Henna Art Cafe

Henna Art Cafe located in the heart of the Marrakech medina, just a three-minute stroll down Riad Zeitoun al Kdim from Djemma El Fna, is our next port of call.

It is a cozy and intimate spot that combines traditional Moroccan henna art with modern amenities. The cafe is decorated with colourful tiles, intricate patterns, and comfortable seating areas, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We are greeted by the sweet scent of henna and the sound of traditional Moroccan music.

First, we sit down to quench our thirst and order chocolate amlou cookies and a seasonal fruit plate as a snack. As we eat I am choosing my henna pattern.

Kawiarnię ozdobiono kolorowymi kafelkami, misternymi wzorami i wygodnymi miejscami do siedzenia, tworząc ciepłą i zachęcającą atmosferę. Wita nas słodki zapach henny i dźwięki tradycyjnej muzyki marokańskiej. Najpierw siadamy, aby ugasić pragnienie i na przekąskę zamawiamy czekoladowe ciasteczka amlou i talerz owoców sezonowych. Kiedy jemy, wybieram wzór swojej henny.

Henna Art Cafe offer the finest henna to be found in the city, and they guarantee that it is 100% natural. They have been certified with the International Certification for Natural Henna Arts (ICNHA). The ingredients in their henna paste, which is mixed fresh every morning, are the dried, powdered leaves of the henna plant, lemon juice and sugar.  

I chose my pattern and a skilled artisan adorns my hand with an intricate design. It does not take long at all. Then it is dabbed in the lemon juice, and I have to wait for the fresh henna to dry a little. And it is all done.

Wybrałam swój wzór i jedna z henniarek ozdabia moją dłoń misternym wzorem, co wcale nie zajmuje to dużo czasu. Następnie hennę zwilża się sokiem z cytryny i muszę poczekać, aż trochę przeschnie, zanim wyjdziemy.

The House of Photography

The first place we are this afternoon is The House of Photography, located in a beautifully restored traditional Moroccan riad in the Medina, not too far from our hotel. The architecture of the building features intricate tilework, carved wooden doors, and decorative arches typical of Moroccan design. The internal courtyard is adorned with a central fountain and lush greenery, creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere.

The museum is dedicated to the history and culture of photography in Morocco. It houses a collection of historic photographs, glass negatives, cameras, and related artifacts dating from 1870 to 1960, and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the development of photography in Morocco and its impact on the country's culture and history.

Pierwszym miejscem, które odwiedzamy tego popołudnia, jest Dom Fotografii, mieszczący się w pięknie odrestaurowanym tradycyjnym marokańskim riadzie w Medynie, całkiem niedaleko od naszego hotelu. W architekturze budynku zwracają uwagę piękne kafelki, rzeźbione drewniane drzwi i dekoracyjne łuki typowe dla stylu marokańskiego. Wewnętrzny dziedziniec ozdobiony jest centralną fontanną i bujną zielenią.

Muzeum poświęcone jest historii fotografii w Maroku i zawiera kolekcję historycznych fotografii, szklanych negatywów, aparatów fotograficznych i powiązanych artefaktów z lat 1870–1960, oferując zwiedzającym wgląd w rozwój fotografii w Maroku i jej wpływ na kulturę i historię kraju.

The rooftop terrace, where a little café is located, offers a nice view of the city and a peaceful retreat from the relentless heat. We relax with a glass of fresh orange juice and take in the beauty of Marrakech.

Z tarasu na dachu, na którym znajduje się mała kawiarnia, roztacza się ładny widok na miasto, a cień i powiewy wiatru oferują wytchnienie od nieubłaganego upału. Relaksujemy się przy szklance świeżego soku pomarańczowego i podziwiamy piękno Marrakeszu.

Bubble's pink

On the way to the restaurant, a very pink cafe decorated with many artificial flowers caught my eye. I won't miss such nice kitsch in Morocco, so we end up here after our dinner for some bubble tea.

