Orchid festival 2025

The Orchid Festival at Kew Gardens is back, and this year's theme is Peru! Talk about perfect timing - we're actually heading to Peru in March!

Tegorocznym tematem Festiwalu Orchidei w Kew Gardens jest Peru! O wilku mowa. W Marcu jakby nie było jedziemy na naszą pierwsza wyprawę do Peru.

As we were making our way to the conservatory, we bumped into a wild fox! It was clearly hungry and with a bit of a limp. The day was freezing, too. Luckily, I happened to have some cat food in my bag (I usually do), and the fox was incredibly pleased to get it. And that made us happy.

Po drodze do szklarni przydarzyło nam się spotkanie z liskiem. Lis wyraźnie głodny i trochę utykał, a dzień był wyjątkowo zimny. Na szczęście miałam w torebce saszetkę kociej karmy (od wyjazdu do Maroko zrobił mi się taki zwyczaj). Lis był bardzo zadowolony, że ją dostał. A my jeszcze bardziej.

Walking into the glasshouse, we’re immediately greeted by an alpaca covered in orchids.

Wchodząc do szklarni, od razu wita nas alpaka pokryta orchideami.

Then, the Peruvian landscape comes to life in floral form. The central pond is transformed into a scene reminiscent of Lake Titicaca, one of Peru’s national symbols. The flowers spill out, showcasing the country’s rich biodiversity. In the next pond, we find floral flamingos standing proudly against a backdrop of Machu Picchu – another iconic image.

Dalej peruwiański krajobraz odzwierciedlony jest w kwiatowych instalacjach. Centralny staw przekształca się w scenę przypominającą jezioro Titicaca, jeden z peruwiańskich symboli narodowych. Kwiaty wylewają się tu z każdego kąta, prezentując bogatą bioróżnorodność kraju. W kolejnym stawie kwiatowe flamingi stoją dumnie na tle Machu Picchu.

The next part of the exhibition has a form of an aviary with installations representing various birds to celebrate Peru's diverse bird populations.  There are also various butterflies and other insects.

Kolejna część wystawy ma formę woliery z instalacjami przedstawiającymi różne gatunki ptaków, symbol zróżnicowanej populacji ptaków w Peru. Na wystawie zobaczyć można również różne motyle i inne owady.

It was also nice to wander under a “night sky”, decorated with Allium flower heads recycled from Kew's outdoor gardens.

Miło było także powłóczyć się pod „nocnym niebem”, udekorowanym główkami kwiatów Allium uzbieranych w ogrodach Kew.

After browsing a souvenir shop where we ended up with unreasonable amount of locally made chocolate, we continued our walk and came across cute spectacled bears hiding among the flowers and close to the waterfall.

Po wizycie w sklepie z pamiątkami, z którego wyszliśmy z idiotyczną ilością lokalnie produkowanej czekolady, natknęliśmy się na urocze niedźwiedzie andyjskie ukrywające się wśród kwiatów i nad wodospadem.

Peru's got it all, from stunning beaches and lush rainforests to dramatic deserts and towering mountains. It's also home to an incredible 3,000+ species of orchids, plus a ton of other amazing wildlife. The festival does a fantastic job of capturing that beauty and biodiversity in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

Peru ma wszystko, od pięknych plaż i bujnych lasów deszczowych po dramatyczne pustynie i wznoszące się wysoko góry. Jest także domem dla ponad 3000 gatunków orchidei. Festiwal odbywający się całkowicie na terenie szklarni Princess of Wales pokazuje piękno i bioróżnorodności tego kraju.

Christmas at kew (2024 edition) part 3

Next comes the Electric Ribbon, a swirling ribbon of red light weaving through several trees. Behind it is Electric Bamboo, made up of thick bamboo poles with patterned holes, lit from within so the light shines through.

Potem pojawia się Electric Ribbon - wijąca się wśród drzew czerwona wstęga światła. Tuż za nią znajduje się instalacja Electric Bamboo, złożona z podświetlonych od środka grubych bambusowych słupów z wyciętymi wzorami.

