Battersea Light Festival strikes again

It is that time of year again: the Battersea Light Festival is on, and we cannot miss it.

The first installation we see is right in front of the entrance at Malaysia Square. It is Atlas by Jon Voss — a large sculpture inspired by the myth of Atlas, the figure who bears the weight of the world on his shoulders. Here, the myth is reinterpreted with a mechanical, cyborg twist. It feels very futuristic, combining industrial aesthetics with luminous elements, and it immediately makes us think of Howl’s Moving Castle. Atlas is not meant to reference it directly, but it lives in the same emotional and visual neighbourhood: mythic, mechanical, a little weary, a little magical. We fall in love with this installation straight away.

Nadszedł znów ten moment w roku, kiedy Battersea rozświetla Light Festival i nie ma mowy, żebyśmy go przegapili.

Pierwszą instalację widzimy od razu przy wejściu, na Malaysia Square. To Atlas autorstwa Jona Vossa - monumentalna rzeźba inspirowana mitem o Atlasie, postaci dźwigającej ciężar świata na swoich barkach. Tutaj mit został przefiltrowany przez mechaniczno-cyberpunkową estetykę. Całość jest bardzo futurystyczna: industrialna forma, światło, metal, a jednocześnie coś tam tkwi bajkowego. Natychmiast przychodzi nam na myśl Ruchomy zamek Hauru. Atlas nie jest do niego bezpośrednim nawiązaniem, ale funkcjonuje w tej samej emocjonalnej i wizualnej przestrzeni - mitycznej, mechanicznej, trochę zmęczonej i trochę magicznej. Zakochujemy się w tej instalacji od pierwszego spojrzenia.

We then head inside to Turbine Hall A, where we find a bespoke installation created exclusively for the festival and inspired by the aurora borealis. It is Aurora by James Glancy Design. Reflective tapes and strings of light form a structure that mimics the feeling of northern skies, playing with gradients and movement to evoke an atmospheric, immersive experience.

Wchodzimy do środka i idziemy do Turbine Hall A, gdzie czeka instalacja stworzona specjalnie na potrzeby festiwalu i inspirowana zorzą polarną. To Aurora stworzona przez James Glancy Design. Odbijające światło taśmy i świetlne nici układają się w formę przywołującą północne niebo, bawiąc się gradientami i ruchem. Efekt jest niezwykle atmosferyczny i wciągający.

Turbine Hall B features Spider by Groupe LAPS. This installation is made up of 80 smaller illuminated spiders that combine into a larger form over two metres wide. We also pause in front of a nearby gallery to admire some wonderfully wild paintings of jungle animals. After passing a Valentine’s Day–themed display and snapping a quick photo, we head back out.

W Turbine Hall B znajduje się Spider autorstwa grupy LAPS. Instalacja składa się z 80 mniejszych, podświetlonych pająków, które razem tworzą jedną, ponad dwumetrową formę. Na chwilę zatrzymujemy się też przy pobliskiej galerii, żeby popatrzeć na szalone obrazy przedstawiające zwierzęta z dżungli. Mijamy walentynkową aranżację, robimy szybkie zdjęcie i wychodzimy z budynku.

The light is slowly fading, but it is still a little too bright to visit the main installation. So we retrace our steps and discover Never Ends by Luigi Console and Valentina Novembre. This interactive installation features a horse on a spring. As the horse moves, lights around the structure activate, bathing the scene in colour and motion. You need a bit of balance to ride it, and trying it out is a truly delightful experience.

Światło dnia powoli przygasa, ale jest jeszcze trochę za jasno na główną instalację. Wracamy więc kawałek, żeby znaleźć Never Ends autorstwa Luigiego Console i Valentiny Novembre. To interaktywna instalacja przedstawiająca konia na sprężynie. Kiedy koń się porusza, wokół aktywują się światła. Zachować równowagi na tym koniu wcale nie jest takie proste, ale zabawę mamy przednią.

Next is Tornado by UxU Studio, a striking sculpture depicting a twisting vortex of metal and light.

Kolejna instalacja to Tornado studia UxU - efektowna rzeźba przedstawiająca skręcony wir metalu i światła.

And then we enter the Powerhouse once again, grab some ice cream, and exit through the riverside entrance. Here we find In Bloom by Kumquat Lab - an interactive light sculpture inspired by plant pollination. It features ten luminous spheres representing flowers. As you pass your hand in front of a sphere, the installation responds with changes in light and sound.