W drodze do restauracji wpada mi w oko bardzo różowa kawiarnia, ozdobiona dużą ilością sztucznych kwiatów. Tak fajnego kiczu w Maroku przecież nie przegapię, wiec lądujemy tu po obiedzie na bubble tea.

YSL Musem

Few steps away from the gardens we find Yves Saint Laurent’s Museum, featuring some of his dresses, drawings, and movies about the designer. As much as I like YSL, the highlight of this place was for me the building itself. Toned-down ocher and brick colours contrast beautifully with bright hues of tinted-glass windows, whilst cubic shapes are connected by sweeping curves.

Pięć minut od ogrodów spacerkiem znajduje się Muzeum YSL, w którym można zobaczyć niektóre kreacje, szkice oraz filmy o tym projektancie mody. O ile lubię YSL, o tyle największą atrakcją tego miejsca był dla mnie sam budynek. Stonowane barwy ochry i cegły pięknie kontrastują z nasyconymi kolorami okiennych szyb, a sześcienne kształty łączą zamaszyste łuki.

There is also a nice café inside, with a patio containing soe greenery and a swimming pool. Obviously, we use the opportunity to rehydrate (the juices here are above average tasty).

Wewnątrz znajduje się również przyjemna kawiarnia z patio pełnym zieleni i basenem. Oczywiście korzystamy z okazji, aby się nawodnić (soki tutaj są ponadprzeciętne smaczne).

Majorelle Blue

Jarden Majorelle was bought in 1984 by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge after its previous owner,  French landscape painter Jacques Majorelle, died in a car accident. The famous fashion designer’s goal was to protect this place from deterioration.

Majorelle created this beautiful botanical garden inspired by the Arab Islamic gardens around his villa and workshop. The villa, an iconic Majorelle Art Deco house, is painted in cobalt blue with a few splashes of bright yellow.

Jarden Majorelle został kupiony w 1984 roku przez Yvesa Saint Laurenta i Pierre'a Berge po tym, jak jego wcześniejszy właściciel, francuski malarz pejzażysta Jacques Majorelle, zginął w wypadku samochodowym. Celem słynnego projektanta mody było zabezpieczenie tego miejsca przed zniszczeniem.

Majorelle stworzył ten piękny botaniczny ogród inspirowany arabskimi ogrodami islamskimi wokół swojej willi i warsztatu. Kultowy dzisiaj budynek willi Art Deco, jest pomalowany na odważny kobaltowy kolor z kilkoma plamami intensywnej żółci.

The garden is centred around a water basin, and it contains three hundred and fifty plant species brought from the five continents, including cacti, hibiscus, cypresses, palm trees, geranium, weeping willows, bamboo, water lilies, bougainvillaea, and ferns. It is divided by four main walkways that cross each other. Every turning, every spot here is a photographer’s dream with vibrant pops of magenta, blue, green, yellow, and dark orange dominating the palette.

Ogród zawiera trzysta pięćdziesiąt gatunków roślin sprowadzonych z pięciu kontynentów, w tym kaktusy, hibiskusy, cyprysy, palmy, pelargonie, wierzby płaczące, bambusy, bugenwille i paprocie, a także staw z liliami wodnymi.  Cały teren jest podzielony czterema głównymi alejkami przecinającymi się ze sobą. Każdy zakręt, każdy kąt tutaj to raj dla fotografa, z akcentami magenty, niebieskiego, zileni, żółci i ciemnego pomarańczu dominującymi w palecie barw.

After Yves Saint Laurent passed away in 2008, his memorial was built in the garden.

Po śmierci Yvesa Saint Laurenta w 2008 roku w ogrodzie zbudowano pomnik poświęcony jego pamięci.

After visiting a small art gallery and gift shop we pop into the courtyard café to taste the local chocolate pancakes.

Po wizycie w małej galerii sztuki i sklepie z pamiątkami wpadamy jeszcze do kawiarni na dziedzińcu, aby spróbować lokalnych czekoladowych naleśników.
