YSL Musem

Few steps away from the gardens we find Yves Saint Laurent’s Museum, featuring some of his dresses, drawings, and movies about the designer. As much as I like YSL, the highlight of this place was for me the building itself. Toned-down ocher and brick colours contrast beautifully with bright hues of tinted-glass windows, whilst cubic shapes are connected by sweeping curves.

Pięć minut od ogrodów spacerkiem znajduje się Muzeum YSL, w którym można zobaczyć niektóre kreacje, szkice oraz filmy o tym projektancie mody. O ile lubię YSL, o tyle największą atrakcją tego miejsca był dla mnie sam budynek. Stonowane barwy ochry i cegły pięknie kontrastują z nasyconymi kolorami okiennych szyb, a sześcienne kształty łączą zamaszyste łuki.

There is also a nice café inside, with a patio containing soe greenery and a swimming pool. Obviously, we use the opportunity to rehydrate (the juices here are above average tasty).

Wewnątrz znajduje się również przyjemna kawiarnia z patio pełnym zieleni i basenem. Oczywiście korzystamy z okazji, aby się nawodnić (soki tutaj są ponadprzeciętne smaczne).

Museum of Marrakesh

Our next destination is the Dar Mnebhi palace from the late nineteenth century, a great example of classical Andalusian architecture, housing the Museum of Marrakesh.

Po lunchu kierujemy się do pałacu Dar Mnebhi z końca XIX wieku, wspaniałego przykładu klasycznej architektury andaluzyjskiej, w którym mieści się Muzeum Marakeszu.

First, we go to see a beautiful smaller traditional courtyard.  Rooms around this courtyard contain the museum’s collection of paintings.

Najpierw idziemy zobaczyć piękny, mniejszy, tradycyjny dziedziniec. Pomieszczenia wokół tego dziedzińca zawierają kolekcję malarstwa.

More paintings are presented in the old hammam and kitchen.

Kolejne obrazy są wystawione w starej łaźni tureckiej i kuchni.

The most impressive part of this building is a massive patio with a magnificent brass chandelier adorned with ornate geometric and arabesque motifs.  Nowadays fully paved and roofed over; in the past, it used to be an open garden planted with trees and flowers. The patio has a few fountains and is decorated with zelliij (zellige) tilework, stained glass and carved cedar wood.

Najbardziej imponującą częścią budynku jest ogromne patio ze wspaniałym mosiężnym żyrandolem ozdobionym bogatymi motywami geometrycznymi i arabeskowymi. Obecnie patio ma położoną mozaikową  podłogę i jest zadaszone, w przeszłości znajdował sie tutaj otwarty ogród obsadzony drzewami i kwiatami. Patio posiada kilka fontann i jest ozdobione kafelkami zelliij (zellige), witrażami i rzeźbionym drewnem cedrowym.

The rooms around the courtyards, some adorned with beautiful stucco and wood decorations, are filled with weapons, clothes, pottery and other traditional Moroccan objects.

Pokoje wokół dziedzińców, niektóre ozdobione pięknymi dekoracjami stiukowymi i drewnianymi, są wypełnione bronią, ubraniami, ceramiką i innymi tradycyjnymi przedmiotami.

Musee de la Musique

From Le Jardin Secret, we backtrack a little to the Mouassine district to find the Musee de Mouassine, also known as Musee de la Musique. The museum is tucked away next to the south-eastern corner of the Mouassine Mosque, along Derb el Hammam. It takes us a moment to find it, and we must go through a passage with a very low ceiling.

Z Le Jardin Secret cofamy się trochę do dzielnicy Mouassine, aby znaleźć Musee de Mouassine, znane również jako Musee de la Musique. Muzeum jest schowane obok południowo-wschodniego rogu meczetu Mouassine, przy Derb el Hammam. Znalezienie go zajmuje nam chwilę, zwłaszcza, że musimy przejść przez przejście z bardzo niskim sufitem, co wygląda jakbyśmy się pakowali komuś w jego rozwalające się podwórko.

The architecture of this place itself makes it worth a visit, but the display is also interesting, telling visitors about the diversity of music in Morocco and its multiple Andalusian, Berber and African heritages.

Sama architektura tego miejsca sprawia, że warto je odwiedzić, ale eksponaty są również interesujące, opowiadając odwiedzającym o różnorodności muzyki w Maroku i jego wielorakim dziedzictwie: andaluzyjskim, berberyjskim i afrykańskim.

The museum is hosted in a beautiful XVI-century Saadian house carefully renovated to its former glory.

Muzeum mieści się w pięknym XVI-wiecznym domu Saadytów, starannie odrestaurowanym do swojej dawnej świetności.

The house contains a first-floor douiria (guest apartment). Its reception room with amazingly colourful wood carvings and a central skylight belongs to the best we have seen in Marrakesh.

