Gueliz

Gueliz, the modern district of Marrakech, offers a refreshing contrast to the traditional charm of the historic Medina. Gueliz, nowoczesna dzielnica Marrakeszu, oferuje przyjemny kontrast z tradycyjnym urokiem historycznej Mediny. Założona w okresie francuskiego protektoratu na początku XX wieku, ta tętniąca życiem dzielnica charakteryzuje się współczesną architekturą, szerokimi bulwarami i gwarną atmosferą.

To, co czyni Gueliz naprawdę wyjątkowym miejscem, to zdolność do płynnego połączenia starego z nowym. Podczas gdy Medina odzwierciedla historię i tradycję Maroka, Gueliz ucieleśnia ducha nowoczesnego Marrakeszu, który obejmuje zmiany i kreatywność. Jest to znak ewoluującej tożsamości Marrakeszu.

One of the highlights of Gueliz is the lively Place du 16 Novembre, a central square that serves as a focal point for locals and visitors alike. This energetic area is surrounded by shops, markets, and palm trees, inviting you to relax and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. As the sun sets, Place du 16 Novembre transforms into a social hub, alive with the buzz of conversation and laughter.

Jedną z atrakcji Gueliz jest tętniący życiem Place du 16 Novembre, centralny plac, który jest punktem centralnym dla mieszkańców i turystów. Ta pełna energii (i sklepów) okolica jest palmami, a kiedy słońce zachodzi, Place du 16 Novembre przekształca się w centrum towarzyskie miasta.

Cooling down

It is an especially hot day today, even for Marrakesh, so after our visit to the Gueliz we decided to cool down in the plunge pool on the roof. The benefit of a small riad is that there is a huge chance you will have facilities all to yourself. Today is no exception. It is just us and birds, and muezzins’ call for prayer from the mosques nearby.

Dziś jest wyjątkowo gorący dzień, nawet jak na Marrakesz, więc po wizycie w Gueliz postanowiliśmy ochłodzić się w basenie na dachu. Jedną z zalet małego riadu jest to, że istnieje ogromna szansa, iż będziesz mieć miejsca publiczne tylko dla siebie. I dzisiaj nie ma pod tym względem wyjątku. Na tarasie jesteśmy tylko my, i slychać jedynie ptaki i wołanie muezinów zapraszające do modlitwy.

An attempt to use feet as a tripod was not exactly a success.

Próba użycia stóp jako statywu, niestety nie zakończyła się sukcesem.

Grand Cafe de la Poste

After visiting the gardens and the museum we are heading to the Grand Café de la Poste, where we will have our lunch. It is not far away but the sun is relentless. When we arrive, they offer us a table in the garden, but we prefer to hide from the heat inside.

Po wizycie w ogrodach i muzeum idziemy na lunch do Grand Café de la Poste. Nie mamy daleko, ale słońce jest wysoko i grzeje niemiłosiernie. Kiedy się wreszcie doczłapaliśmy, oferują nam stolik w ogrodzie. Nah. Zdecydwanie wolimy ukryć się przed upałem w środku.

As the name implies, this building used to be the main post office hosting a café (built around 1925 during the French protectorate, supposedly as the first building in the Guéliz) and the interior still features beautiful colonial-style decor. Upon entering the building, you are faced with a dramatic double staircase.  The room is low-lit, and spacious, with black and white tiled floors, beam ceiling, comfortable leather sofas and armchairs, and potted palms scattered around.

Jak sama nazwa wskazuje, w tym budynku mieściła się kiedyś główna poczta, w której znajdowała się kawiarnia. (Poczta była zbudowana około 1925 roku podczas francuskiego protektoratu, rzekomo jako pierwszy budynek w Guéliz). Wnętrze nadal charakteryzuje się pięknym wystrojem w stylu kolonialnym. Po wejściu do budynku naszym oczom ukazują się imponujące, podwójne schody. Pomieszczenie jest słabo oświetlone, za to przestronne, ma podłogi wyłożone czarno-białymi kaflami, widoczne belki stropowe, wygodne skórzane sofy i fotele oraz porozstawiane wszędzie  palmy w doniczkach.

The menu at le Grand Café is said to resemble that of a classic French brasserie but with a nod to Moroccan flavours. We order some oysters, spaghetti Bolognese for me, sea food for Marcin and cheesecake to finish. The food is good, but the price is a bit too steep for what it is. Still, we enjoyed the lunch and now we just dream about dolce far niente.