We then enter the Fire Garden, where more than 20 metal Christmas-tree structures (between 1 and 1.75 metres tall) stand along either side of the path, each adorned with flaming lanterns. I suspect these are the same lanterns used to create the Sea of Fire in front of the Temperate House last year (see my blog entry from the previous season), repurposed for this year’s trail - which does not make this installation less peasant. We can feel the warmth of the fire, much appreciated on a cold night, and smell the burning wood and oil while watching the flickering flames in their orange glow.

Kolejna instalacja to Fire Garden, gdzie po obu stronach ścieżki stoi ponad 20 metalowych konstrukcji w kształcie choinek (o wysokości od 1 do 1,75 metra), każda udekorowana płonącymi lampionami. Podejrzewam, że są to te same lampiony, które w zeszłym roku posłużyły do stworzenia Sea of Fire przed Temperate House (o czym jest mój wpis na blogu z poprzedniego roku), teraz wykorzystane ponownie na tegorocznym szlaku  - co absolutnie nie umniejsza obecnej instalacji. Czujemy przyjemne ciepło ognia, szczególnie mile widziane w chłodny wieczór, i wyczuwamy zapach palącego się drewna oraz oleju, obserwując migoczące płomienie skąpane w pomarańczowej poświacie.

Rainbow Road - a path flooded with the colours of the rainbow - leads us to the Christmas Cathedral, a 39-metre-long installation made from tens of thousands of twinkling LED lights.

From here, Candy Trees made of neon sticks guide us to the Meadow of Lights, where more than 10,000 flowers bloom using fibre-optic blades of light.

The final installation of this year’s trail is the Christmas Turkey Oak, a magnificent tree with its trunk and branches completely covered in countless tiny lights.

Stąd Candy Trees wykonane z neonowych słupów prowadzą nas do Meadow of Lights, gdzie ponad 10 000 kwiatów „rozkwita” dzięki światłowodowym światłom.

Ostatnią instalacją tegorocznego szlaku jest Christmas Turkey Oak - majestatyczne drzewo, którego pień i gałęzie są całkowicie pokryte niezliczonymi maleńkimi światełkami.

Christmas at Kew (2024 edition) part 2

The path leads us to what would be the first installation if we entered via Elizabeth Gate. We walk through a lit archway with star projections on the ground and into Snowy Lane, where illuminated silver and golden deer and reindeer are scattered among the trees. Representing friendly woodland spirits, they draw us into a fairy-tale atmosphere of the trail. Golden spruces and birch trees made from sparkling lights add to the effect.

Ścieżka prowadzi nas dalej do miejsca, które byłoby początkiem trasy, gdybyśmy weszli przez Elizabeth Gate. Przechodzimy przez podświetlony łuk w kształcie komety i trafiamy na Snowy Lane, gdzie między drzewami stoją świecące srebrnym i złotym światłem jelenie i renifery. Symbolizują one przyjazne duchy lasu i wprowadzają bajkowy klimat już od pierwszych kroków trasy. Całość dopełniają złote „świerki” i „brzozy”, stworzone z migoczących świateł.

We then approach Threshold, a five-metre-high structure shaped like a pair of spreading wings that slowly changes colour. It serves as a prelude to the next installation, Ombre, where clusters of six-petalled flowers gradually shift through different colours, creating a mesmerising effect. The remaining puddles from the rain reflect the light beautifully.

To warm ourselves up, we go for mulled wine/ hot chocolate.

Następnie pojawia się Threshold - pięciometrowa konstrukcja przypominająca rozłożone skrzydła, powoli zmieniająca kolory. To zapowiedź instalacji Ombre, gdzie kwiaty o sześciu płatkach płynnie przechodzą przez różne barwy. Światło pięknie odbija się w kałużach pozostałych po deszczu.

Aby się trochę rozgrzać, zatrzymujemy sie w barze na grzańca i gorącą czekoladę.

