Let's talk more about the hotel...

“In the heart of Cusco, where the echoes of ancient Incan footsteps mingle with the vibrant pulse of contemporary life, there stands an accommodation known as the Hotel Plaza de Armas. To speak of this place is to invoke the sacred trinity of location, location, and location; for here, amidst the cobblestone veins of the city, one can feel the very spirit of history wrap around them like a cherished shawl woven from the threads of time.”

We could begin our story like this, but, seriously, this is without a doubt one of the best hotels on Cusco’s famous Plaza de Armas or Main Square. Owned by a local family, it is a vision of modern simplicity. Its rooms are light and airy with crisp white linen, good showers, desks, electric heaters and complimentary coca tea, bottled water and wifi.

The allure of this hotel extended far beyond its walls. The vibrant Plaza de Armas came alive every morning, offering a sensory feast from the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee to the laughter of children exercising every day in front of the cathedral for the fast approaching Sentimana Santa. It was impossible not to be swept up in the rhythm of the city, as cobblestone streets beckoned us to explore their hidden corners.

Plaza de Armas is also the gastronomic epicentre of the city so by staying here, we had access to a wide variety of restaurants offering authentic Peruvian cuisine.

Nie sposób jest nie dać się porwać rytmowi miasta, gdy brukowane uliczki zachęcają nas do eksploracji jego ukrytych zakątków.

Plaza de Armas jest także gastronomicznym centrum miasta, wiec dzięki temu, że tu mieszkamy, mamy natychmiastowy dostęp do mnóstwa restauracji oferujących autentyczne dania kuchni peruwiańskiej.

Apart from mentioned in my previous entry café balcony with its sweeping views on the plaza, the hotel has a lovely roof top terrace with one of the best views of the Main Square.

Oprócz wspomnianego we wcześniejszym wpisie balkonu kawiarnianego z rozległym widokiem na plac, hotel posiada także piękny taras na dachu z jednym z najlepszych widoków na Plaza de Armas.

Room and bar

The room is simple but nice, and we can just about see a cathedral from the window if we look to the side. For our Korean online lesson, I stay in the room and Marcin goes to the lounge, which is conveniently empty.

Pokój jest prosty, ale przyjemny, a z okna patrzeć mocno do boku można nawet zobaczyć katedrę. Na naszą lekcję koreańskiego online ja zostaję w pokoju, a Marcin idzie do hotelowego lounge’u, który jest wygodnie pusty.

After Korean we pop into the bar for a savoury snack, another cup of coca tea and hot chocolate. Here, hot chocolate is nothing like the sweet, sugary drinks we are accustomed to in Europe. Instead, it is rich with real cacao fat, offering a deeper, more profound taste with much less or no sugar at all.

Po koreańskim wpadamy do baru na przekąskę, kolejną filiżankę herbaty z koki i gorącą czekoladę. Gorąca czekolada nie przypomina tutaj słodkiego napoju, do którego jesteśmy przyzwyczajeni w Europie. Zamiast tego jest bogata w prawdziwy tłuszcz kakaowy, oferując głębszy, bardziej wyrazisty smak z dużo mniejszą ilością cukru lub nawet zupełnie bez cukru.

And we also discover the balcony. Oh, what a treat it is. The view is just perfect. From our perch, we can see the majestic cathedral, the stunning Jesuit church, and the bustling expanse of the Plaza de Armas below us.

I odkrywamy też balkon. Och, balkon jest fenomenalny. Możemy z niego podziwiać majestatyczną katedrę, wspaniały kościół jezuicki i tętniącą życiem przestrzeń całego Plaza de Armas.

Winter Lights 2025 part 1

Canary Wharf’s Winter Lights festival makes its much-anticipated return to London for its ninth year. This year's trail features 12 impressive temporary installations alongside the well-loved permanent light artworks.