Na pierwszym piętrze domu znajduje się douiria - mieszkanie dla gości. Jego główny pokój z kolorowymi rzeźbami w drewnie i z centralnym świetlikiem należy do najlepszych historycznych wnętrz, jakie widzieliśmy w Marrakeszu.

There is also a nice rooftop café here, with so many cute seating areas that I do not know which one to choose. Eventually, we stay on the highest terrace, listening to the muezzins calling for prayers whilst tasting mint tea (or, in Marcin’s case, coffee).

Jest tu także ładna kawiarnia na dachu,  z tak wieloma uroczymi miejscami do siedzenia, że nie wiem, który zakątek wybrać. Ostatecznie zostajemy na najwyższym tarasie, słuchając muezzinów nawołujących do modlitwy i degustując herbatę miętową (a w przypadku Marcina kawę).

(Not so) Secret Garden

The very first place we visit in Marrakesh is Le Jardin Secret. Despite the name, the garden isn’t that much of a secret anymore. On the contrary, it is usually on a “must visit” list of nearly everyone visiting Marrakesh, so it is worth coming early (or very late) to avoid the crowds. And that is why we start the day from here.

Pierwszym miejscem, które odwiedzamy w Marrakeszu, jest Le Jardin Secret. Wbrew swojej nazwie ogrody te nie są żadną tajemnicą. Wręcz przeciwnie, zwykle znajduje się na liście „must visit” prawie każdej osoby odwiedzającej Marrakesz, dlatego warto tu przyjść, jak tylko otwierają (lub bardzo późno), aby uniknąć tłumów. I dlatego też zaczynamy dzień od tego miejsca.

A powerful local chief once owned this place, and it was one of the largest private riads in the medina. But it is not the old buildings that are the attention catcher here; it is the lush greenery of the exotic and Islamic gardens. The riad was watered by a unique underground irrigation system (khettara), which is still operational today. We understood much better how it works after watching a very interesting movie in one of the visitable rooms on the ground floor. The khettara is a ground drainage tunnel that intercepts the water of the groundwater aquifer and then distributes it to the city’s mosques, fountains and hammams. It also reached some of the great houses, including Le Jardin Secret, which had its own water supply -  a rare privilege and an additional sign of wealth.

Dzisiejszy Le Jardin Secret był kiedyś jednym z największych prywatnych riadów w medynie. Ale to nie stare budynki najbardziej przyciągają tutaj uwagę, a raczej dwa piękne ogrody: egzotyczny i islamski. Caly teren riadu był nawadniany przez unikalny podziemny system nawadniania (khettara), który funkcjonuje do dziś. Zasady jego działania zrozumieliśmy po obejrzeniu bardzo ciekawego filmu w jednej z sal pawilonu udostępnionych do zwiedzania. Khettara to podziemny tunel odwadniający, który przechwytuje wodę z warstwy wodonośnej wód gruntowych, a następnie rozprowadza ją do miejskich meczetów, fontann i łaźni. Tunele te docierały także do najważniejszych riadów, w tym Le Jardin Secret, który miał dzięki temu własny dostęp do wody– rzadki przywilej i dodatkowy znak zamożności.

To see the watch tower, we head up the narrow stairs to the café at its base, where we are collected by the local guide. The 17-m tall tower is constructed from brick and lime mortar, with large wooden beams enclosed in the walls to consolidate the structure. The room on the top floor has a richly decorated ceiling and an excellently decorated door.

Aby obejrzeć wieżę wartowniczą wchodzimy wąskimi schodami do kawiarni u jej podnóża, gdzie czeka na nas miejscowy przewodnik. 17-metrowa wieża jest zbudowana z cegły i zaprawy wapiennej, a duże drewniane belki są zamknięte w ścianach, aby wzmocnić jej konstrukcję. Pomieszczenie na najwyższym piętrze ma bogato zdobiony sufit i pięknie zdobione drzwi.

From the top of the tower, we can admire the whole medina.  

Ze szczytu wieży możemy podziwiać całą medynę.

On the way down, we stop in a cafe for a glass of juice. It is a splendid place to have a refresher whilst surveying the Secret Garden below.

Po drodze na dół zatrzymujemy się w kawiarni na szklankę soku pomarańczowego. Chwila relaksu przy soku, z widokiem na piękne ogrody poniżej, pomaga naładować akumulatory w tym upale.

The exotic garden is filled with plants from all over the world (for example, South Africa, Madagascar, Australia and Latin America), emphasising the experimental aspect of the great gardens of Marrakech. It recalls the Garden of Eden with colourful blooms, bird songs and water trickling from fountains and channels which irrigate the garden.

Egzotyczny ogród wypełniony jest roślinami z całego świata (m.in. z RPA, Madagaskaru, Australii i Ameryki Łacińskiej), podkreślając eksperymentalny aspekt znakomitych ogrodów Marrakeszu. Przypomina on ogród Eden z kolorowymi kwiatami, śpiewem ptaków i wodą sączącą się z fontann i kanałów nawadniających ogród.