Jest już wystarczająco ciemno, więc znów wchodzimy do Powerhouse, kupujemy lody i wychodzimy po drugiej stronie, wejściem od rzeki. Tam czeka In Bloom autorstwa Kumquat Lab -  interaktywna instalacja inspirowana zapylaniem roślin. Składa się z dziesięciu świetlnych kul symbolizujących kwiaty. Gdy przesuwasz dłoń przed jedną z nich, instalacja reaguje światłem i dźwiękiem.

Possibly the most important installation of the festival, Parabolic Lightcloud by Amigo & Amigo consists of over 1,000 individual lights, carefully choreographed through colour and pattern transitions. Different lighting sequences create distinct atmospheric impressions.

Być może najważniejsza instalacja całego festiwalu, Parabolic Lightcloud autorstwa Amigo & Amigo, składa się z ponad tysiąca pojedynczych świateł, starannie zaprogramowanych w zmieniające się sekwencje kolorów i wzorów. Każda z nich tworzy zupełnie inną atmosferę.

From here, we move on to the final installation: Spin Me a Yarn by Studio Vertigo - a giant illuminated ball of yarn. It glows in red, bringing the evening to a perfect close. We are cold, and hungry, and it is time for dinner.

Na sam koniec odwiedzamy Spin Me a Yarn studia Vertigo - ogromny, podświetlony kłębek wełny. Włóczka świeci na czerwono i różowo. I tak oto ta instalacja idealnie zamyka ten wieczór. Jest nam już zimno, jesteśmy głodni i najwyższy czas na kolację.

Next, we find ourselves traversing the Chancellor Passage, where we stop for a moment at the permanent installation bit.fall by Julius Popp from Germany. This artwork (featured in my blog in 2024) is made of a cascading display of words, formed by thousands of precisely timed falling water droplets.

Następnie przechodzimy przez Chancellor Passage, gdzie zatrzymujemy się na chwilę przy stałej instalacji bit.fall autorstwa Juliusa Poppa z Niemiec. Ta praca (która znajdziecie już na na moim blogu w opisie festiwalu z zeszłego roku) składa się z kaskadowego pokazu słów, uformowanych przez tysiące precyzyjnie zsynchronizowanych spadających kropel wody.

Our exploration continues past "The Clew," a structure of 100 red lights encircling the Cubitt Steps Bridge (see also my previous year entry).

Kontynuując naszą trasę mijamy teraz „The Clew”, konstrukcję składającą się ze 100 czerwonych świateł otaczających Cubitt Steps Bridge (zobacz także mój wpis z zeszłego roku).

We then arrive at the Mackenzie Walk to view Aj Vana Be. This installation, crafted from 32 stacked bathtubs salvaged from socialist-era high-rise apartments, powerfully underscores the urgent need for water conservation.

Następnie docieramy do Mackenzie Walk, aby zobaczyć Aj Vana Be. Ta instalacja, wykonana z 32 wanien ustawionych jedna na drugiej, odzyskanych z apartamentowców z czasów socjalizmu, podkreśla pilną potrzebę oszczędzania wody.

At Riverside Circa, another light installation beautifully visualizes circadian and circannual rhythms. Each of the twelve light fixtures corresponds to the average light level for a specific month of the year, reflecting seasonal changes. On the other side there is a line of sparkling Christmas trees.(see the video clip as no pictures). On the other side there is a line of sparkling Christmas trees.

W Riverside Circa kolejna instalacja świetlna wizualizuje rytmy dobowe i okołoroczne. Każda z dwunastu opraw świetlnych odpowiada tu średniemu poziomowi światła w konkretnym miesiącu w roku, odzwierciedlając zmiany sezonowe (stąd jest tylko video). A po drugiej stronie ciągnie się linia świecących na złoto świątecznych choinek.

Westferry Circus consistently hosts impressive installations, and this year is no exception. "Error" by Vendel & de Wolf from the Netherlands takes center stage. Inspired by the role of errors in DNA and mutations in natural selection, "Error" is an abstract piece connecting universal randomness to technological chance.

