Whales Beneath the Vaulted Ceiling

Last night, we stepped into a truly unforgettable world inside Winchester Cathedral—one filled with deep blue light, haunting music, and… whales.

Yes, whales. Three monumental sperm whale sculptures, suspended from the nave of the ancient cathedral, seemed to float through the air above us. The largest measured over five meters long. Created by artist Tessa Campbell Fraser, these breathtaking sculptures formed the centrepiece of an immersive exhibition that blends art, science, and awe.

We were there for a special event hosted by the University of Southampton—an evening of talks, performances, and reflection titled Whales: A Journey Through Worlds. It explored the incredible ways whales shape not just the ocean, but our entire planet, our laws, and even our imaginations.

Three standout talks anchored the night:

• Professor Jon Copley shared astonishing insights about deep-sea ecosystems that form around whale carcasses, turning death into life for countless ocean creatures.

• Dr Ryan Reisinger spoke about whale migrations and how these giants connect oceans across the globe, influencing ecosystems and even human life.

• Dr Dina Lupin took us into the world of environmental law, revealing how whales are reshaping legal thinking about nature and rights.

And between the lectures, the evening flowed with poetry and live music.

Wczoraj wieczorem przenieśliśmy się do zupełnie innego świata — świata błękitnego światła, nastrojowej muzyki i… wielorybów.

Tak, wielorybów. Trzy monumentalne rzeźby tych ssaków, stworzone przez artystkę Tessę Campbell Fraser, zawisły pod sklepieniem nawy głównej w katedrze w Winchesterze.

Pojawiliśmysię tam na wyjątkowe wydarzenie zorganizowane przez Uniwersytet w Southampton – wieczór pod hasłem Whales: A Journey Through Worlds, pełen wykładów, występów artystycznych i refleksji. Tematem przewodnim były wieloryby i ich niezwykły wpływ na oceany, ekosystemy, kulturę i prawo.

Najważniejsze były trzy wykłady:

• Profesor Jon Copley opowiadał o ekosystemach, które tworzą się na dnie oceanu wokół martwych wielorybów – śmierć jednych daje życie innym.

• Dr Ryan Reisinger mówił o migracjach wielorybów i o tym, jak te olbrzymy łączą ze sobą oceany, wpływając na środowisko i życie ludzi.

• Dr Dina Lupin przedstawiła fascynujące spojrzenie na rolę wielorybów w prawie – i jak zmieniają one sposób, w jaki myślimy o naturze i sprawiedliwości.

Między wykładami zaś rozbrzmiewała poezja i muzyka na żywo.

Sarum Lights 2024

This week, Salisbury Cathedral unveiled a new light and sound experience, elegantly crafted by Luxmuralis for the latest edition of Sarum Lights. This immersive event transformed the Cathedral into a canvas of light, filling both its west front exterior and many places in the interior with mesmerizing projection installations.

W tym tygodniu Katedra w Salisbury zaprezentowała nowy spektakl światła i dźwięku, zaprojektowany przez Luxmuralis na potrzeby najnowszej edycji festiwalu Sarum Lights. Katedra zamieniła się w płótno na którym światłem malowane były obrazy – projekcje obejmowały zachodnią fasadę, jak i wiele miejsc wewnątrz katedry.

Entitled Time, this year’s spectacle delved deep into humanity’s complex relationship with time—a theme that resonates through the ages. From the intricate workings of clocks to the vast expanses of history, science, and art, visitors embarked on an journey of exploration how time has shaped our lives, influenced great thinkers, and inspired artists throughout history.

Tegoroczny spektakl zatytułowany Czas zagłębił się w złożoną relację ludzkości z czasem — temat, który rezonuje przez wieki. Od skomplikowanych mechanizmów zegarów po rozległe obszary historii, nauki i sztuki, projekcje skłaniały do myślenia, jak czas kształtował nasze życie, wpływał na wielkich myślicieli i inspirował artystów na przestrzeni dziejów.

As guests wandered through the Cathedral, they were treated to stunning projections that illustrated the profound narrative of time, with evocative visuals and quotations from H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.

