Christmas at Kew (2024 edition) part 1

We start 2025 with a visit to Kew Gardens to see their light trail. The trail is approximately 3 km long and, in theory, takes about two hours to complete, though for us it was closer to three and a half ;). It is raining when we arrive, and we brace ourselves for a wet few hours, but the universe is kind: the rain slows to a light drizzle before we get too cold and miserable. It stops and returns a few times, but never becomes heavy again.

We enter via Victoria Gate, and as such the first installation we encounter is Christmas Presents. This consists of a series of two-metre-high arches with hanging ribbons lit by multi-coloured lights. Walking through them immerses us in light and colour, and our spirits immediately lift.

Rok 2025 zaczynamy wizytą w Kew Gardens i ich zimowym szlakiem świetlnym. Trasa ma około 3 km długości i teoretycznie powinna zająć dwie godziny, ale w naszym przypadku było to raczej trzy i pół ;). Kiedy przyjeżdżamy, pada deszcz i mentalnie przygotowujemy się na mokry, niezbyt przyjemny wieczór. Na szczęście los okazuje się łaskawy - deszcz szybko słabnie do lekkiej mżawki, zanim zdążymy naprawdę zmarznąć i przemoknąć. Co prawda kilka razy jeszcze wraca, ale już nigdy nie pada zbyt mocno.

Do ogrodów wchodzimy przez Victoria Gate, dlatego nasza pierwsza instalacja to Christmas Presents. To seria dwumetrowych łuków z wiszącymi wstążkami, podświetlonymi kolorowymi światłami. Przechodzimy przez nie, zanurzając się w barwach i świetle, co od razu poprawia nam nastrój.

From here we reach the Shadow Lanterns, which cast patterned light across an otherwise very dark pathway. At the end of this path, a tree is lit from behind and silhouetted against the sky.

Dalej trafiamy na Shadow Lanterns, które rzucają wzorzyste światło na inaczej nie oświetloną ścieżkę.

Next is the Snowflake Walk, an interactive path where snowflakes projected onto the ground appear and multiply beneath our steps. Ahead of us, beams of light move and swirl as we walk towards and through the Arch of Light.

Kolejną instalacją jest Snowflake Walk - interaktywna alejka, na której na ziemi pojawiają się i rozmnażają świetlne płatki śniegu reagujące na nasze kroki. Przed nami snopy światła wirują w powietrzu, prowadząc nas w stronę i potem pod Arch of Light.

We then arrive at one of the main highlights of the trail: the Palm House Show. Here, the circles and splashes of light are projected through the pond across the surface of Kew’s Palm House, all synchronised with music and fountains. A glowing snow-globe made of light reveals silhouettes of London landmarks, including Big Ben, which feels particularly fitting for the New Year. We stand on the platform to watch the show, which lasts about ten minutes and is excellent - though perhaps just half a mark below the one we saw at Blenheim earlier this season.

Jedną z głównych instalacji tej trasy jest - podobnie, jak w zeszłym roku - Palm House Show. Na fasadzie Palmiarni wyświetlane są światła lasera, zsynchronizowane z muzyką i fontannami. W ogromnej świetlnej kuli pojawiają się londyńskie symbole, w tym Big Ben, jako noworoczny akcent. Spektakl trwa około dziesięciu minut i robi duże wrażenie, choć minimalnie ustępuje temu, który widzieliśmy w tym sezonie w Blenheim.

And now it is time for churros.

A po tym spektaklu jest czas na małe co nieco, czyli churros.

Batman unmasked Part 2

After the interactive part, we entered the Rogue's Gallery, a room splattered with (fake) blood and neon paint graffiti, and adorned with oil paintings hanging between glass cabinets. This gallery celebrated Batman's most formidable foes, including the costumes of the Riddler (Jim Carrey’s green suit with question marks), Joker (Joaquin Phoenix’s maroon red two-piece suit), Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger’s futuristic suit), Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman’s ivy corset dress), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie’s outfit) and the nurse costume from The Dark Knight (done by Heath Ledger). The room was also filled with a fantastic selection of supervillain props and weapons.