Then we approach the second major highlight of the trail: the Sea of Lights. This large-scale - enormous, really - ­installation fills the area in front of the Temperate House with thousands of LED light spheres moving in waves to a soundtrack. Beginning in the cedar trees, the lights flow across the lawn and over the building. It is truly impressive, and quite possibly my favourite installation this year.

Kolejnym głównym punktem programu jest Sea of Lights. To ogromna instalacja przed Temperate House: tysiące kul LEDowych świateł poruszają się falami w rytm muzyki. Światła zaczynają się wśród cedrów, rozlewają po całym trawniku i obejmują nawet budynek. Efekt jest imponujący i to prawdopodobnie moja ulubiona instalacja w tym roku.

In Cherry Tree Avenue, we encounter Sakura. The trees are lit from below by rings of bright neon at the base of their trunks, with colours and intensity changing in synchronisation with music.

W alei wiśniowej czeka instalacja Sakura. Drzewa są podświetlone neonowymi pierścieniami światła u podstawy pni, a ich kolory i intensywność zmieniają się w synchronizacji z muzyką.

We then pass Father Christmas and arrive at the fairground area, where the catering is located, and happily stop to devour a pizza (me) or rice with meat (Marcin).

Mijamy Świętego Mikołaja i docieramy do części z punktami gastronomicznymi, gdzie z przyjemnością robimy przerwę na pizzę (ja) i danie z mięsem i ryżem (Marcin).

The trail continues through the Sparkle Trees, where beams of light cut through the mist and thousands of sparkling points create something of a disco atmosphere. We saw this installation last year at Hillier Gardens (see my relevant blog entry), but it remains a lot of fun.

Dalsza część trasy prowadzi przez Sparkle Trees. Promienie laserów przecinają mgłę, a tysiące migoczących punktów tworzą niemal dyskotekową atmosferę. Widzieliśmy tę instalację już w zeszłym roku w Hillier Gardens (patrz mój wpis do bloga na ten temat), ale nadal robi ona na nas wrażenie.

The Baton Show, located near the treetop walkway, is difficult to photograph but very pleasant to watch. Rows upon rows of batons spread changing light patterns across the ground.

As we walk along the pond and cross an illuminated bridge, fish made of light bulbs appear to leap out of the water.

The Haze Arches - semi-circular light structures with mist emphasising the light - line the path across the bridge. They look as if they were steaming.

Baton Show w okolicach treetop walkway jest trudny do sfotografowania, ale bardzo efektowny na żywo. Długie rzędy świetlnych pałeczek pulsują zmieniając wzory i kolory.

Przechodząc obok stawu i przez podświetlony most, widzimy „świetlne ryby” wyskakujące z wody.

Haze Arches – lampy w postaci łuków, gdzie kolorowe światła podkreślone są przez mgiełkę (wygląda to, jakby lampy parowały) - towarzyszą nam na całej długości mostu.

Christmas at Kew (2024 edition) part 1

We start 2025 with a visit to Kew Gardens to see their light trail. The trail is approximately 3 km long and, in theory, takes about two hours to complete, though for us it was closer to three and a half ;). It is raining when we arrive, and we brace ourselves for a wet few hours, but the universe is kind: the rain slows to a light drizzle before we get too cold and miserable. It stops and returns a few times, but never becomes heavy again.

We enter via Victoria Gate, and as such the first installation we encounter is Christmas Presents. This consists of a series of two-metre-high arches with hanging ribbons lit by multi-coloured lights. Walking through them immerses us in light and colour, and our spirits immediately lift.

Rok 2025 zaczynamy wizytą w Kew Gardens i ich zimowym szlakiem świetlnym. Trasa ma około 3 km długości i teoretycznie powinna zająć dwie godziny, ale w naszym przypadku było to raczej trzy i pół ;). Kiedy przyjeżdżamy, pada deszcz i mentalnie przygotowujemy się na mokry, niezbyt przyjemny wieczór. Na szczęście los okazuje się łaskawy - deszcz szybko słabnie do lekkiej mżawki, zanim zdążymy naprawdę zmarznąć i przemoknąć. Co prawda kilka razy jeszcze wraca, ale już nigdy nie pada zbyt mocno.

