Charlie has known since childhood is threatened. Everything changes when he meets Lola, a charismatic drag queen whose confidence, humour and honesty inspire Charlie to look at the business from a completely different perspective. Together they discover an untapped market and begin creating the famous "kinky boots"

On the surface, it is a story about saving a shoe factory. Underneath, it is about acceptance, identity and finding the courage to be yourself. Charlie's factory workers have never met anyone quite like Lola before, and their first reactions are not always welcoming. Watching those barriers slowly disappear is one of the most satisfying parts of the show. Despite tackling prejudice and difficult subjects, the musical never feels heavy. Instead, it delivers its message with warmth, humour and an incredible amount of sparkle.

The current production, directed by Nikolai Foster, is visually spectacular. As the curtain rises, the enormous stage of the London Coliseum reveals an impressively realistic factory floor, complete with workstations, industrial machinery and a towering iron staircase leading to the office overlooking the workers below. The contrast between this gritty industrial setting and the colourful world of drag works brilliantly throughout the performance.

The costumes deserve a standing ovation of their own. They are dazzling, extravagant and wonderfully over the top - exactly what you would hope for from a musical with "Kinky" in its title. Sequins, feathers, towering red boots and endless costume changes fill the stage with colour, while the vibrant lighting design makes every scene burst with energy.

The music is another highlight. Cyndi Lauper's score is packed with memorable songs, including The Land of LolaSex Is in the Heel and The Most Beautiful Thing, each perfectly capturing the emotion and excitement of the story.

Piosenki takie jak The Land of LolaSex Is in the Heel czy The Most Beautiful Thing doskonale oddają klimat spektaklu, a świetna choreografia i energia całego zespołu sprawiają, że trudno usiedzieć spokojnie w fotelu.

This production also features two familiar faces for British audiences. Johannes Radebe, best known from Strictly Come Dancing, makes an unforgettable West End debut as Lola, bringing incredible charisma, elegance and warmth to the role. Alongside him, former X Factor winner Matt Cardle takes on the role of Charlie Price.

Perhaps what makes Kinky Boots feel even more relevant today is its message. At a time when many members of the LGBTQ+ community still face prejudice and discrimination, this joyful celebration of inclusivity feels as important as ever. It reminds us that understanding often begins simply by listening to one another, and that our differences can become our greatest strengths.

Filled with fantastic music, stunning costumes, fierce choreography, killer heels and plenty of laughter, Kinky Boots is much more than a feel-good musical. It is an uplifting reminder that everyone deserves the chance to stand proud, be accepted and walk confidently in their own shoes.

P.S. Some of the images are from the programme book, as taking pictures during the show is not allowed.

W roli Loli występuje Johannes Radebe, doskonale znany brytyjskiej publiczności z programu Strictly Come Dancing. Partneruje mu zwycięzca programu The X Factor Matt Cardle jako Charlie Price.

Wszystko to podane z dużą dawką humoru, świetnej muzyki i widowiskowej oprawy.

P.S. Niektóre zdjęcia pochodzą z drukowanego programu, ponieważ fotografowanie podczas przedstawienia jest zabronione.

Belgravia in Bloom 2025

It is that time of year again! So, we are off to see “London in bloom”. The theme of the Belgravia festivl this year is “Through the Seasons.” We kicked things off with a breakfast treat, but I will save that for a separate entry.

In my head, Belgravia in Bloom always starts at Peggy Porschen, and this year they are as whimsical as ever. Even from afar, you can see a beautifully lush archway featuring dense clusters of pink, cream, and deep magenta blooms. Their take on this year's theme was inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

To znowu czas festiwalu „London in bloom” Tematem przewodnim tegorocznego festiwalu w Belgravii jest „“Through the Seasons”(„Przez pory roku”).

The TomTom Coffee House, which sits just opposite Peggy, opted for what I can only call "aggressive pastels." Lush bunches of blue, yellow, pink, and red flowers arch around the main entrance, playfully adorned with little owls, pumpkins, butterflies, and bees.

On the opposite side, the Lime Tree Hotel is also beautifully decorated with a half-arch made of rustic tree branches and colourful flowers.

Eccleston Yards is relatively modest this year, adorned only with a few oversized flowers and some flowery armchairs including an interactive floral swing chair.

Nad głównym wejściem pyszni się obfita girlanda niebieskich, żółtych, różowych i czerwonych kwiatów, ozdobiona dodatkowo figurkami małych sówek, dyń, motyli i pszczół.