Po części interaktywnej weszliśmy do Rogue's Gallery, pokoju zachlapanego (sztuczną) krwią i neonowymi graffiti, ozdobionego obrazami olejnymi rozwieszonymi pomiędzy szklanymi gablotami. Ta galeria upamiętniała najgroźniejszych wrogów Batmana, w tym kostiumy Riddlera (zielony garnitur Jima Carreya ze znakami zapytania), Jokera (czerwony dwuczęściowy garnitur Joaquina Phoenixa), Mr. Freeze'a (futurystyczny garnitur Arnolda Schwarzeneggera), Poison Ivy (sukienka z gorsetem z bluszczu Umy Thurman), Harley Quinn (strój Margot Robbie) i kostium pielęgniarki z The Dark Knight (noszony przez Heatha Ledgera). Ta część wystawy była również wypełniona dużą ilością rekwizytów i broni należącej do złoczyńców.

Our final stop was the Vehicle Bunker, where we were treated to a display of the Batmobile, driven by Robert Pattinson in The Batman (2022). This exhibition was a great way for fans to explore the world of Batman and get up close and personal with the props, costumes, and vehicles from the films.

Naszym ostatnim przystankiem był Vehicle Bunker, gdzie mogliśmy obejrzeć wystawę Batmobilu, którym jeździł Robert Pattinson w filmie The Batman (2022). Ta wystawa była świetną okazją dla fanów świata Batmana aby zobaczyć z bliska rekwizyty, kostiumy i pojazdy z filmów.

Batman unmasked Part1

I am not sure if I am a big fan of the Caped Crusader, but Marcin probably is. Still, it is me who discovered the Covent Garden Batman Unmasked exhibition and insisted we had to go (just before they closed it, btw, but better late than never). This show allows visitors to step into the world of Gotham City, where they are treated to a series of themed rooms filled with original props, costumes, and vehicles from the Batman films (1989-2022).

Trudno powiedzieć, czy ja jestem na pewno fanem faceta w czarnym lateksie z peleryną, ale Marcin prawdopodobnie już tak. Mimo wszystko to ja odkryłam wystawę w Covent Garden zatytułowaną Batman Unmasked i uparlam się kupi bilety (tuż przed zamknięciem wystawy nawiasem mówiąc, lepiej późno niż wcale). Ta wystawa pozwala odwiedzającym wejść do miasta Gotham i przejść przez serie tematycznych pokoi wypełnionych oryginalnymi rekwizytami, kostiumami i pojazdami z filmów o Batmanie (1989-2022).

Located at 45 Wellington Street, the iconic yellow and black signage would be hard to miss.  

Charakterystyczny żółto-czarny szyld pod adresem 45 Wellington Street byłby trudny do nie zauważenia.

Our adventure began in the Wayne Manor library, where we had to endure a brief health and safety talk (in short, do not be touchy-touchy but (photo) shoot to your heart’s delight.). Then the Bat Phone rang, and the guide answered it as though he was chatting with Jim Gordon, and Marcin was asked to sort out the puzzle to open the secret bookcase. Which is exactly what he did (see the video clip).

With a flourish, the bookcase swung open, and we were ushered through a smoky passageway into the heart of the Batcave, where we stumbled upon Bruce Wayne's computer console, before we were drawn to the motorbike used by Batman in the latest movie, starring Robert Pattinson. The Bat-bike, lit in eerie blue light among the rocky walls and various blueprints of the Batcave was beautifully presented up on a stand so that we could walk all the way around, taking in the fine details. Ah, there was also a chance to strike a pose on the illuminated Batman symbol.

Nasza przygoda rozpoczęła się w bibliotece domu Waynów, gdzie musieliśmy poznać regulamin wystawy (podsumowując: żadnych macanek ale można filmować i robić zdjęcia do woli). Następnie zadzwonił Bat-telefon, i nasz przewodnik zaczął rozmawiać z Jimem Gordonem, w efekcie czego Marcin został poproszony o rozwiązanie zagadki, jak otworzyć sekretne przejście przez bibliotekę. I Marcin dokładnie to zrobił (zobacz klip wideo).

Przeszliśmy zatem przez zadymiony korytarz prosto do serca Bat-jaskini, gdzie natknęliśmy się najpierw na konsolę komputerową Bruce'a Wayne'a, zanim naszą uwagę przyciągnął motocykl używany przez Batmana w najnowszym filmie z Robertem Pattinsonem w roli głównej. Bat-motocykl, oświetlony przydymionym niebieskim światłem, był pięknie zaprezentowany na tle kamiennych ścian i blueprintów rozwieszonych dookoła i można było go obejść, podziwiając detale z każdej strony. A, i jeszcze można było zapozować na tle podświetlonego symbolu Batmana.