Do ogrodów wchodzimy przez Victoria Gate, dlatego nasza pierwsza instalacja to Christmas Presents. To seria dwumetrowych łuków z wiszącymi wstążkami, podświetlonymi kolorowymi światłami. Przechodzimy przez nie, zanurzając się w barwach i świetle, co od razu poprawia nam nastrój.

From here we reach the Shadow Lanterns, which cast patterned light across an otherwise very dark pathway. At the end of this path, a tree is lit from behind and silhouetted against the sky.

Dalej trafiamy na Shadow Lanterns, które rzucają wzorzyste światło na inaczej nie oświetloną ścieżkę.

Next is the Snowflake Walk, an interactive path where snowflakes projected onto the ground appear and multiply beneath our steps. Ahead of us, beams of light move and swirl as we walk towards and through the Arch of Light.

Kolejną instalacją jest Snowflake Walk - interaktywna alejka, na której na ziemi pojawiają się i rozmnażają świetlne płatki śniegu reagujące na nasze kroki. Przed nami snopy światła wirują w powietrzu, prowadząc nas w stronę i potem pod Arch of Light.

We then arrive at one of the main highlights of the trail: the Palm House Show. Here, the circles and splashes of light are projected through the pond across the surface of Kew’s Palm House, all synchronised with music and fountains. A glowing snow-globe made of light reveals silhouettes of London landmarks, including Big Ben, which feels particularly fitting for the New Year. We stand on the platform to watch the show, which lasts about ten minutes and is excellent - though perhaps just half a mark below the one we saw at Blenheim earlier this season.

Jedną z głównych instalacji tej trasy jest - podobnie, jak w zeszłym roku - Palm House Show. Na fasadzie Palmiarni wyświetlane są światła lasera, zsynchronizowane z muzyką i fontannami. W ogromnej świetlnej kuli pojawiają się londyńskie symbole, w tym Big Ben, jako noworoczny akcent. Spektakl trwa około dziesięciu minut i robi duże wrażenie, choć minimalnie ustępuje temu, który widzieliśmy w tym sezonie w Blenheim.

And now it is time for churros.

A po tym spektaklu jest czas na małe co nieco, czyli churros.

Halloween at Kew

Kew Gardens is celebrated for its stunning Christmas illuminated trails, so when they announced the launch of a Halloween trail this year, we jumped at the chance to buy the tickets—thankfully, as they sold out quite rapidly.

The experience surpassed our expectations as Kew Gardens once again showcased its remarkable creativity and design. The light installations were expertly arranged, and the accompanying music and occasional eerie sounds heightened the spooky ambiance, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

We were truly impressed by the quality and variety of the installations—none felt repetitive, and the diverse soundscapes matched each visual theme perfectly. Some areas featured haunting music, while others had sci-fi sounds or merely creepy noises like shrieks and groans. As the air was filled with spooky sound effects, the actors in eerie costumes roamed the main pathways, with some lurking just behind the ropes for added surprise.

As we made our way through the trail, we first encountered an old witch brewing potions and stirring her cauldron.

Kew Gardens słynie z rewelacyjnych bożonarodzeniowych ścieżek światła, więc gdy w tym roku ogłoszono, że po raz pierwszy będzie również szlak halloweenowy, od razu skorzystaliśmy z okazji, aby kupić bilety. Na całe szczęście, bo interesujące nas daty wyprzedały się w tempie błyskawicznym. I nie bez powodu. Halloween w Kew przerósł nasze (i tak dość śmiałe) oczekiwania.

Instalacje świetlne zostały zaaranżowane w bardzo profesjonalny sposób, a towarzysząca im muzyka i wszelkie inne dźwięki potęgowały upiorny nastrój, tworząc fantastyczną halloweenową atmosferę.