We begin our exploration with Artificial Humans, an installation by Atelier Haute Cuisine from Belgium, located between Adam’s Plaza and the Crossrail Place roof. Developed with the assistance of AI (DALL-E), this piece portrays figures hunched over their something, seemingly their mobiles  (although mobiles are not explicitly presented) - a commentary on modern life. Despite the figures being glowing with a warm light, they carry a sense of detachment, reflecting the emotional disconnect often seen in today’s society.

Po raz dziewiąty powraca do Londynu Festiwal „Winter Lights” w Canary Wharf. Tegoroczna trasa obejmuje 12 imponujących tymczasowych instalacji obok permanentnych espozycji sztuki świetlnej.

Naszą wizytę rozpoczynamy od Artificial Humans, instalacji autorstwa Atelier Haute Cuisine z Belgii, znajdującej się między Adam’s Plaza a dachem Crossrail Place. We then traverse Canary Wharf in the fading pre-sunset light, on our way towards Union Square. Along Bellmouth Passage at Crossrail Place Quayside, we discover vibrant new murals created by UK-based female artists for the Global Street Art’s London Mural Festival.  

Następnie w słabnącym świetle dnia przemierzamy Canary Wharf, kierując się do Union Square. Wzdłuż Bellmouth Passage w Crossrail Place Quayside odkrywamy nowe murale stworzone przez artystki z Wielkiej Brytanii z okazji London Mural Festival organizowanego przez Global Street Art.

At Union Square, we admire Portal by Lucid Creates, a monumental public art installation that stands 13 meters tall. The interior is lined with shifting, diffused LEDs, and the exterior covered withs mirrors seamlessly blends into the cityscape leaving visitors momentarily unsure of what is tangible and what is merely a reflection.

Na Union Square podziwiamy Portal autorstwa Lucid Creates, monumentalną publiczną instalację o wysokości 13 metrów. Wnętrze jest wyłożone diodami LED świecącymi zmieniającym się rozproszonym światłem, a zewnętrzna część instalacji, pokryta lustrami idealnie wtapia się w miejski krajobraz, pozostawiając zwiedzających na chwilę w niepewności, czy to, na co akurat patrzą jest realne, czy jest jedynie odbiciem.

Just around the corner on Water Street, we come across a giant bird installation by Luminariste. It is composed of 64 sections of fluorescent tubes, and the light sequences are modelled on birds in various phases of flight This piece quickly becomes one of my favourites.

Tuż obok, na Water Street natrafiamy na gigantyczną instalację przedstawiającą ptaki autorstwa Luminariste. Składa się ona z 64 sekcji świetlówek, a sekwencje świetlne są wzorowane na różnych fazach ptasiego lotu. Ta praca szybko staje się jedną z naszych ulubionych.

 Feeling hungry, we head to a street food corner of the festival to indulge in some burritos and doughnut “hot dogs.”

Zdecydowanie zgłodnieliśmy, więc udajemy się do rejonu festiwalu z jedzeniem ulicznym, gdzie pożeramy burrito i pączkowe „hot dogi”.

As darkness settles in, we head to Montgomery Square to see Mirage by Atelier Sisu (the artists are from Australia and Peru). Mirage is a large installation that examines the impact of social media on our perception of reality.

Gdy mrok się pogłębia, udajemy się na Montgomery Square, aby zobaczyć Mirage autorstwa Atelier Sisu (artyści pochodzą z Australii i Peru). Mirage to duża instalacja, która ma skłaniać do refleksji nad wpływem mediów społecznościowych na nasze postrzeganie rzeczywistości.

In contrast, Positive Spin at Jubilee Place fails to capture our attention, especially due to the crowd. This 5.5-meter-high structure, inspired by beachfront arcades, appeared to engage the children more than the adults.

The Eden Dock was also congested, but this time we chose to brave the crowds in order to see the Illusion Hole by UxU studio from Taiwan. Its precise and geometric arrangements create a captivating effect, as if light is being channelled into a swirling black hole on the water.

Natomiast Positive Spin w Jubilee Place nie przykuwa naszej uwagi, być może z powodu tłumu. Ta 5,5-metrowa konstrukcja, inspirowana grami z nadmorskich pasaży, wydawała się bardziej angażować dzieci niż dorosłych.