Next, we entered the Batman Heroes room, where we were treated to a display of Batman's famous masks worn by actors such as Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson. The room also showcased full costumes from Keaton, Bale, and Pattinson's stints as Batman, as well as a cabinet of Batman's utility belts and various gadgets.

Następnie weszliśmy do galerii “ Batman Heroes”, gdzie mogliśmy zobaczyć słynne maski Batmana noszone przez aktorów takich, jak Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck i Robert Pattinson. W tym pomieszczeniu można było również zobaczyć pełne kostiumy Batmana granego przez Keatona, Bale’a i Pattinsona, a także gabloty z pasami narzędziowymi Batmana i różnymi innymi gadżetami.

From there, when allowed by a digital timer, we ventured into the Joker's room. As we entered, the atmosphere shifted from heroic to foreboding. At first, all we could see was just a single hospital-style bed and a small nightstand in an empty, whitish room. Then the sinister riddles from the Joker could be heard, and suddenly the walls were filled with scribbles revealed only by blacklight.

Stamtąd, gdy tylko pozwolił nam na to cyfrowy timer, przeszliśmy do pokoju Jokera. Gdy weszliśmy, atmosfera od razu zmieniła się z heroicznej na złowieszczą. Na początku mogliśmy zobaczyć tylko pojedyncze szpitalne łóżko i małą szafkę nocną w pustym, białym pokoju. Potem usłyszeliśmy złowrogi monolog Jokera i nagle ściany wypełniły się graffiti widocznymi jedynie w świetle ultrafioletowym.

Our next stop was the Arkham Maze, a disorienting space filled with mirrors and flashing fluorescent lights. After navigating through the maze, we (completely unsuccessfully) tried to dodge beams of laser lights, only to finally fumble through some colourful tendrils of ivy covered in fluorescent paints that glowed in the black light.

Następnym przystankiem był Labirynt Arkham, dezorientująca przestrzeń wypełniona lustrami i migającymi fluorescencyjnymi światłami. Po przejściu przez labirynt próbowaliśmy (całkowicie bezskutecznie) pokonać wąski korytarz unikając wiązek światła laserowego, by w końcu przedzierać się przez kolorowe liany bluszczu pomalowane fluorescencyjnymi farbami, które świeciły surrealistycznie w czarnym świetle.

Off to Marrakech (again)

The taxi pulls up in front of our house at 2 am, and I'm just about ready with my packing. I could really use another two hours to wrap up some work tasks, but that will have to wait. Marcin is asleep in the car, as usual, while I chat with the driver. Before I know it, we're arriving at Gatwick. Check-in is quick and efficient, leaving us some time to grab a bite to eat before our flight. I’m not sure why we feel hungry at 5 am, but being at the airport is an excuse good enough. We stop at Itsu and opt for sushi, miso soup, and chocolate bao.

Once aboard the plane, we both drift off to sleep. When we wake up again, we find ourselves in Marrakech. The airport check-out takes longer than expected, with incredibly long queues, but at least the process is smooth. Finally, our driver from the riad is there to greet us. And just like that, the adventure begins…

Taksówka podjeżdża pod nasz dom o 2 w nocy i akurat zdążyłam dokończyć pakowanie. Tak naprawdę przydałyby mi się jeszcze ze dwie godziny, żeby skończyć kilka zadań do pracy, ale cóż, będzie musiało to chwilę poczekać. Marcin w taksówce od razu zasypia, jak zwykle zresztą, podczas gdy ja rozmawiam z kierowcą. Zanim się obejrzę, jesteśmy już na Gatwick. Odprawa przebiega szybko i sprawnie, zostawiając nam trochę czasu na zjedzenie czegoś przed lotem. Nie wiem, dlaczego w ogóle myślimy o jedzeniu o 5 rano, ale bycie na lotnisku jest wystarczająco dobrą wymówką w naszych głowach... Zatrzymujemy się więc w Itsu na sushi, miso i czekoladowe bao. Po wejściu na pokład samolotu oboje zasypiamy. Kiedy się budzimy, okazuje się, że jesteśmy już praktycznie w Marrakeszu. Odprawa na lotnisku trwa dłużej niż się spodziewaliśmy, bo wszędzie są bardzo długie kolejki, ale przynajmniej proces przebiega sprawnie. Po drugiej stronie znajdujemy się z kierowca wysłanym do nas przez riad i tak zaczyna się kolejna marokańska przygoda…

Hillier Garden Light Up Trail

Last Thursday, the Light Up Trail opened at Hillier Gardens in Romsey, and we chose it as our official inauguration of the festive season this year.

