Orchid festival

Today we are visiting Kew Gardens for the Orchid Festival. It is held inside the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens - a remarkable multi climate glasshouse that allows visitors to move through different environments within a single space.

Dziś odwiedzamy Kew Gardens z okazji Festiwalu Orchidei. Festiwal odbywa się w oranżerii „Princess of Wales Conservatory” – imponującym obiekcie szklarniowym, w którym w jednym miejscu można zobaczyć rośliny z różnych stref klimatycznych.

Sir David Attenborough buried a time capsule in the foundations of the Princess of Wales Conservatory in 1985 while it was under construction. The capsule contains seeds of important food crops and several endangered plant species. It is intended to be opened in 2085, at a time when some of those plants may have become rare or extinct.

W 1985 roku, podczas budowy oranżerii, sir David Attenborough złożył w jej fundamentach kapsułę czasu. Umieszczono w niej nasiona ważnych roślin uprawnych oraz kilku gatunków zagrożonych wyginięciem. Kapsuła ma zostać otwarta w 2085 roku, gdy część z tych roślin może być już bardzo rzadka lub nawet nieobecna w środowisku naturalnym.

This year the festival focuses on Cameroon, celebrating the biodiversity and natural beauty of this country. The displays explore Cameroon’s varied landscapes, plants and wildlife through large horticultural installations and thousands of orchids.

Tegoroczna edycja festiwalu poświęcona jest Kamerunowi i podkreśla bogactwo przyrodnicze oraz różnorodność krajobrazów tego kraju. Ekspozycje nawiązują do lokalnej flory i fauny poprzez rozbudowane instalacje roślinne oraz tysiące orchidei.

Expert horticulturalists have created larger-than-life plant sculptures from living plants and colourful orchids, including towering giraffes, gorillas, roaring lions and hippos.

Doświadczeni ogrodnicy przygotowali efektowne, wielkoformatowe kompozycje z żywych roślin i barwnych storczyków, przedstawiające między innymi żyrafy, goryle, lwy oraz hipopotamy.

There are thousands of orchids on display, most of them robust hybrids well suited to exhibition. Colourful phalaenopsis and cymbidiums are arranged into sweeping arches and sculptural forms. Vandas and other tropical genera add further accent and variety to the display.

Na wystawie można zobaczyć tysiące orchidei, w większości gatunków dobrze przystosowanych do prezentacji w warunkach szklarniowych. Kolorowe falenopsisy i cymbidia tworzą rozległe łuki oraz przestrzenne kompozycje. Wandy i inne tropikalne rośliny stanowią uzupełnienie ekspozycji, wprowadzając dodatkową różnorodność form i barw.

The sea of bluebells

We have just realised it is a season for bluebells. And we also started to learn (by trials and errors method, obviously) how to make proper reels on Instagram. Thus, we have decided to combine two things and drive to the woods belonging to the Hinton Ampner. I am a bit tired, to be honest; this week was tough at work, and we are not yet completely recovered from COVID. But the weather is lovely, and we have never visited Hinton Ampner before. The house is closed today, but we stroll around the gardens and then take a walk to the woods, and there we encounter a proper violet sea of bluebells. It must be just the perfect time as they bloom in abundance. It took us quite a few hours to take pictures and record all the clips we wanted, but it was big fun. My feet are hurting now, and I am so exhausted I will sleep like a baby tonight. See below what we have experienced today (some of the images are just mobile phone snaps).

Właśnie zdaliśmy sobie sprawę, że to sezon na dzwonki. Zaczęliśmy też uczyć się (oczywiście metodą prób i błędów), jak robić właściwe szpule na Instagramie. Postanowiliśmy zatem połączyć te dwie rzeczy i udaliśmy się do lasów należących do Hinton Ampner. Szczerze mówiąc, jestem dzisiaj trochę zmęczona; ten tydzień był ciężki w pracy, a my nie doszliśmy jeszcze całkiem do siebie po COVIDzie. Ale pogoda jest piękna, a my nigdy wcześniej nie odwiedziliśmy Hinton Ampner, więc nie ma co gnuśnieć w domu. Sam dworek jest dziś zamknięty, ale spacerujemy po ogrodach, a potem idziemy trasa przez należące do posesji lasy i tam napotykamy prawdziwe fiolotowe morze dzwonków. Musieliśmy trafić w idealny czas, kiedy kwitną one najobficiej. Kilka godzin zajęło nam zrobienie zdjęć i nagranie wszystkich klipów, które chcieliśmy nagrać, ale zabawa była przednia. Bolą mnie teraz stopy i jestem tak wyczerpana, że będę dziś spać jak niemolak. W galerii jak zawsze podsumowanie, czego doświadczyliśmy (niektóre obrazy to tylko zdjęcia z telefonu komórkowego, więc jakość trochę ograniczona).

The Vyne - first visit

After the visit to Hampton Court last summer, it only makes sense to call on The Vyne, a Tudor mansion built in the XVI century for Lord Sandys, Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain (which later passed into the hands of the Chute family for about 300 years). Lord Sandys was remaining is a good grace of the King Henry the VIII, who even visited the Vyne three times, including a visit with his wife Katherine of Aragon and later with his back then mistress, Anne Boleyn.

The Vyne is located not far from Basingstoke, and it is a Grade I listed building.

Po wizycie w Hampton Court porzedniego lata nie ma chyba innej opcji, niż odwiedzić the Vyne, rezydencję Tudorów zbudowaną w XVI wieku dla lorda Sandysa, lorda szambelana Henryka VIII (rezydencja ta później przeszła w ręce rodziny Chute na około 300 lat). Lord Sandys pozostał w dobrych łaskach króla Henryka VIII, który nawet trzykrotnie odwiedził the Vyne, w tym jedna wizyta była z żoną Katarzyną Aragońską, a jedna z wówczas jeszcze kochanką, Anną Boleyn.

