The Tower Hotel and The Anchor pub

Due to some mistakes with hotel booking (the calendar is still too tricky for Marcin ;)), we have a room booked in the Tower hotel tonight. Work was busy today for both of us, so we arrived in London rather late. We drive straight to the hotel and check-in. The room is relatively modest, but the location is excellent – just in front of the Tower Bridge.

W związku z pewnymi błędami przy rezerwacji hotelu na spotkanie firmowe (kalendarz jest wciąż zbyt trudny dla Marcina ;)), mamy zarezerwowany na dzisiaj pokój w hotelu Tower. Oboje mieliśmy akurat urwanie gwizdka w pracy, więc do Londynu przyjechaliśmy dość późno. Jedziemy więc prosto do hotelu, żeby zrobić check-in. Pokój jest stosunkowo skromny, ale lokalizacja świetna – tuż przed Tower Bridge.

It is a bit too late for pictures, the sky is already black, without a hint of blue, but we still take some strolling across the bridge and then down the river on the south bank. It takes us less than half an hour to get to The Anchor, where we decided to have dinner tonight.

Trochę już za późno na zdjęcia, niebo jest już czarne, bez śladu koloru, ale i tak je robimy idąc przez most, a potem wzdłuż rzeki południowym brzegiem. Niecałe pół godziny zajmuje nam dotarcie do pubu The Anchor, gdzie postanowiliśmy zjeść dziś kolację.

The Anchor is one of the iconic pubs of London. It was built in the XVIII century in a place of a previous pub that was there for a few hundred years. Some records claim that William Shakespeare used to drink here. The interior is very traditional, with wood, exposed brick walls and a fireplace. The food is average, to be honest, but we did not go to be hungry.

The Anchor to jeden z kultowych pubów w Londynie. Został zbudowany w XVIII wieku w miejscu wcześniejszej gospody, która istniała tam przez kilkaset lat. Niektóre źródła podają, że pił tu sam William Shakespeare. Wnętrze jest bardzo tradycyjne, z dominującym drewnem, odsłoniętymi ścianami z cegły i kominkiem. Szczerze mówiąc, jedzenie jest raczej średnie, ale nie głodni nie wyszliśmy.

DDP

Our next stop is the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) or if you prefer Dream, Design, and Play. It is a bold landmark of Seoul, and a cultural hub of the city, designed by world-renowned architect - Zaha Hadid - in a neo-futuristic style. One of Hadid’s nicknames is “the Queen of the Curve”, and that does not require further explanation if you scroll through the gallery below. I feel like I landed on some far-away space station, where everything is strange and beautiful, and a mothership made from organic bioluminescent metal (sounds like a contradiction? Well, the future is not so simple) is docked in the centre. Today's short visit here is just the first of many to come in the future because I already love the place…

Naszym następnym przystankiem jest Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) lub jeśli ktoś woli Dream, Design i Play. To miejsce jest ikonicznym punktem orientacyjnym Seulu i kulturalnym centrum miasta, zaprojektowanym przez światowej sławy architektkę - Zahę Hadid - w stylu neo-futurystycznym. Jeden z pseudonimów Hadid to „Królowa Krzywizn”, co nie wymaga dalszych wyjaśnień, jeśli ktoś by popatrzy na galerię poniżej. Czuję się, jakbym wylądowała na jakiejś odległej stacji kosmicznej, gdzie wszystko jest dziwne i piękne, a pośrodku zadokowany jest statek-matka z organicznego bioluminescencyjnego metalu (Brzmi jak sprzeczność? Cóż, przyszłość nie jest taka prosta)…  Dzisiejsza krótka wizyta tutaj jest tylko pierwszą z wielu, które pojawią się w przyszłości, ponieważ już wiem, że uwielbiam to miejsce…

Amore Pacific

Glass houses of Yongsan are so nice we decide to walk around for a while. And this is how we end up in front of the Amore Pacific headquarters. We have to come back here one day and explore the place thoroughly. Today we just play around the artsy fountain for a while  and then  take the subway to The Design Plaza.