 Eden Dock również był zatłoczony, ale tym razem postanowiliśmy stawić czoła tłumom, aby zobaczyć Illusion Hole studia UxU z Tajwanu. Precyzyjny geometryczny układ tej instalacji tworzy efekt, jakby światło było kierowane do wirującej czarnej dziury na wodzie.

Battersea Light Festival - part 3

As the daylight finally starts to fade, we make our way to the north entrance of the mall. Here, we admire our favourite installation of the festival - Singularity. This artwork alludes to the concept of singularity in mathematics and physics, representing a point of extreme variability where ordinary rules no longer hold sway. It symbolizes change, transition, and unpredictability.

Gdy światło dzienne zaczyna słabnąć, kierujemy się do północnego wejścia galerii. Tutaj podziwiamy naszą ulubioną instalację festiwalu – Singularity. Ta instalacja nawiązuje do koncepcji osobliwości w matematyce i fizyce, przedstawiając punkt skrajnej zmienności, w którym zwykłe zasady nie mają już znaczenia. Symbolizuje zatem zmiany i nieprzewidywalność.

Its bursts of changing lights are visible even from the Coaling Jetty, a historically significant Grade II*-listed jetty situated on the River Thames opposite Battersea Power Station.

Błyski jej zmieniających się świateł są widoczne nawet z Coaling Jetty, ważnego z historycznego punktu widzenia molo, wpisanego na listę zabytków II stopnia*, położonego nad Tamizą, naprzeciwko elektrowni Battersea.

A bit further on in Circus West Village, we come across the enchanting Butterfly Effect. This mesmerizing light installation features six immense butterflies delicately perched on the water's surface.

Nieco dalej, w Circus West Village, natrafiamy na czarujący Butterfy Effect. Ta hipnotyzująca instalacja świetlna przedstawia sześć ogromnych motyli delikatnie osadzonych na powierzchni wody.

Here we also meet LED wings ballerinas.

Tutaj oglądamy także popisy baletnic ze skrzyłami podświetlanymi diodami.

We then go back yet again to the Electric Boulevard to watch the led hoop majorettes.

Następnie wracamy po raz kolejny na Electric Boulevard, aby obejrzeć występy z podświetlanymi hola-hoopami.

On the upper ground level of the boulevard, there are the Cloudy Lanterns, an art installation with floating geometric “trees” that constantly change colours.

Na górnym poziomie ulicy znajdują się Cloudy Lanterns, instalacja artystyczna z geometrycznymi „drzewami”, które stale zmieniają kolory.

And suddenly it is rather late, so we run back to catch the train back home.

I nagle jest już dość późno, więc biegniemy z powrotem, żeby złapać pociąg do domu.

Winter Lights part 2

Now, we are heading to the Crossrail Place Roof Garden, where “Vessels” are located.  This is where science, history, and arts meet. Pyramids, where our ancestors celebrated the sun, are filled with laser lights that create various shapes and symbols.

Wchodzimy teraz na Crossrail Place Roof Garden, gdzie znajdują się „Vessels”. Tutaj spotykają się nauka, historia i sztuka. Piramidy, przez które nasi przodkowie czcili słońce, są wypełnione światłami laserowymi, rysującymi różne kształty i symbole.

Nearby flashing Biophila represents more organic, primal aspect of life. It pulses with different dynamics representing ccircadian rhythm and various cycles of life. The plants around are illuminated with colorful lights.

Pobliska migająca „Biophila” reprezentuje bardziej organiczny, pierwotny aspekt życia.Pulsuje ona z różną dynamiką, reprezentując rytm dobowy i różne cykle życia. Rośliny wokoło są podświetlone kolorowymi lampami metahalogenowymi.

The final installation in the roof garden is “In-Between” representing a realm that exists between the reality and illusion. Three simple cubes conceal a system of hidden mirrors beneath their surfaces, revealing a complex structure with an irregular red pulse.