Westferry Circus niezmiennie jest miejscem imponujących instalacji i ten rok nie jest wyjątkiem. Centralne miejsce zajmuje tu „Error”  firmy Vendel & de Wolf z Holandii. Zainspirowany rolą błędów w DNA i mutacjami w doborze naturalnym, „Error” jest abstrakcyjnym dziełem, opowiadającym o uniwersalnej i technologicznej przypadkowości.

In Columbus Courtyard, we find the "Wave" by the British Squidsoup collective. Approximately five hundred suspended orbs create the illusion of a breaking ocean wave.

Na Columbus Courtyard znajdujemy „Wave” autorstwa brytyjskiego kolektywu Squidsoup. Około pięćset zawieszonych kul tworzy tu iluzję rozbijającej się fali oceanicznej.

On Wren Landing, "Stitching Light," a collaboration between British and Bangladeshi artists, presents a poignant narrative. Utilizing traditional Bangladeshi materials like saris and jute, along with illuminated thread, the artwork shares the real-life stories of Bangladeshi women who have migrated to England.

Na Wren Landing „Stitching Light”, współpraca brytyjskich i bangladeskich artystów, przedstawia poruszającą opowieść. Wykorzystując tradycyjne bangladeskie materiały, takie jak sari i juta, a także iluminowane nici, ta instalacja opowiada prawdziwe historie kobiet które wyemigrowały z Bangladeszu do ​​Anglii.

Finally, in Cabot Square, the "Evanescent Droplets" by Atelier Sisu (Australia and Peru) tries to capture the fleeting nature of existence through the form of the soap bubble.

Na koniec, na Cabot Square, „Evanescent Droplets” autorstwa Atelier Sisu (Australia i Peru) próbuje uchwycic ulotną naturę bytu poprzez formę bańki mydlanej.

Winter Lights 2025 part 1

Canary Wharf’s Winter Lights festival makes its much-anticipated return to London for its ninth year. This year's trail features 12 impressive temporary installations alongside the well-loved permanent light artworks.

We begin our exploration with Artificial Humans, an installation by Atelier Haute Cuisine from Belgium, located between Adam’s Plaza and the Crossrail Place roof. Developed with the assistance of AI (DALL-E), this piece portrays figures hunched over their something, seemingly their mobiles  (although mobiles are not explicitly presented) - a commentary on modern life. Despite the figures being glowing with a warm light, they carry a sense of detachment, reflecting the emotional disconnect often seen in today’s society.

Po raz dziewiąty powraca do Londynu Festiwal „Winter Lights” w Canary Wharf. Tegoroczna trasa obejmuje 12 imponujących tymczasowych instalacji obok permanentnych espozycji sztuki świetlnej.

Naszą wizytę rozpoczynamy od Artificial Humans, instalacji autorstwa Atelier Haute Cuisine z Belgii, znajdującej się między Adam’s Plaza a dachem Crossrail Place. Zaprojektowana przez AI (DALL-E) praca przedstawia postaci ludzi pochylonych nad czymś, prawdopodobnie telefonami (choć telefony nie są same w sonie widoczne)  i jest komentarzem do współczesnego życia. Pomimo że postacie świecą ciepłym światłem, wydają się być odizolowane i emocjonalnie niedostępne.  

We then traverse Canary Wharf in the fading pre-sunset light, on our way towards Union Square. Along Bellmouth Passage at Crossrail Place Quayside, we discover vibrant new murals created by UK-based female artists for the Global Street Art’s London Mural Festival.  

Następnie w słabnącym świetle dnia przemierzamy Canary Wharf, kierując się do Union Square. Wzdłuż Bellmouth Passage w Crossrail Place Quayside odkrywamy nowe murale stworzone przez artystki z Wielkiej Brytanii z okazji London Mural Festival organizowanego przez Global Street Art.

At Union Square, we admire Portal by Lucid Creates, a monumental public art installation that stands 13 meters tall. The interior is lined with shifting, diffused LEDs, and the exterior covered withs mirrors seamlessly blends into the cityscape leaving visitors momentarily unsure of what is tangible and what is merely a reflection.

Na Union Square podziwiamy Portal autorstwa Lucid Creates, monumentalną publiczną instalację o wysokości 13 metrów. Wnętrze jest wyłożone diodami LED świecącymi zmieniającym się rozproszonym światłem, a zewnętrzna część instalacji, pokryta lustrami idealnie wtapia się w miejski krajobraz, pozostawiając zwiedzających na chwilę w niepewności, czy to, na co akurat patrzą jest realne, czy jest jedynie odbiciem.

