Pickled Frog

Before heading to the Salisbury cathedral show today, we decided to grab a bite at Pickled Frog, a cosy restaurant set in a building that dates back to around 1420. It's got that charming, timber-framed feel typical of Market Square corner tenements. The roof is mostly original, 95% to be exact, the first floor is about 60% original, but sadly, just 10% of the ground floor remains from the old days.

Zanim udaliśmy się dzisiaj na pokazy w katedrze, postanowiliśmy wpaść na obiad do Pickled Frog, przytulnej restauracji mieszczącej się w budynku pochodzącym z około 1420 roku. Budynek ten jest wpisany na listę zabytków Salisbury. Dach jest w większości (95%) oryginalny, pierwsze piętro jest oryginalne w około 60%, ale niestety, tylko 10% parteru pozostało z dawnych czasów.

For starters, we went with some tapas—mozzarella sticks, jalapeño flammers, and vegetable spring rolls. For the main course, I opted for the mussels in white wine cream sauce, while Marcin chose a classic burger. The food was very decent. We rounded off the meal with hot chocolate and coffee, and then it was time to make our way to the cathedral.

Jako startery wybraliśmy tapas — paluszki mozzarelli, flammers z jalapeño i sajgonki warzywne. Jako danie główne ja wzięłam małże w sosie śmietanowym z białego wina, a Marcin klasycznego burgera. Jedzenie było bardzo przyzwoite. Zakończyliśmy posiłek gorącą czekoladą (ja) i kawą (M), a potem nadszedł czas, aby udać się do katedry.

EL&N Wardour Street

We are meeting my friend Jen today, so we decided to have our lunch in the same café EL&N at Wardour Street. It turns out to be very busy today but we are lucky and after 10-15 minutes of waiting we land at the table for four.

​Spotykamy się dzisiaj z moją koleżanką, Jen, więc postanowiliśmy zjeść lunch w tej samej kawiarni - E&L przy Wardour Street. Okazuje się, że dzisiaj jest bardzo tłoczno, ale mamy szczęście i już po 10-15 minutach oczekiwania lądujemy przy stoliku dla czterech osób.

We order truffle cacio e pepe and Dutch baby pancakes, which are delicious. My matcha is also great if surprisingly bitter. Marcin makes up for it with his very sweet latte.

Zamawiamy truflowe cacio e pepe i holenderskie mini naleśniki i wszystko jest pyszne. Moja matcha jest również świetna, choć zaskakująco gorzka. Marcin nadrabia to bardzo słodką latte.

And then Jen and her daughter join us, and the cake bonanza begins. We make a selection of some traditional ones and some Halloween specials. Yes, it definitely is a serious sugar overload…

A potem dołączają do nas Jen i jej córka i zaczyna się ciastkowa bonanza. Łączymy tradycyjne ciastka z kilkoma z oferty Halloween. Tak, to popołudnie to zdecydowanie krok w stronę insulinooporności…

Latent Spaces part 3

The last room that we visit is the Complexity Space. In this room animations of imagined alien environments (and cute creatures) are projected onto 360-degree screens.  It takes us a while to see it all and then we are totally ready for lunch.

Ostatnim pomieszczeniem, które odwiedzamy jest Przestrzeń Złożoności. W tym pokoju animacje wyobrażonych obcych środowisk (i uroczych stworzeń) są wyświetlane na ekranach 360 stopni. Zobaczenie wszystkiego zajmuje nam trochę czasu, a potem jesteśmy już naprawdę gotowi na lunch.

Latent Spaces part 2

Through a narrow corridor where complicated images are projected on the floor and visitors, so that once again a visitor becomes a part of the exhibition, we go to the Agent Space.

Przez wąski korytarz, w którym na podłogę i zwiedzających wyświetlane są skomplikowane obrazy, dzięki czemu zwiedzający po raz kolejny staje się częścią wystawy, trafiamy do Przestrzeni Sprawczej.

 Agent Space is focused on the anthropomorphising of AI. Various renditions of human-like creatures but with a hint of a cyborg represent different faces of artificial intelligence.

Przestrzeń Sprawcza koncentruje się na antropomorfizacji sztucznej inteligencji. Różne wersje humanoidalnych twarzy reprezentują możliwe oblicza sztucznej inteligencji.

The next chamber is called Breathing Space. The interpretation of this room is a bit vague for us. We sit in a dark room that represents a cave and watch some cute creatures. They are a bit manga-like and pleasant for the eyes.

Następna sala nazywa się Przestrzenią Oddechową. Interpretacja tego pomieszczenia jest dla nas trochę niejasna. Siedzimy w ciemnym pokoju przypominającym jaskinię i obserwujemy przyjemne dla oczu mangopodobne stworzenia.

Kyoto Kitchen with friends

We are back at the Kyoto Kitchen in Winchester today, but this time with friends. The restaurant will move to a different place soon (but still in Winchester), so this is the last opportunity to enjoy their tasting menu in the current place. Food is as good as always, a bit of an adventure for friends who are not used to sushi or raw meats. But there is also tempura, teriyaki salmon, teriyaki chicken, and sweets, so they seem OK with the dinner. Or so I hope.

Dziś odwiedzamy po raz kolejny Kyoto Kitchen w Winchester, ale tym razem z przyjaciółmi. Restauracja wkrótce przeniesie się w inne miejsce (nadal w Winchester), więc to ostatnia okazja, by cieszyć się ich menu degustacyjnym w dotychczasowej lokacji. Jedzenie jest jak zawsze pyszne. Trochę może jest to wyzwanie dla przyjaciół, którzy nie są przyzwyczajeni do sushi lub surowego mięsa. Ale jest też tempura, łosoś teriyaki, kurczak teriyaki i desery, więc mam nadzieje, że generalnie im smakowało.