This year extra addition was an interactive installation titled ‘A Note to Myself.’ It encouraged attendees to pen messages to their younger, current or future selves.

Kilka różnych projekcji ilustrowało narrację na temat czasu, z sugestywnymi wizualizacjami i cytatami z Wehikułu Czasu H.G. Wellsa.

W tym roku festiwalowi towarzyszyła dodatkowo interaktywna instalacja zatytułowana „Notatka do siebie”. Zachęcała ona uczestników do napisania wiadomości do młodszych, obecnych lub przyszłych wersji samego siebie.

Christmas at Kew part 3

Continuing our journey, we come upon an old oak tree adorned with tiny twinkling fairy lights that drape across its branches. Just beyond, we enter the Robin Trail, where a sparkling flock of robins in hues of red, gold, bronze, and orange “flutters” through the garden. As the rain begins to fall more heavily, we decide to make a stop at the fire pit to roast some marshmallows.

Kontynuując naszą trasę natrafiamy następnie na stary dąb ozdobiony maleńkimi migoczącymi lampkami, które oplatają wszystkie jego gałęzie. Zaraz za nim wchodzimy na „Robin Trail”, gdzie lśniące stado rudzików w odcieniach czerwieni, złota, brązu i pomarańczy „trzepocze” po ogrodzie. Gdy deszcz zaczyna padać coraz mocniej, postanawiamy zatrzymać się przy ognisku, aby upiec i pożreć słodkie pianki.

Nearby stands The Hive, an impressive installation towering 17 meters high. This striking multi-sensory structure is designed to connect visitors with the wonder of nature, specifically the real bee colony residing at Kew. This Christmas, The Hive is brought to life with over 1,000 LED lights that glow in harmony with a bespoke soundscape, creating a mesmerising interplay of light and sound.

W pobliżu stoi „The Hive”, imponująca instalacja o wysokości 17 metrów. Ta konstrukcja symbolizuje prawdziwą kolonię pszczół zamieszkującą Kew. W te świeta instalacja dodatkowo przyciąga uwagę dzięki ponad 1000 diodom LED, które świecą w harmonii z niestandardowym krajobrazem dźwiękowym, tworząc hipnotyzującą grę światła i dźwięku.

Then we pass vibrant Perspex structures in the form of coloured greenhouses to find the Liquid Lake, where a sunken amphitheatre is transformed by a dazzling array of multicoloured lasers and swirling smoke. The vibrant beams slice through the mist, casting kaleidoscopic patterns on the water’s surface.

Następnie mijamy struktury z pleksiglasu w formie jaskrawych kolorowych szklarni, aby znaleźć się nad „Liquid Lake”, gdzie zatopiony amfiteatr zostaje przeobrażony przez gamę wielokolorowych laserów i wirującego dymu. Jaskrawe promienie przecinają tu mgłę, rzucając kalejdoskopowe wzory na powierzchnię wody.

As we make our way toward the grand finale, we pass through the Cathedral, a dazzling tunnel of light inspired by arched church windows. The twinkling lights create an ethereal atmosphere leading us to the centrepiece of the evening's festivities—the Christmas Symphony. It is a magnificent spectacle of vibrant light displays dancing gracefully across the iconic Palm House of Kew. The fountain erupts in choreographed bursts, perfectly timed to accompany a playlist of beloved Christmas classics.

Zmierzając ku wielkiemu finałowi, przechodzimy przez „Katedrę”, olśniewający tunel światła inspirowany łukowatymi oknami kościelnymi. Migoczące światła tworzą eteryczną atmosferę prowadząc nas w stronę centralnego punktu wieczornych uroczystości — Symfonii Bożonarodzeniowej. To wspaniały spektakl światła na tle Palmiarni Kew. Fontanny i strumienie laserów są zsynchronizowane z playlistą uwielbianych klasyków bożonarodzeniowych.

Sarum Lights

Around Christmas time there are many light installations around, and we decided to start the season with the Sarum Lights at the Salisbury Cathedral. The Illuminating Art performance is prepared by Luxmuralis.