Just around the corner on Water Street, we come across a giant bird installation by Luminariste. It is composed of 64 sections of fluorescent tubes, and the light sequences are modelled on birds in various phases of flight This piece quickly becomes one of my favourites.

Tuż obok, na Water Street natrafiamy na gigantyczną instalację przedstawiającą ptaki autorstwa Luminariste. Składa się ona z 64 sekcji świetlówek, a sekwencje świetlne są wzorowane na różnych fazach ptasiego lotu. Ta praca szybko staje się jedną z naszych ulubionych.

 Feeling hungry, we head to a street food corner of the festival to indulge in some burritos and doughnut “hot dogs.”

Zdecydowanie zgłodnieliśmy, więc udajemy się do rejonu festiwalu z jedzeniem ulicznym, gdzie pożeramy burrito i pączkowe „hot dogi”.

As darkness settles in, we head to Montgomery Square to see Mirage by Atelier Sisu (the artists are from Australia and Peru). Mirage is a large installation that examines the impact of social media on our perception of reality.

Gdy mrok się pogłębia, udajemy się na Montgomery Square, aby zobaczyć Mirage autorstwa Atelier Sisu (artyści pochodzą z Australii i Peru). Mirage to duża instalacja, która ma skłaniać do refleksji nad wpływem mediów społecznościowych na nasze postrzeganie rzeczywistości.

In contrast, Positive Spin at Jubilee Place fails to capture our attention, especially due to the crowd. This 5.5-meter-high structure, inspired by beachfront arcades, appeared to engage the children more than the adults.

The Eden Dock was also congested, but this time we chose to brave the crowds in order to see the Illusion Hole by UxU studio from Taiwan. Its precise and geometric arrangements create a captivating effect, as if light is being channelled into a swirling black hole on the water.

Natomiast Positive Spin w Jubilee Place nie przykuwa naszej uwagi, być może z powodu tłumu. Ta 5,5-metrowa konstrukcja, inspirowana grami z nadmorskich pasaży, wydawała się bardziej angażować dzieci niż dorosłych.

 Eden Dock również był zatłoczony, ale tym razem postanowiliśmy stawić czoła tłumom, aby zobaczyć Illusion Hole studia UxU z Tajwanu. Precyzyjny geometryczny układ tej instalacji tworzy efekt, jakby światło było kierowane do wirującej czarnej dziury na wodzie.

Hillier Garden Light Up Trail

Last Thursday, the Light Up Trail opened at Hillier Gardens in Romsey, and we chose it as our official inauguration of the festive season this year.

The trail begins with a real sense of drama: a beautiful arched, multicoloured tunnel leads into a magical display of oversized illuminated creatures, a giant bauble you can step inside, and the word Christmas spelled out in enormous glowing letters.

W zeszły czwartek rozpoczął się „Light Up Trail” w Hillier Gardens w Romsey i właśnie tam postanowiliśmy rozpocząć nasz sezon świąteczny w tym roku.

Trasa zaczyna się bardzo efektownie - przechodzimy przez piękny, wielobarwny tunel świetlny w kształcie łuku, który wprowadza nas do bajkowej scenerii z ogromnymi, podświetlanymi reniferami, choinkami i gigantyczną bombką, do której można wejść, oraz napisem Christmas ułożonym z wielkich, świecących liter.

Further along, we came across a meadow dotted with giant baubles, each featuring charming children’s designs projected onto their surfaces. This was followed by a section of beautifully lit trees - some adorned with glowing “chandeliers,” others animated with projections of Christmas trees across their silhouettes.

Idąc dalej, trafiamy na polanę z wielkimi bombkami ozdobionymi dziecięcymi rysunkami. Następnie przechodzimy obok pięknie oświetlonych drzew - niektóre z nich udekorowano świetlnymi „żyrandolami”, inne ożywają dzięki projekcjom świątecznie ustrojonych choinek.

One of the highlights of this light path was a long field of illuminated tulips, glowing softly against the darkness, followed by a cluster of giant egg-like structures that slowly changed colours. Around the next corner, we found ourselves surrounded by vibrant neon flowers and butterflies, creating a wonderfully immersive scene.