Szklane domy w Yongsan są tak ładne, że postanawiamy chwilę pospacerować po okolicy. I tak lądujemy przed główną siedzibą Amore Pacific. Musimy tu kiedyś wrócić i dokładnie sobie tu wszystko obejrzeć, ale dzisiaj robimy tylko kilka zdjęć artystycznej fontanny i łapiemy metro do DDP.

Shopping mission

This morning we realised we had left a piece of (not too expensive) photography equipment back at home, so we started the day with a trip to the shopping mall. First, we visit the Lotte Department Store in Myeongdong. It is not far from our hotel, so we walk there, but even though the shopping mall is big, we do cannot find what we are looking for. Instead, we find the first locations for Seoul photography. The area is really beautiful, with some glassy skyscrapers and nice dots of greenery scattered around.

Dziś rano zdaliśmy sobie sprawę, że zostawiliśmy w domu (niezbyt drogi) element sprzętu fotograficznego, więc zaczynamy dzień wycieczką do centrum handlowego. Najpierw odwiedzamy Dom Towarowy Lotte w Myeongdong. Nie jest to daleko od naszego hotelu, więc idziemy tam na piechotę, ale mimo iż galeria handlowa jest duża, nie znajdujemy tam potrzebnej nam części. Zamiast tego znajdujemy natomiast pierwsze lokalizacje do fotografii Seulu. Okolica jest naprawdę piękna, z kilkoma wyróżniającymi się szklanymi drapaczami chmur i porozrzucanymi wokół piegami zieleni.

We have to tame the subway now but it turns out to be easy. However, before we leave it is time for a drink in one of the subway cafes.

Musimy teraz oswoić metro, ale okazuje się, że jest to łatwe. Zanim jednak ruszymy w dalszą drogę, pora na coś do picia w jednej z kawiarenek metra.

After visiting a few odd places, with no shopping success, we finally ended up at the Yongsan station. Here, in the big department store, we managed to buy everything we needed and as a bonus the place turned out to be really nice. Both, inside and outside of the building :). Obviously, we stopped for tea/coffee and cakes….

PS Restroom was quite interesting, too. Good thing that we exercise squats in the gym….

Po odwiedzeniu kilku dziwnych miejsc, bez sukcesów zakupowych, w końcu wylądowaliśmy na dworcu Jongsan. Tutaj, w dużym centrum handlowym, udało nam się kupić wszystko, czego potrzebowaliśmy, a jako stacja okazała się naprawdę ładna. Zarówno w środku jak i na zewnątrz budynku :). Oczywiście zatrzymaliśmy się też na herbatę/kawę i ciastka….

PS Toaleta także była dość interesująca. Całe szcęście, że jesteśmy przyzwyczajeni do przysiadów dzięki siłowni…

Evening stroll

By the time we are checked in to our hotel, it is rather late, so we go to the nearby restaurant for our dinner. We choose one a bit randomly, to be honest (just “pick the one that is full of locals”). They specialise in moon snail salad, and so we grab it, plus a Korean omelette and -as moon snail salad is supposed to be followed with alcohol – a glass (or two) of beer. Highlight of the evening - I order my beer in Korean!

Zanim zameldujemy się w naszym hotelu, jest już dość późno, więc na obiadokolację idziemy do pobliskiej restauracji. Wybieramy ją, szczerze mówiąc, trochę losowo (w myśl zasady dużo lokalesów to dobry znak).  I okazuje się, ze ta knajpka akurat specjalizują się w sałatce ze ślimaków księżycowych. To więc zamawiamy, do tego koreański omlet i – jako że morskie ślimaki lubią pływać– kufel (a niektórzy nawet dwa) piwa. Przy czym piwo zamawiam po koreańsku!

Then a short stroll around the hotel, sweets and ice-cream shopping in a local convenience store, and we are ready for bed.

Po obiedzie krótki spacer w pobliżu hotelu, zakupy słodyczy i lodów w lokalnym sklepie spożywczym i jesteśmy gotowi do snu.