The Vyne znajduje się niedaleko Basingstoke i jest zabytkowym budynkiem klasy I.

To get to the house we stroll along a beautiful ornamental lake (3 1/2 acres or so) formed from former fishponds and fed by the Wey Brook.

Droga do rezydencji prowadzi wzdłuż pięknego, ozdobnego jeziora (około 3,5 akrów) utworzonego z dawnych stawów rybnych i zasilanego przez Wey Brook.

The classical portico (pictured below) on the riverside was added in XVII century and the Palladian staircase in the XVIII century.

Klasycystyczny portyk od strony północnej (nad rzeką) dobudowani w XVII wieku (zdjęcie niżej), a w wieku XVIII powstała palladiańska klatka schodowa.

The house holds treasures collected by the Chute family, including furniture, tapestries and paintings, Murano glass and silk wall hangings.

W domu znajdują się skarby zebrane przez rodzinę Chute, w tym meble, gobeliny i obrazy, draperie ze szkła Murano i jedwabiu.

The Tudor chapel boasts its 500 year-old Majolica tiles, Renaissance stained glass, and exquisite wood,. It is also worth to pay attention to the period linen-fold panelling in the oak gallery. This is meant to resemble the folds of a linen sheet but in wood

Kaplica Tudorów szczyci się 500-letnimi płytkami z majoliki, renesansowymi witrażami i wykwintnym drewnem. Warto również zwrócić uwagę na stylową boazerię “płócienną” w dębowej galerii. Ma to przypominać fałdy lnu lub płótna, ale wykonane jest w drewnie.

The house is set in 13 acres of beautiful, relaxing gardens. These include herbaceous borders, a wild garden and orchard, lawns, lakes and woodland walks. 

Dom położony jest na 13 akrach pięknych ogrodów zawierających rabaty kwietnie i zielne, tzw. „dziki” ogród, sad, trawniki, oraz scieżki przez tereny zalesione.

The garden contains what could be the oldest garden building in England, a summerhouse dating from the 1630s.

 W ogrodzie znajduje się prawdopodobnie najstarszy budynek ogrodowy w Anglii, altana z lat trzydziestych XVII wieku.

After the tour  of the house and ice-cream break, we spend majority of the afternoon chasing for single flowers and playing with the light in the camera.

Po zwiedzaniu domu i przerwie na lody, większość popołudnia spędzamy na poszukiwaniu pojedynczych kwiatów w ogrodzie i na łące i fotograficznej zabawie ze światłem.

Jane Austne's House

Jane Austen is one of the most famous and beloved English writers, and there are not so many people in Europe for whom titles such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, or Emma remain unknown. As COVID restrictions still make it difficult to travel far away, we decided to revisit Chawton, this time to see a cottage that belonged to the famous (if not properly acknowledge during her life) author. 

Jane Austen’s House in Chawton, was her final home, where she spent the last (and very productive) years of her life. And yes, you may remember another entry to my blog about the Chawton House, a much bigger manor house which belonged to her brother Edward, adopted by the Knight family. Scroll down the blog, and you will find it if you are interested. 

But it was this smaller house that belonged to Jane and her mother, where she wrote her most famous novels. Jane lived in this house for eight years, and she left it only in May 1817, when she had to seek medical treatment in Winchester, where unfortunately she died two months later.

Jane Austen to jedna z najbardziej znanych i lubianych angielskich pisarek, a w Europie nie ma zbyt wielu osób, dla których tytuły, takie jak Rozważna i Romantyczna, Duma i Uprzedzenie, Mansfield Park czy Emma pozostają nieznane. Ponieważ ograniczenia COVID nadal utrudniają dalekie podróże, postanowiliśmy ponownie odwiedzić Chawton, tym razem, aby zobaczyć dom należący do słynnej (chociaż nie docenionej za życia) autorki.

 Chawton był ostatnim domem Jane Austin, to w nim spędziła ostatnie (i bardzo produktywne) lata swojego życia. Być może pamiętacie inny wpis na moim blogu o Chawton House, znacznie większym dworku należącym do jej brata Edwarda, zaadoptowanego przez rodzinę Knight. Przewińcie trochę bloga, a znajdziecie ten post, jeśli jesteście zainteresowany.

Ale to w tym mniejszym domu,  należałcym do Jane i jej matki, autorka dokończyła swoje najsłynniejsze powieści. Jane mieszkała w tym domu przez osiem lat, a opuściła go dopiero w maju 1817 roku, kiedy musiała szukać pomocy medycznej w Winchester, gdzie niestety zmarła dwa miesiące później.

Żeby za dużo nie gadać, resztę niech opowiedzą zdjęcia domu i ogrodu. 

Across from the house, on the corner of the street we noticed some lovely tearooms and - you know us by now - of course we went in for a treat. And treat it was. My chocolate croissant was extremely delicious. Add to this a cup of Earl Grey tea and what else may you need to finish the day beautifully…

Naprzeciwko domu, na rogu ulicy, zauważyliśmy uroczą herbaciarnę i - już nas znacie pod tym względem - oczywiście weszliśmy w poszukiwaniu łakoci. I łakocie znaleźliśmy. Mój czekoladowy rogalik był wyjątkowo pyszny. Dodać do tego filiżankę herbaty Earl Grey i czego jeszcze można chcieć, aby pięknie zakończyć dzień…