The trail begins with a real sense of drama: a beautiful arched, multicoloured tunnel leads into a magical display of oversized illuminated creatures, a giant bauble you can step inside, and the word Christmas spelled out in enormous glowing letters.

W zeszły czwartek rozpoczął się „Light Up Trail” w Hillier Gardens w Romsey i właśnie tam postanowiliśmy rozpocząć nasz sezon świąteczny w tym roku.

Trasa zaczyna się bardzo efektownie - przechodzimy przez piękny, wielobarwny tunel świetlny w kształcie łuku, który wprowadza nas do bajkowej scenerii z ogromnymi, podświetlanymi reniferami, choinkami i gigantyczną bombką, do której można wejść, oraz napisem Christmas ułożonym z wielkich, świecących liter.

Further along, we came across a meadow dotted with giant baubles, each featuring charming children’s designs projected onto their surfaces. This was followed by a section of beautifully lit trees - some adorned with glowing “chandeliers,” others animated with projections of Christmas trees across their silhouettes.

Idąc dalej, trafiamy na polanę z wielkimi bombkami ozdobionymi dziecięcymi rysunkami. Następnie przechodzimy obok pięknie oświetlonych drzew - niektóre z nich udekorowano świetlnymi „żyrandolami”, inne ożywają dzięki projekcjom świątecznie ustrojonych choinek.

One of the highlights of this light path was a long field of illuminated tulips, glowing softly against the darkness, followed by a cluster of giant egg-like structures that slowly changed colours. Around the next corner, we found ourselves surrounded by vibrant neon flowers and butterflies, creating a wonderfully immersive scene.

Jednym z najciekawszych fragmentów trasy było długie pole świecących tulipanów, wyglądające spektakularnie po zmroku. Za nimi trafiliśmy na ogromne instalacje przypominające jajka, powoli zmieniające kolory. Zaś za kolejnym zakrętem otaczyły nas intensywnie świecące neonowe kwiaty i motyle, tworząc bardzo wciągającą, niemal bajkową scenerię.

At the ponds, we stopped to admire the Symphony of Light – a mesmerising light and sound show featuring laser beams reflected in the water, drifting mist, and atmospheric music that brought the whole area to life.

Przy stawach zatrzymujemy się na dłużej, by obejrzeć Symfonię Światła - pokaz światła i dźwięku, z laserami odbijającymi się w tafli wody, unoszącą się mgłą i klimatyczną muzyką.

We then walked along the Magic Footpath, where interactive projections beneath our feet caused flowers to “explode” with every step. We also couldn’t resist the walk-on pianos -light-up installations where jumping on the keys triggered changing colours and playful musical notes.

Throughout the trail, there were plenty of reindeer and festive decorations adding to the seasonal charm. About halfway through, we reached a Christmas market and festive food and drink area, where we stopped to refuel with a German grilled sausage and some freshly made churros - an excellent mid-trail treat.

Kolejnym punktem jest magiczna ścieżka  - odcinek drogi z projekcjami na ziemi, gdzie pod naszymi stopami „wybuchają” kolorowe kwiaty. Nie omijamy też interaktywnych fortepianów: podświetlanych instalacji, po których można skakać, a klawisze reagują dźwiękiem i zmieniającymi się kolorami.

Na całej trasie nie brakuje reniferów i świątecznych dekoracji, które konsekwentnie budują bożonarodzeniowy klimat. Mniej więcej w połowie spaceru był też jarmark świąteczny z jedzeniem i napojami. Zatrzymaliśmy się tam na niemiecką grillowaną kiełbaskę i churrosy  - idealna przerwa na rozgrzanie się i złapanie oddechu.