Jednym z najciekawszych fragmentów trasy było długie pole świecących tulipanów, wyglądające spektakularnie po zmroku. Za nimi trafiliśmy na ogromne instalacje przypominające jajka, powoli zmieniające kolory. Zaś za kolejnym zakrętem otaczyły nas intensywnie świecące neonowe kwiaty i motyle, tworząc bardzo wciągającą, niemal bajkową scenerię.

At the ponds, we stopped to admire the Symphony of Light – a mesmerising light and sound show featuring laser beams reflected in the water, drifting mist, and atmospheric music that brought the whole area to life.

Przy stawach zatrzymujemy się na dłużej, by obejrzeć Symfonię Światła - pokaz światła i dźwięku, z laserami odbijającymi się w tafli wody, unoszącą się mgłą i klimatyczną muzyką.

We then walked along the Magic Footpath, where interactive projections beneath our feet caused flowers to “explode” with every step. We also couldn’t resist the walk-on pianos -light-up installations where jumping on the keys triggered changing colours and playful musical notes.

Throughout the trail, there were plenty of reindeer and festive decorations adding to the seasonal charm. About halfway through, we reached a Christmas market and festive food and drink area, where we stopped to refuel with a German grilled sausage and some freshly made churros - an excellent mid-trail treat.

Kolejnym punktem jest magiczna ścieżka  - odcinek drogi z projekcjami na ziemi, gdzie pod naszymi stopami „wybuchają” kolorowe kwiaty. Nie omijamy też interaktywnych fortepianów: podświetlanych instalacji, po których można skakać, a klawisze reagują dźwiękiem i zmieniającymi się kolorami.

Na całej trasie nie brakuje reniferów i świątecznych dekoracji, które konsekwentnie budują bożonarodzeniowy klimat. Mniej więcej w połowie spaceru był też jarmark świąteczny z jedzeniem i napojami. Zatrzymaliśmy się tam na niemiecką grillowaną kiełbaskę i churrosy  - idealna przerwa na rozgrzanie się i złapanie oddechu.

Battersea Light Festival - part 3

As the daylight finally starts to fade, we make our way to the north entrance of the mall. Here, we admire our favourite installation of the festival - Singularity. This artwork alludes to the concept of singularity in mathematics and physics, representing a point of extreme variability where ordinary rules no longer hold sway. It symbolizes change, transition, and unpredictability.

Gdy światło dzienne zaczyna słabnąć, kierujemy się do północnego wejścia galerii. Tutaj podziwiamy naszą ulubioną instalację festiwalu – Singularity. Ta instalacja nawiązuje do koncepcji osobliwości w matematyce i fizyce, przedstawiając punkt skrajnej zmienności, w którym zwykłe zasady nie mają już znaczenia. Symbolizuje zatem zmiany i nieprzewidywalność.

Its bursts of changing lights are visible even from the Coaling Jetty, a historically significant Grade II*-listed jetty situated on the River Thames opposite Battersea Power Station.

Błyski jej zmieniających się świateł są widoczne nawet z Coaling Jetty, ważnego z historycznego punktu widzenia molo, wpisanego na listę zabytków II stopnia*, położonego nad Tamizą, naprzeciwko elektrowni Battersea.

A bit further on in Circus West Village, we come across the enchanting Butterfly Effect. This mesmerizing light installation features six immense butterflies delicately perched on the water's surface.

Nieco dalej, w Circus West Village, natrafiamy na czarujący Butterfy Effect. Ta hipnotyzująca instalacja świetlna przedstawia sześć ogromnych motyli delikatnie osadzonych na powierzchni wody.

Here we also meet LED wings ballerinas.

Tutaj oglądamy także popisy baletnic ze skrzyłami podświetlanymi diodami.

We then go back yet again to the Electric Boulevard to watch the led hoop majorettes.

Następnie wracamy po raz kolejny na Electric Boulevard, aby obejrzeć występy z podświetlanymi hola-hoopami.

On the upper ground level of the boulevard, there are the Cloudy Lanterns, an art installation with floating geometric “trees” that constantly change colours.

Na górnym poziomie ulicy znajdują się Cloudy Lanterns, instalacja artystyczna z geometrycznymi „drzewami”, które stale zmieniają kolory.

And suddenly it is rather late, so we run back to catch the train back home.

I nagle jest już dość późno, więc biegniemy z powrotem, żeby złapać pociąg do domu.