We start outside with a dramatic display of baroque art on the entire west front of the cathedral. The show lasts 10 minutes but it takes us about 2.5 cycles to get it all in. So after about 25 minutes, we are ready to get inside.

W okresie Bożego Narodzenia wokół nas jest wiele instalacji świetlnych, ale postanawiamy rozpocząć sezon od „Sarum Lights” w katedrze w Salisbury. Spektakl „Sztuka Iluminacji” został przygotowany przez Luxmuralis.

Show zaczyna się na zewnątrz od dramatycznego pokazu sztuki barokowej na całym zachodnim froncie katedry. Jeden cykl wyświetlania obrazów trwa 10 minut, ale ogarnięcie wszystkiego, na co patrzymy zajmuje nam około 2,5 cyklu. Zatem po około 25 minutach jesteśmy gotowi, aby wejść do środka.

 In the Cloisters, we literally walk through various 18th-century philosophy and literature texts.

W Krużgankach dosłownie chodzimy w środku różnych XVIII-wiecznych tekstów filozoficznych i literackich.

After entering the south transept, we can see a “gallery” of images depicting the social changes and philosophical thoughts of the late 17th and 18th Century. The Trinity Chapel explores the conflicts of the late 18th century and early 19th century. War, conflicts, and the abolition of slavery are the main topics of the presentation.

Po wejściu do południowego transeptu naszym oczom ukazuje się „galeria” obrazów przedstawiających przemiany społeczne i myśli filozoficzne końca XVII i XVIII wieku. Kaplica Trójcy Świętej przywołuje konflikty końca XVIII i początku XIX wieku. Głównymi tematami prezentacji są wojny, sprzeczności interesów i zniesienie niewolnictwa.

Then we walk through the sounds and images related to the Industrial Revolution. We are surrounded by engines, gears, cogs and chains that symbolise society overtaken by fast-paced industrial changes.

Dalej idziemy wśród dźwięków i obrazów związanych z rewolucją przemysłową. Otaczają nas różne elementy maszyn, przekładnie, koła zębate i łańcuchy, które symbolizują społeczeństwo opanowane przez szybkie zmiany przemysłowe.

And finally, in the main nave, there is the most dazzling display of poems and paintings including famous pieces by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir or Cezanne. This is my favourite part of the show.

I wreszcie, w nawie głównej,  ma miejscy najbardziej imponująca preentacja wierszy i obrazów, w tym słynnych dzieł Van Gogha, Moneta, Renoira czy Cezanne'a. To moja ulubiona część całego programu.

Maison Hermes

One of my favourite buildings in Ginza is the slender, 12-meter-wide Maison Hermes, the Hermes flagship store.

Jednym z moich ulubionych budynków jest smukły, szeroki na 12 metrów Maison Hermes, flagowy sklep marki Hermes.

It is constructed from chunky glass tiles (about 13,000 of them), allowing golden light to filter outside in the evening and making the building glow in the dark. It is the lantern of Ginza, lighting up the night. Blurred silhouettes of shoppers and staff can be seen flowing on the escalators or traversing corridors close to the glass walls, making the building even more interesting.

Jest on zbudowany z grubych szklanych kafli (około 13 000 sztuk zeszło na cały budynek), dzięki czemu wieczorem złote światło przesącza się na zewnątrz i sprawia, że budynek świeci w ciemności. To taka symboliczna latarnia Ginzy. Rozmyte sylwetki kupujących i pracowników wjeżdżających po schodach ruchomych lub przemierzających korytarze w pobliżu szklanych ścian są widoczne na zewnątrz, co sprawia, że budynek jest jeszcze bardziej interesujący.

On the eighth floor, an art space hosts various exhibitions (usually three per year). The gallery is not big but it is very pleasant.

Na ósmym piętrze w przestrzeni artystycznej odbywają się różne wystawy (zwykle trzy rocznie). Galeria nie jest duża, ale bardzo przyjemna.