Udekorowano go kilkoma wielkimi kwiatami i kwiecistymi fotelami (w tym dużą huśtawką).

But it is in front of the Parson’s Nose butchers where we find the "Crowned by Nature" installation by Neill Strain Floral Couture: a massive, three-dimensional, larger-than-life sculpted head of Mother Nature. The face and facial features are meticulously crafted using tightly packed green moss, live plants, and textured grasses to create incredibly realistic shadows, depth, and contours. Her cascading hair and crown are woven from a massive gradient of seasonal flowers.

To ogromna, trójwymiarowa twarz Matki Natury. Rysy twarzy zostały pieczołowicie wyprofilowane z gęstego, zielonego mchu, żywych roślin i ozdobnych traw, co tworzy niesamowicie realistyczne cienie, głębię i fakturę. Jej kaskadowe włosy i korona zrobione są z sezonowych kwiatów.

A vibrant floral arch curves over the Pepa London entrance; colour-wise, it is easily one of my favorite compositions on the trail.

Meanwhile, in front of Papouelli, there is a large, sunflower-themed installation featuring children's mannequins playing among the blooms. For some reason, it feels just a tad spooky to me!

Trochę mi one przypominają jakieś ufo-ki i z jakichś powodów ta instalacja trąci wg mnie nutką horroru.

The Moyses Stevens flower shop naturally boasts a stunning floral arch at its entrance, and several other boutiques nearby are surrounded by beautiful displays - we especially liked Beulah and Walden Chymist.

Les Senteurs perfumery also stands out with a whimsical white teapot pouring a colourful, floral brew right into a white teacup.

The main showcase by Moyses Stevens, however, is "The Butterfly Calendar" on Elizabeth Street.

We then headed towards Chelsea, resting for a brief moment in the Horatio’s Garden and admiring some of the most beautifully adorned shop windows along the way.

Oh, and I spotted a gorgeous watering can shaped like a white cat! Sadly, it was a bit too expensive to justify the purchase. At least I took a picture.

Thruxton

Today is the day Marcin finally decides to use his birthday present - tickets to Thruxton Circuit - so we set off early in the morning to arrive on time. The weather could be better, but at least it doesn’t really rain (much). But it is cold!

As expected, the day starts with a safety briefing. It’s more useful than exciting, but necessary. Drivers are introduced to the layout of the circuit, which is not immediately intuitive at speed, and are talked through braking points, turn-in, and positioning. Without that guidance, it would be very easy to misjudge corners, especially given how fast the track is. After that, we split - Marcin heads to the cars, and I make my way to the observation tower.

The first session is in the Alpine A110S. Marcin drives with an instructor in the passenger seat, who evaluates his performance and provides feedback on technique. The idea is not just to drive fast, but to understand how to improve. They complete a few laps while I try to take photos, which turns out to be harder than expected - at that speed, it’s difficult to even recognise the car, let alone get a sharp shot.

A driving experience at Thruxton is often marketed as a chance to drive high-performance cars, but what stands out is the circuit itself. As the fastest track in the UK, it is not particularly tight or technical. Instead, it is fast and flowing, with long corners where maintaining speed matters more than heavy braking. It may look like it’s all about adrenaline, but in practice it is more about controlled exposure to performance driving.

In the second part, Marcin is in the car alone. And time he is in a Formula 1 racing car. The car is very low to the ground, flat, and compact, with a surprisingly small seating area and a very stripped-back feel. Compared to the Alpine, it feels much more direct and exposed. Driving two such different cars on the same circuit makes it easier to understand how vehicle design affects handling and speed. Marcin makes a few laps but he appears and disappears around the track so quickly that again, I won’t take full responsibility for the quality of the photos.

W porównaniu do Alpine, prowadzenie go jest znacznie bardziej bezpośrednie i odsłonięte – czuć każdy ruch kierownicą i reakcję auta.

The final part involves both of us as passengers. We join an ARDS-qualified instructor for a high-speed lap in a Toyota Corolla. And when I say high speed, I mean it. It is the moment where I can feel what the circuit - and the car - can do when pushed. A little bit nauseous to be honest…

Ostatnia część to nasza wspólna jazda pasażerska.

Battersea Light Festival strikes again

It is that time of year again: the Battersea Light Festival is on, and we cannot miss it.