The Islamic garden was restored following the likely nineteenth-century layout. This four-part layout of this garden was designed to facilitate the irrigation of the grounds. Rows of citrus trees help create the effect of the bustan, or scented orchard garden.

Islamski ogród został odrestaurowany zgodnie z tym, jak projektowano ogrody w XIX wieku. Czteroczęściowy układ tego ogrodu ułatwia także nawadnianie terenu. Rzędy drzew cytrusowych pomagają stworzyć efekt bustanu, czyli pachnącego sadu.

Voyage to the Edge of Imagination

The moment I found out about it, I knew Marcin would love it. So, this weekend we went to London to participate in the “Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of Imagination” immersive exhibition hosted in the Science Museum. It was designed by BAFTA and Academy award-winning Creative Studio Framestore. Their mission was: “To investigate how scientists and sci-fi creators have inspired each other to visualise and build new worlds and explore future possibilities the human world may hold.”

It already sounds quite exciting, doesn’t it? And it becomes more so for any fan of sci-fi movies when they learn they can see costumes and exhibits (or their exact replicas) from all sorts of celebrated sci-fi movies, TV series and books.

 The experience starts with us stepping into a space shuttle to travel to the research spacecraft called the Azimuth. From here, guided by an AI assistant, we explore how science and fiction are closely intertwined.

Jak tylko zobaczyłam reklamę, wiedziałam, że Marcinowi się ta wystawa bardzo spodoba. Zatem w ten weekend wybraliśmy się do Londynu, aby wziąć udział w interaktywnym pokazie „Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of Imagination” w Muzeum Nauki. Został on zaprojektowany przez Creative Studio Framestore będące laureatem konkursów BAFTA i Academy Awards (Oskary). Misja tego pokazu brzmi: „Zbadać, w jaki sposób naukowcy i twórcy science fiction inspirowali się nawzajem do wizualizacji i budowania nowych światów oraz odkrywania przyszłych możliwości”. Brzmi już całkiem obiecująco, prawda? A staje się to jeszcze bardziej ekscytujące dla każdego fana filmów science-fiction, gdy dowie się, że będzie mógł zobaczyć kostiumy i eksponaty (lub ich dokładne repliki) z wszelkiego rodzaju słynnych filmów, seriali telewizyjnych i książek o tematyce s-fi.

 Nasza przygoda rozpoczyna się od wejścia do promu kosmicznego, aby udać się na badawczy statek kosmiczny zwany Azymutem. Stąd, prowadzeni przez asystującą nam AI, wyruszamy odkrywać, w jaki sposób nauka i fikcja są ze sobą ściśle powiązane.

And the fun of recognising items from the iconic shows begins. Mondoshawan costume from The Fifth Element is the first, followed by a hyper-sleep chamber from Prometheus, a gold spacesuit from Sunshine, Alien costume from Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Dalek from Dr Who, Xenomorph and Cenomorph’s egg from Alien, Iron Man’s armour, Darth Vader’s helmet from The Empire Strikes Back, a model of the U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek to name just a few. There are also objects of science relevant to sf movies - a radio telescope used by scientists in their attempts to detect intelligent life, prosthetic body parts, the first peacemaker from 1958, the medical diagnostic unit called DxtER, space suits and many more.

I zaczyna się zabawa w rozpoznawanie przedmiotów z kultowych programów s-fi. Kostium Mondoshawana z Piątego Elementu jest pierwszy, a po nim komora hipersnu z Prometeusza, złoty skafander kosmiczny z Sunshine, kostium Obcego z Bliskich Spotkań Trzeciego Stopnia, Dalek z Dr Who, Xenomorph i jajo Cenomorph’a z Obcego, zbroja Iron Mana, hełm Dartha Vadera z Imperium kontratakuje, model U.S.S. Enterprise ze Star Trek, żeby wymienić tylko kilka. Są też obiekty nauki nawiązujące do filmów sf - radioteleskop używany przez naukowców w próbach wykrycia inteligentnego życia, protezy  różnych części ciała, pierwszy peacemaker z 1958 roku, medyczna jednostka diagnostyczna DxtER, skafandry kosmiczne i wiele, wiele innych.

We go through galleries that look like different chambers of a spaceship, passing the off-world section, where we can communicate with the aliens, responding to us via a murmuration of bioluminescent signs on the dome.

Przechodzimy przez galerie, które wyglądają jak różne kabiny statku kosmicznego, mijając także sekcję „poza światem”, gdzie możemy komunikować się z inna cywilizacja, odpowiadającą nam falowaniem bioluminescencyjnych znaków na kopule.

 Finally, we go through the observation deck, where we can look down on Earth from the space above.

Na koniec patrzymy na Ziemię z pokładu widokowego naszego statku.