Byliśmy naprawdę pod wrażeniem jakości i różnorodności instalacji — żadna nie wydawała się powtarzalna, a różnorodne krajobrazy dźwiękowe idealnie pasowały do ​​każdego motywu wizualnego. W niektórych obszarach słychać było muzykę rodem z filmu o nawiedzonych, podczas gdy w innych dominowały dźwięki science-fiction lub wzbudzające niepokój odgłosy, takie jak skrzek pająków czy szuranie butów. Podczas, gdy powietrze było wypełnione efektami dźwiękowymi, aktorzy w realistycznych kostiumach przechadzali się głównymi ścieżkami, a niektórzy kryli się w ciemnościach obok ścieżki, aby nagle na nią wyjść (albo i nie) i dołożyć element totalnego zaskoczenia.

Nasz szlak zaczął się od spotkania starej czarownicy warzącej mikstury i mieszającej w kotle.

Next, we walked through an eerie pumpkin field, where giant pumpkins, artfully arranged, seemed to snarl at us, while scarecrows appeared to scare us more than any crows.

Następnie przeszliśmy przez upiorne pole dyń, gdzie gigantyczne dynie patrzyły na nas złowrogo, a strachy na wróble straszyły nas bardziej niż jakiekolwiek wróble.

We then passed a large congregation of ghouls perched with lanterns in their hands, looking ominously like scarecrows themselves. Following that, we encountered a huge glowing tree, its roots extending far and dotted with skeletons.

Następnie minęliśmy dużą grupę ghulów przycupniętych z latarniami w rękach, wyglądających nawet bardziej złowieszczo niż wspomniane strachy na wróble. Za nimi natknęliśmy się na ogromne świecące drzewo, którego korzenie rozchodziły się daleko, daleko i były usiane licznymi szkieletami.

The path led us then into the spiders' zone, featuring a spiderweb tunnel glowing in ultraviolet light. Some spiders were perched on the webs, their eerie forms accentuated by the blue lighting that enveloped the area. My orange-painted nails glowed surrealistically under the atmospheric illumination, adding an unexpected pop of colour amidst the spooky scene. Scattered across the ground were enormous spiders, their formidable size adding to the sense of immersion and thrill as we navigated this hauntingly beautiful landscape.

Ścieżka zaprowadziła nas następie do strefy pająków, w której znajdował się tunel z pajęczyny skąpany w ultrafioletowym świetle. Na pajęczynach siedziało kilka pająków, ich kształty upiornie podkreślone tym niebieskim światłem. (PS. Moje pomalowane na pomarańczowo paznokcie świeciły surrealistycznie w tym oświetleniu). Na ziemi rozrzucone były też ogromne pająki, których imponujące rozmiary potęgowały poczucie niepokoju i grozy, gdy poruszaliśmy się po tym makabrycznym krajobrazie.

From there, we ventured into the monster’s corner, where the atmosphere grew even more thrilling and slightly unnerving. The space was adorned with glowing green skeletons, their eerie luminescence casting a spectral glow throughout the area. Ancient lanterns flickered with a ghostly green light, illuminating the surroundings and revealing peculiar mushrooms sprouting in odd corners. Coffins dotted the landscape, some slightly ajar, revealing skeletal remains. Scattered around were barrels topped with skulls, each one a grim reminder of the spooky theme that permeated this corner of Kew Gardens. Just when we thought we had seen it all, a strange monster lurked in the shadows. It paced restlessly around in the darkness, occasionally running towards unsuspecting passers-by if they came too close to the enclosure, adding an exhilarating thrill to the experience that kept everyone on their toes.