The first installation we see is right in front of the entrance at Malaysia Square. It is Atlas by Jon Voss — a large sculpture inspired by the myth of Atlas, the figure who bears the weight of the world on his shoulders. Here, the myth is reinterpreted with a mechanical, cyborg twist. It feels very futuristic, combining industrial aesthetics with luminous elements, and it immediately makes us think of Howl’s Moving Castle. Atlas is not meant to reference it directly, but it lives in the same emotional and visual neighbourhood: mythic, mechanical, a little weary, a little magical. We fall in love with this installation straight away.

We then head inside to Turbine Hall A, where we find a bespoke installation created exclusively for the festival and inspired by the aurora borealis. It is Aurora by James Glancy Design. Reflective tapes and strings of light form a structure that mimics the feeling of northern skies, playing with gradients and movement to evoke an atmospheric, immersive experience.

Wchodzimy do środka i idziemy do Turbine Hall A, gdzie czeka instalacja stworzona specjalnie na potrzeby festiwalu i inspirowana zorzą polarną. To Aurora stworzona przez James Glancy Design. Odbijające światło taśmy i świetlne nici układają się w formę przywołującą północne niebo, bawiąc się gradientami i ruchem. Efekt jest niezwykle atmosferyczny i wciągający.

Turbine Hall B features Spider by Groupe LAPS. This installation is made up of 80 smaller illuminated spiders that combine into a larger form over two metres wide. We also pause in front of a nearby gallery to admire some wonderfully wild paintings of jungle animals. After passing a Valentine’s Day–themed display and snapping a quick photo, we head back out.

Mijamy walentynkową aranżację, robimy szybkie zdjęcie i wychodzimy z budynku.

The light is slowly fading, but it is still a little too bright to visit the main installation. So we retrace our steps and discover Never Ends by Luigi Console and Valentina Novembre. This interactive installation features a horse on a spring. As the horse moves, lights around the structure activate, bathing the scene in colour and motion. You need a bit of balance to ride it, and trying it out is a truly delightful experience.

Wracamy więc kawałek, żeby znaleźć Never Ends autorstwa Luigiego Console i Valentiny Novembre.

Next is Tornado by UxU Studio, a striking sculpture depicting a twisting vortex of metal and light.

Kolejna instalacja to Tornado studia UxU - efektowna rzeźba przedstawiająca skręcony wir metalu i światła.

And then we enter the Powerhouse once again, grab some ice cream, and exit through the riverside entrance. Here we find In Bloom by Kumquat Lab - an interactive light sculpture inspired by plant pollination. It features ten luminous spheres representing flowers. As you pass your hand in front of a sphere, the installation responds with changes in light and sound.

Tam czeka In Bloom autorstwa Kumquat Lab -  interaktywna instalacja inspirowana zapylaniem roślin. Składa się z dziesięciu świetlnych kul symbolizujących kwiaty. Gdy przesuwasz dłoń przed jedną z nich, instalacja reaguje światłem i dźwiękiem.

Possibly the most important installation of the festival, Parabolic Lightcloud by Amigo & Amigo consists of over 1,000 individual lights, carefully choreographed through colour and pattern transitions. Different lighting sequences create distinct atmospheric impressions.

From here, we move on to the final installation: Spin Me a Yarn by Studio Vertigo - a giant illuminated ball of yarn. It glows in red, bringing the evening to a perfect close. We are cold, and hungry, and it is time for dinner.

Na sam koniec odwiedzamy Spin Me a Yarn studia Vertigo - ogromny, podświetlony kłębek wełny.

Whales Beneath the Vaulted Ceiling

Last night, we stepped into a truly unforgettable world inside Winchester Cathedral—one filled with deep blue light, haunting music, and… whales.

Yes, whales. Three monumental sperm whale sculptures, suspended from the nave of the ancient cathedral, seemed to float through the air above us. The largest measured over five meters long. Created by artist Tessa Campbell Fraser, these breathtaking sculptures formed the centrepiece of an immersive exhibition that blends art, science, and awe.

We were there for a special event hosted by the University of Southampton—an evening of talks, performances, and reflection titled Whales: A Journey Through Worlds. It explored the incredible ways whales shape not just the ocean, but our entire planet, our laws, and even our imaginations.

Three standout talks anchored the night:

  • Professor Jon Copley shared astonishing insights about deep-sea ecosystems that form around whale carcasses, turning death into life for countless ocean creatures.

  • Dr Ryan Reisinger spoke about whale migrations and how these giants connect oceans across the globe, influencing ecosystems and even human life.

  • Dr Dina Lupin took us into the world of environmental law, revealing how whales are reshaping legal thinking about nature and rights.

And between the lectures, the evening flowed with poetry and live music.