Ostatnią instalacją w ogrodzie na dachu jest „In-Between”, reprezentująca sferę istniejącą pomiędzy rzeczywistością a iluzją. Trzy proste sześciany ukrywają pod swoją powierzchnią system zakamuflowanych luster, kreując geometryczną strukturę z nieregularnie pulsującym czerwonym światłem.

We continue to the Water Street to see the Kinetic Perspective made up of 32 illuminated spinning circles This piece is playing with perspective by creating a vanishing point at the eye-level and creating various geometrical shapes as we move around.

Kierujemy się dalej na Water Street, aby zobaczyć „Kinetic Perspective, instalację składającą się z 32 świecących wirujących kół. Ten element festiwalu to zabawa perspektywą, kiedy przesuwamy się wokół instalacji, zmieniają się układy geometryczne, które widzimy.

Even from here we can see the “Idle Time”, an installation of animated figures, made from simple line drawings, interacting with each other. They are displayed on a construction tarpaulin of a new building as the canvas, and we can see bits of these canvas tearing by the strong winds. It is somewhat surprising the festival is not yet closed due to severe weather conditions.

Już stąd możemy zobaczyć „Idle Time”, instalację animowanych postaci, stworzonych z prostych rysunków liniowych, wchodzących w interakcję ze sobą. Wywieszone są one na plandece budowlanej nowego budynku i widzimy w pewnym momencie widzimy fragmenty tego płótna rozdzierane przez silny wiatr. Trochę jest zaskakujące, że festiwal nie został jeszcze zamknięty ze względu na trudne warunki pogodowe.

The next point of the festival is “Geist” and it brings to mind enormous neutrino detectors. The inspiration for this piece came from particle physicists at the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Physics Department at Oxford University who provided access to real neutrino oscillation measurements from the T2K neutrino experiment in Japan.

Kolejnym punktem festiwalu jest „Geist”, który przywodzi na myśl ogromne detektory neutrin. Inspiracją do powstania tej instalacji byli fizycy cząstek elementarnych z Rady ds. Obiektów Naukowych i Technologicznych oraz Wydziału Fizyki Uniwersytetu Oksfordzkiego, którzy udostępnili pomiary rzeczywistych oscylacji neutrin z eksperymentu neutrinowego T2K w Japonii.

 And this is just an empty interior nearby. Not sure if the lights were done in relation to the light festival.

A to tylko puste wnętrze, które zobaczyliśmy blisko jednej z ekspozycji. Trudno powiedzieć, czy światła były jakoś powiązane z festiwalem.

Jubilee Park looks like a big Wonderland. It is so beautiful with thousands of little lights everywhere. But the wind is so strong now it is difficult to walk, and it visibly pushes people around. As we get on the other side of the park the festival is closed. We have seen everything apart from one installation so despite the weather it was a great visit.

Jubilee Park wygląda jak wielka kraina czarów. Jest po prostu pięknie, wszędzie pełno światełek, niczym liści. Ale wiatr jest teraz tak silny, że trudno jest chodzić i wyraźnie popycha on ludzi w różne strony. Gdy wychodzimy drugą stroną parku, festiwal jest zamknięty. Widzieliśmy wszystko oprócz jednej instalacji, więc pomimo pogody była to bardzo udana wizyta.

Of course, the trains are canceled due to the weather, but this time we predicted it and we have bus tickets. And since we have to wait another hour for it, we have a soup at Pret first, and then drinks and croissants in the pub next to the bus station. That we ate a 10-course dinner earlier tonight? Shhh….

Pociągi oczywiście są odwołane ze względu na pogodę, ale tym razem to przewidzieliśmy i mamy bilety na autobus. A, że trzeba na niego jeszcze godzinkę poczekać to zupka w Pret najpierw, a potem napoje i rogaliki w pubie przy dworcu autobusowym. Że zjedliśmy wcześniej dzisiaj wieczorem 10-daniowy obiad? Ciiii….