Menu le Grand Café przypomina klasyczną francuską brasserie, ale z ukłonem w stronę marokańskich smaków. Zamawiamy ostrygi, dla mnie spaghetti bolońskie, owoce morza dla Marcina i na koniec sernik. Jedzenie jest dobre, ale mimo wszystko cena jest bardzo wysoka w odniesieniu do jakości. Mimo to lunch nam się podobał i teraz marzymy tylko o dolce far niente.

YSL Musem

Few steps away from the gardens we find Yves Saint Laurent’s Museum, featuring some of his dresses, drawings, and movies about the designer. As much as I like YSL, the highlight of this place was for me the building itself. Toned-down ocher and brick colours contrast beautifully with bright hues of tinted-glass windows, whilst cubic shapes are connected by sweeping curves.

Pięć minut od ogrodów spacerkiem znajduje się Muzeum YSL, w którym można zobaczyć niektóre kreacje, szkice oraz filmy o tym projektancie mody. O ile lubię YSL, o tyle największą atrakcją tego miejsca był dla mnie sam budynek. Stonowane barwy ochry i cegły pięknie kontrastują z nasyconymi kolorami okiennych szyb, a sześcienne kształty łączą zamaszyste łuki.

There is also a nice café inside, with a patio containing soe greenery and a swimming pool. Obviously, we use the opportunity to rehydrate (the juices here are above average tasty).

Wewnątrz znajduje się również przyjemna kawiarnia z patio pełnym zieleni i basenem. Oczywiście korzystamy z okazji, aby się nawodnić (soki tutaj są ponadprzeciętne smaczne).

Majorelle Blue

Jarden Majorelle was bought in 1984 by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge after its previous owner,  French landscape painter Jacques Majorelle, died in a car accident. The famous fashion designer’s goal was to protect this place from deterioration.

Majorelle created this beautiful botanical garden inspired by the Arab Islamic gardens around his villa and workshop. The villa, an iconic Majorelle Art Deco house, is painted in cobalt blue with a few splashes of bright yellow.

Jarden Majorelle został kupiony w 1984 roku przez Yvesa Saint Laurenta i Pierre'a Berge po tym, jak jego wcześniejszy właściciel, francuski malarz pejzażysta Jacques Majorelle, zginął w wypadku samochodowym. Celem słynnego projektanta mody było zabezpieczenie tego miejsca przed zniszczeniem.

Majorelle stworzył ten piękny botaniczny ogród inspirowany arabskimi ogrodami islamskimi wokół swojej willi i warsztatu. Kultowy dzisiaj budynek willi Art Deco, jest pomalowany na odważny kobaltowy kolor z kilkoma plamami intensywnej żółci.

The garden is centred around a water basin, and it contains three hundred and fifty plant species brought from the five continents, including cacti, hibiscus, cypresses, palm trees, geranium, weeping willows, bamboo, water lilies, bougainvillaea, and ferns. It is divided by four main walkways that cross each other. Every turning, every spot here is a photographer’s dream with vibrant pops of magenta, blue, green, yellow, and dark orange dominating the palette.

Ogród zawiera trzysta pięćdziesiąt gatunków roślin sprowadzonych z pięciu kontynentów, w tym kaktusy, hibiskusy, cyprysy, palmy, pelargonie, wierzby płaczące, bambusy, bugenwille i paprocie, a także staw z liliami wodnymi.  Cały teren jest podzielony czterema głównymi alejkami przecinającymi się ze sobą. Każdy zakręt, każdy kąt tutaj to raj dla fotografa, z akcentami magenty, niebieskiego, zileni, żółci i ciemnego pomarańczu dominującymi w palecie barw.

After Yves Saint Laurent passed away in 2008, his memorial was built in the garden.

Po śmierci Yvesa Saint Laurenta w 2008 roku w ogrodzie zbudowano pomnik poświęcony jego pamięci.

After visiting a small art gallery and gift shop we pop into the courtyard café to taste the local chocolate pancakes.

Po wizycie w małej galerii sztuki i sklepie z pamiątkami wpadamy jeszcze do kawiarni na dziedzińcu, aby spróbować lokalnych czekoladowych naleśników.