Stamtąd udaliśmy się do krainy potworów, gdzie atmosfera stała się jeszcze bardziej niepokojąca. Wzdłuż ścieżki rozsiane tu były szkielety, wydzielające złowieszczą zieloną luminescencję. Stare latarnie migotały upiornym - także zielonym - światłem, pozwalając nam dostrzec wielkie grzyby wyrastające w różnych zakamarkach lasu. Krajobraz zdobiły także trumny, niektóre lekko uchylone, odsłaniające szczątki szkieletów. Wokół rozrzucone były beczki zwieńczone czaszkami, ponurym przypomnieniem upiornego motywu tego zakątka Kew Gardens. Gdy myśleliśmy, że widzieliśmy już wszystko, natrafiliśmy na czającego się w cieniu potwora. Kręcił się on niespokojnie spowity mrokiem, od czasu do czasu biegnąc w stronę niczego niepodejrzewających przechodniów, jeśli podeszli zbyt blisko jego wybiegu.

After escaping the big monster, we entered a disorienting area filled with laser lights—the constantly moving beams made it easy to lose our sense of direction, creating a fun yet slightly dizzying experience. I suspect the same company that designed this installation also arranged the laser light area in last year’s Hillier’s Gardens Christmas trail. The lights were very similar. The feeling was not.

Po ucieczce z krainy potworów weszliśmy w dezorientujący obszar wypełniony światłami laserowymi. Stale poruszające się wiązki świata sprawiały, że łatwo było stracić poczucie orientacji. Podejrzewam, że ta sama firma, która zaprojektowała tę instalację, zorganizowała również obszar ze światłami laserowymi na zeszłorocznym szlaku świątecznym w Hillier’s Gardens. Światła były bardzo podobne. Atmosfera jednak inna.

As the evening deepened, our adventure continued with mulled wine, hot chocolate, and fire performers, who showcased a variety of short acts every few minutes. They were so captivating that we ended up staying for four performances. The performers brandished flaming poles, their movements showcasing their agility as they executed intricate dance routines. With every flick of the wrist, the flames twisted and curled, illuminating their poised figures against the night sky. Surrounding the performers were elaborate catapults, each holding open caskets shrouded in a mysterious fog. The eerie light danced on the fog, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere that added an extra layer of intrigue to the performance. Whispers of a story began to weave through the air—that the veil between the living and the dead was thinning, allowing glimpses into another realm.

Dalej na szlaku czekała nas gorąca czekolada z grzanym winem i akrobaci tańczący z ogniem. Kilku wykonawców naprzemiennie prezentowało różne choreografie z płonącymi pochodniami. Z każdym ich ruchem płomienie skręcały się i zwijały, oświetlając ich postacie na tle nocnego nieba i oczywiście kilku trumien. Wykonawców otaczały bowiem katafalki z trumnami, z których wydobywały się dziwne dźwięki i dymy. Tancerze tłumaczyli, że zasłona między światami żywych a umarłych się przerzedza, pozwalając na wgląd w inny wymiar.

Finally, we traversed an old cemetery, where the air was thick with an otherworldly presence. As we wandered among the weathered tombstones, we encountered vampires (Dracula himself was there), and various ghosts. While posing for a picture at the cemetery entrance, I was blissfully unaware of the old grave digger lurking behind me- or was he a vampire in disguise? He mimicked my pose with a mischievous grin, adding an unexpected twist to my moment in the spotlight.

Although the trail was advertised as 90 minutes long, we took our time and spent about three hours exploring this land of spookiness, and it provided great entertainment. Looking forward to the next year…

Na koniec przeszliśmy przez stary cmentarz, gdzie powietrze było aż gęste od pozaziemskiej obecności. Wędrując między zniszczonymi nagrobkami, natknęliśmy się na wampiry (był nawet sam Drakula) i różne duchy. Pozując do zdjęcia przy wejściu na cmentarz, nie byłam świadoma starego grabarza czającego się tuż za mną (grabarz czy wampir, kto wie kim on był…) Naśladował moje pozy i darł ze mnie łacha przez długą chwilę a ja zupełnie nie wiedziałam o jego obecności…

Chociaż szlak był w teorii 90-minutowy, my jak to my, za bardzo się nie spieszyliśmy się i spędziliśmy około trzech godzin na eksploracji tej krainy upiorności, co zapewniło nam świetną rozrywkę. Już czekamy na przyszły rok….
